The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super Mobile is the fastest mobile graphics card for laptops in early 2020. It is based on the desktop RTX 2080 Super, but most likely with reduced core speeds. According to early information it will be only slightly faster than a RTX 2080 with the same TGP setting (max. 200 Watt).

According to our information there will be various versions of the 2080 Super, six versions ranging from 150 - 200 Watt TGP and different clock speeds and three Max-Q variants from 80 - 90 Watt.

Features

NVIDIA manufacturers the TU104 chip on a 12 nm FinFET process and includes features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and Real-Time Ray Tracing (RTRT), which should combine to create more realistic lighting effects than older GPUs based on the company's Pascal architecture (if the games supports it). The RTX 2080 Super is also DisplayPort 1.4 ready, while there is also support for HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP) and H.265 video en/decoding (PlayReady 3.0).

Performance

The mobile RTX 2080 Super Mobile should perform only slightly better than the old mobile RTX 2080. Therefore, it should be able to run all demanding games in 4k with maximum details. Raytracing features however may reduce framerates a lot.

The power consumption of the card can be set with 150 or 200 Watt TGP according to early information. Therefore, the normal Max-P variant is only suited for thick and heavy gaming laptops. A Max-Q variant for thin and light laptops is also planned (most likely at 80 - 90 Watt as the RTX 2080 Max-Q with similar performance).

NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 (Laptop)

The Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000 for laptops is a professional high-end graphics card for big and powerful laptops and mobile workstations. It is based on the same TU104 chip as the consumer GeForce RTX 2080 (mobile) but offers more shaders (128 more). Compared to the desktop RTX 5000, the mobile variant offers lower clock speeds. There are different versions available with 110 Watt (1035 - 1545 MHz) and 150 Watt (1350 - 1770 MHz) in addition to the even lower clocked Max-Q variant.

The Quadro GPUs offer certified drivers, which are optimized for stability and performance in professional applications (CAD, DCC, medical, prospection, and visualizing applications). The performance in these areas is therefore much better compared to corresponding consumer GPUs.

Performance

Depending on the application or game, the Quadro RTX 5000 is even faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 and therefore the fastest mobile graphics card. Especially for some professional apps and workflows that make use of the large VRAM, the Quadro can best the RTX2080 clearly.

The high power consumption of the RTX5000 makes the card most suited for big and heavy laptops. The slower Max-Q variant is intended for thinner laptops.

NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 Max-Q

The Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000 with Max-Q Design is a professional high-end graphics card for powerful laptops and mobile workstations. It is based on the same TU106 chip as the consumer GeForce RTX 2070 (mobile) but with reduced clock speeds, shader count and memory bandwidth. Compared to the normal mobile RTX3000, the Max-Q variants are clocked lower and work in a more efficient state. Currently, we know of three variants with different clock speeds and power consumptions (60, 65 and 70 W).

Performance

In professional applications, the Quadro RTX 3000 Max-Q can be faster GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q due to the optimized drivers and bigger VRAM. When gaming with the RTX 3000, the slower clock speeds and less frequently updated drivers should hinder the performance compared to the GeForce variant.

The still relatively high power consumption of the RTX3000 Max-Q makes the card most suited for big  laptops. However, we should see thinner designs with the Max-Q variants than the regular RTX 3000.
