The table above contains an overview over the best notebooks reviewed by Notebookcheck over the course of the past 12 months as well as still relevant and available older products. 1st – Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2
When the case reads ThinkPad, you can (almost) always rest assured it will contain a good display, a great case, and most importantly great input devices, and the ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen.2 is no exception to this rule. It also comes with three years of warranty by default in select markets, which is another bonus.
Thanks to its carbon case it weighs a mere 1.2 kg (2.65 lbs), which is even less than the MacBook Air.
Given that Lenovo’s ThinkPad X13 Yoga G2 lacks any deal-breaking and vital drawbacks and is even lighter and more versatile than Apple’s MacBook Air we can highly recommend it as alternative thereto.
However, the notebook doesn’t come cheap. Prices start at around $1,300 for the i5/8GB/256GB base model. The device is available through Lenovo’s own webstore.

2nd – HP EliteBook x360 1030 G7
The EliteBook x360 1030 G7 may be comparatively expensive, but with its thin display bezels, its great audio quality, an optional very bright display, and an excellent keyboard it is also of extremely high quality. Despite the fact that this is a full convertible it is relatively lightweight and thin.
Downsides include its short warranty of just 12 months, its lack of card reader, and the fact that there are no even higher quality 4K or OLED panel options. We came to expect these in this price range.
Nevertheless, if you have and are willing to spend the money and are looking for a high-quality tablet you cannot really go wrong with the x360 1030 G7.

3rd – Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano
The MacBook Air is too heavy for your liking? They how about the ThinkPad X1 Nano? At just 946 g (2.09 lbs) it offers plenty of power, good battery life, decent speakers, a matte display with accurate colors, and both Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4.
The keyboard, while excellent in and by itself, was not on a par with other ThinkPads, and maintenance options are few and far between.
Nevertheless, this small and incredibly lightweight notebook is a great device and even more portable than the MacBook Air while managing to offer decent connectivity, nevertheless.

4th – HP Spectre x360 14
The Spectre x360 14 may not be a cheap alternative to Apple’s MacBook Air but it is a very good one. We particularly liked its 3:2 OLED touchscreen. Other benefits include Thunderbolt 4, USB 4, and decent battery life.
A great convertible with stylus support and OLED display.
Both keyboard and SSD performed very well and, in the latter case, fast. The only real downside is the display’s inert PWM flickering. The device supports stylus input, and HP even includes the TiltPen by default, in addition to a USB-C dock and a carrying case.
The device is available in various configurations and can be purchased directly from HP as well as through the usual retail channels, such as for example Amazon.

5th – Dell Latitude 12 7210 2-in-1
While the Latitude 12 7210 2-in-1 might be have been made with businesses in mind consumers might benefit from its Thunderbolt ports and its DisplayPort via USB capabilities as well.
The device offers plenty of power considering its compact size. It remains cool, quiet, and offers a huge application flexibility. The touchscreen supports stylus input, and battery life is very long making for a very relaxed mobile experience without experiencing any form of runtime anxiety.
WWAN and a fingerprint reader are optional extras. The display was okay, however its low maximum brightness and reflective coating rendered working outdoors unnecessarily problematic.
Nevertheless, it remains a compact and highly versatile device with huge benefits overall.
The device is sold through Dell as well as various retail channels, such as for example Walmart.

6th – Lenovo ThinkPad X13
The small Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 with AMD Ryzen 4000 is a very fast premium notebook with strengths and weaknesses very similar to those of the ThinkPad T14s, compared to which it has a smaller display, keyboard, and case as well as a shorter battery life.
In addition, the ThinkPad X13 cannot quite keep up in terms of performance. In return, its keyboard is easily swappable whereas the T14s’s is part of the case.
Compared to the MacBook Air the ThinkPad offers a better connectivity, more safety features, a quiet and cool mode of operation, excellent input devices, and a good display.

7th – HP EliteBook 830 G7
HP improved upon its latest EliteBook 830 significantly. Among others it features a better and well-designed chassis, a comfortable keyboard, a variety of easily upgradeable components, and decent sound quality. Some details make everyday work so much more convenient, such as for example charging via USB-C of the webcam shutter.
In return, CPU performance is in need of improvement, and the list of options is fairly short. No 4K display, no eSIM, no SD card reader, and no Intel Iris graphics option either. Flexibility and configurability could have been better.
Price comparison
8th – Asus ZenBook 13
Are you in the market for a subnotebook with an OLED display? Then look no further, because the Asus ZenBook 13 has you covered. Its excellent display is incredibly color accurate, its AMD processor is powerful, and it features Wi-Fi 6 and a backlit keyboard to boot.
Its low weight, its robust yet compact case (a mere 14 mm / 0.55 inches thick), and its low weight of just 1.2 kg (2.65 lbs) make this a notebook that is easy to carry around all day every day.
However, your 3D performance expectations have to kept in check, and RAM is not expandable. Good thing our review unit already came with 16 GB. We also did not like its weak hinge mechanism as well as its overall power consumption despite of which it managed a good result of over 9 hours in our Wi-Fi battery test.
If you are looking for a powerful notebook with great display the ZenBook 13 with OLED display can be a great alternative to Apple’s MacBook Air.
Price comparison
9th – Lenovo ThinkPad X12
If you dislike convertibles for their overall pretty bulky and thick case, you might want to consider a detachable instead as it allows the use of the tablet part of the device detached from its keyboard dock (hence the name). The Lenovo ThinkPad X12 is Lenovo’s most recent contender in this class, and it feels a bit like a Microsoft Surface clone with ThinkPad genes.
Its main benefits are a compact high-quality case, a great keyboard cover including TrackPoint, and features such as WWAN or enhanced security. Temperatures remained inconspicuous, and Lenovo offers up to three years of default warranty in select markets.
With that said you need to keep in mind that device is not silent by any means, and that its speakers and webcam are mediocre at best.

10th – Microsoft Surface Pro 7 Plus
Ever since the Microsoft Surface Pro 5 back in 2017 the Surface Pro lineup remained largely unchanged. The Surface Pro 7 Plus may be a refresh but one that did not even receive its own model number. Accordingly, we don’t expect too many or even significant changes and updates.
There are no noteworthy visual updates. On the inside, the device was upgraded to Intel’s Tiger Lake platform making for a nice performance bump. A maintenance opening enables easy SSD replacement, and an LTE modem is now available as well. Thunderbolt is not available, and the card reader is no longer available as well.
By default, the device come with just 1 year of limited warranty.
