MSI Alpha 15 Hands-On Gaming Laptop Review

MSI Alpha 15 Hands-On Gaming Laptop Review: Ryzen and Navi instead of Intel and NVIDIA

A game-changer? AMD made its comeback into the CPU business with its Ryzen series not only on desktops but also on laptops. The company made a similar foray into the GPU market with its Navi desktop cards earlier this year, a move that it is trying to replicate on laptops with its Navi 14 GPUs. NVIDIA has dominated the upper midrange of laptop GPUs for a while, but AMD is looking to change that, offering consumers more choice in the process. Read on to find out what we think of one the first upcoming all-AMD laptops.

Our first hexa-core Core i7-10710U benchmarks are in and they handily outperform both the AMD Ryzen 7 3750H and Core i7-8565U - in most cases

Does a hexa-core U-series processor under a 15 W power envelope make sense? As anticipated, Turbo Boost performance is excellent during the first few minutes before clock rates inevitably fall over time. The dip in performance comes out to be about 15 to 25 percent on the Dell XPS 13 7390 Core i7-10710U unit.

Much better than the entry-level version. Quite recently we reviewed a very well-priced version of the Dell G5 15 5590 that had a Core i5-9300H and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650. The Ultimate Ryzen 5 3580U vs. Ryzen 3500U and 3700U CineBench Comparison: Almost All Alike

Microsoft's semi-custom approach to Ryzen isn't really any better than the best Ryzen 5 3500U or Ryzen 7 3700U laptop you can buy in terms of performance. It's certainly good and comparable to the Core i7-1065G7 in some respects, but benchmarks for the Ryzen 5 3580U show it to be nothing special.

Skip the Razer Blade Stealth Ice Lake base model and just go for the older GeForce MX150 model instead

Skip the Razer Blade Stealth Ice Lake base model and just go for the older GeForce MX150 model instead

The best part about Ice Lake is that some older Whiskey Lake models have become great deals. Not only is the MX150 model cheaper and graphically superior, it's also thinner. Ice Lake CPU performance is only marginally faster than the i7-8565U in the last generation model while being 30 to 35 percent slower or more than the GeForce MX150. The Core i7-1065G7 CPU advantage doesn't outweigh the GPU disadvantage by a long shot.
