NVIDIA Quadro K5100M vs NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 Max-Q vs NVIDIA T600 Laptop GPU
NVIDIA Quadro K5100M
► remove from comparison
The NVIDIA Quadro K5100M is a high-end, DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.3 compatible graphics card for mobile workstations. It is a Kepler-based GPU built on the GK104 chip with all 1536 shader cores activated and is manufactured in 28nm at TSMC. The Quadro K5100M is built for the Intel Shark Bay generation (Haswell) and as a successor to the Quadro K5000M (Chief River platform). As a new feature, PCIe 3.0 is supported for the first time. The K5100M usually comes with 8 GB GDDR5 VRAM clocked at 900 MHz (3600 MHz effective, 115.2 GB/s).
The Quadro series offers certified drivers that are optimized for stability and performance in professional applications like CAD or DCC. OpenGL performance, for example, should be significantly better compared to GeForce graphics cards of similar specifications.
Architecture
The Kepler architecture is the successor to the Fermi architecture that first appeared in laptops with the GeForce 400M series. The GK104 Kepler core offers eight shader blocks, called SMX, that are clocked at the same speed as the central core. In the K5100M, all 8 blocks are active leading to the 1536 CUDA cores. Although more shader cores are available in the Kepler architecture as compared to the Fermi design, the Kepler shaders are still expected to be up to twice as power efficient. However, due to the missing hot clock of the shader domain, two shaders of a Kepler chip offer similar performance to just one shader of a Fermi chip (as the latter is clocked twice as fast).
Performance
The 3D gaming performance of the K5100M is clearly above the old Quadro K5000M, but about 10 percent below the slightly higher clocked GTX 780M. Nevertheless, most demanding games of 2013 will run fluently with maxed out details and very high resolutions.
Features
The improved feature set now includes support for up to 4 active displays. Furthermore, high resolution monitors of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels can now be connected using DisplayPort 1.2 or HDMI 1.4a if available. HD-Audio codecs, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, can be transmitted via bitstream mode through the HDMI port. However, as most laptops will feature Optimus, the integrated GPU will likely have direct control over the display ports and may limit the feature set available by the Nvidia Kepler cards.
Using CUDA or OpenCL 1.2, the cores of the Quadro K5100M can be used for general calculations.
The 5th generation PureVideo HD video processor (VP5) is also integrated in the GK104 core and offers hardware decoding of HD videos. Common codecs such as MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4 ASP, H.264 and VC1/WMV9 are fully supported up to 4K resolutions while VC1 and MPEG-4 are supported up to 1080p. Two streams can be decoded in parallel for features such as Picture-in-Picture. Another novelty is the inclusion of a dedicated video encoding engine similar to Intel QuickSync that can be accessed by the NVENC API.
Power Consumption
The power consumption of the Quadro K5100M is rated at a TGP of 100 W including the board and memory components. Therefore, the card is suited for large notebooks with 17-inch displays or greater.
NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 Max-Q
► remove from comparisonThe Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000 with Max-Q Design is a professional high-end graphics card for powerful laptops and mobile workstations. It is based on the same TU106 chip as the consumer GeForce RTX 2070 (mobile) but with reduced clock speeds, shader count and memory bandwidth. Compared to the normal mobile RTX3000, the Max-Q variants are clocked lower and work in a more efficient state. Currently, we know of three variants with different clock speeds and power consumptions (60, 65 and 70 W).
Model | Shader | TGP (W) | Base (MHz) | Boost (MHz) |
Quadro RTX 4000 Desktop | 2304 | 160 | 1005 | 1545 |
Quadro RTX 3000 Mobile | 1920 | 80 | 945 | 1380 |
Quadro RTX 3000 Max-Q | 1920 | 70 | 870 | 1380 |
Quadro RTX 4000 Max-Q | 2304 | 65 | 765 | 1305 |
Quadro RTX 4000 Max-Q | 2304 | 60 | 600 | 1215 |
GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile | 2304 | 80 | 885 | 1185 |
GeForce RTX 2070 Mobile | 2304 | 90 | 1080 | 1305 |
The Quadro GPUs offer certified drivers, which are optimized for stability and performance in professional applications (CAD, DCC, medical, prospection, and visualizing applications). The performance in these areas is therefore much better compared to corresponding consumer GPUs.
Features
NVIDIA manufacturers the TU106 chip on a 12 nm FinFET process and includes features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Real-Time Ray Tracing (RTRT), which should combine to create more realistic lighting effects than older GPUs based on the company's Pascal architecture (if the games support it). The Quadro RTX 3000 is also DisplayPort 1.4 ready, while there is also support for HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) and H.265 video en/decoding (PlayReady 3.0).
Performance
In professional applications, the Quadro RTX 3000 Max-Q can be faster GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q due to the optimized drivers and bigger VRAM. When gaming with the RTX 3000, the slower clock speeds and less frequently updated drivers should hinder the performance compared to the GeForce variant.
The still relatively high power consumption of the RTX3000 Max-Q makes the card most suited for big laptops. However, we should see thinner designs with the Max-Q variants than the regular RTX 3000.
NVIDIA T600 Laptop GPU
► remove from comparison
The Nvidia T600 Laptop GPU (or Quadro T600 for laptops) is a professional mobile graphics card that is based on the Turing architecture (TU117 chip). It is similar to the consumer GTX 1650 with 896 CUDA cores and a 128 Bit memory bus for GDDR6 graphics memory (10 Gbits). The chip is manufactured in 12nm FinFET at TSMC. The T600 was introduced as a refresh together with the T1200 and should be slightly slower than the older Quadro T1000 (2.6 versus 2.5 TFLOPS peak SP performance).
The Turing generation did not only introduce raytracing for the RTX cards, but also optimized the architecture of the cores and caches. According to Nvidia the CUDA cores offer now a concurrent execution of floating point and integer operations for increased performance in compute-heavy workloads of modern games.
Furthermore, the caches were reworked (new unified memory architecture with twice the cache compared to Pascal). This leads to up to 50% more instructions per clock and a 40% more power efficient usage compared to Pascal. In contrary to the faster Quadro RTX cards, the T600 do not feature raytracing and Tensor cores.
Currently Nvidia only specifies the TDP of 25 Watt (the older T1000 had a TGP of 40-50 Watt). Therefore, the T600 should be well suited for thin and light laptops.
