Valve's Half-Life series is free on Steam for the next two months
To help drum up the hype ahead of the launch of Half-Life: Alyx in March, Valve is offering gamers an unbeatabale deal. For the next two months, anyone with a Steam account can download and play each of all previous Half-Life titles for free to help refamiliarize gamers with the franchise or attract new fans.
Half-Life fans eager to get their hands-on Half-Life: Alyx coming out as a VR exclusive in March have a great opportunity to refamiliarize themselves with the franchise ahead of its launch. Valve is using its Steam platform to offer all the previous Half-Life titles free for the next two months to Steam account holders. For people unfamiliar with the original titles, it is also a great opportunity to see what all the fuss about Half-Life has been since the Half-Life 2: Episode 2 was released in 2007.
“Half-Life: Alyx is set before the events of Half-Life 2 and the episodes, but the games share characters and story elements,” Valve said in a post. “The Half-Life: Alyx team believes that the best way to enjoy the new game is to play through the old ones, especially Half-Life 2 and the episodes, so we want to make that as easy as possible.”
Titles available for download include Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode 2 along with Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life Blue Shift and Team Fortress Classic. Half-Life: Alyx will launch in March for US$80, although customers who buy Valve’s Index VR headset will get the game for free.

I have been writing about consumer technology over the past ten years, previously with the former MacNN and Electronista, and now Notebookcheck since 2017. My first computer was an Apple ][c and this sparked a passion for Apple, but also technology in general. In the past decade, I’ve become increasingly platform agnostic and love to get my hands on and explore as much technology as I can get my hand on. Whether it is Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Nintendo, Xbox, or PlayStation, each has plenty to offer and has given me great joy exploring them all. I was drawn to writing about tech because I love learning about the latest devices and also sharing whatever insights my experience can bring to the site and its readership.
