Some smartphone innovations are great ideas and make a lasting impact on the market. Others are also great ideas but either fail to launch completely or somehow go the way of the dodo, never to be seen again. Let's look at some recent would-be home runs that just didn't pan out for some reason.

Vivo is said to launch the high-end X80 series of Android smartphones soon. A new leak has sparked rumors that the line will launch outside China; even more interestingly, its alleged model number has now also appeared on Geekbench with the top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, while the X80s have been linked to the Dimensity 9000 thus far.

OnePlus has now confirmed that the upcoming OnePlus 10R phone will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max SoC. The Dimensity 8100-Max is a custom Dimensity 8100 exclusively for the OnePlus 10R. However, OnePlus has not yet made it clear how the 8100-Max differs from the non-Max version.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro is another high-end smartphone that is not only cheaper than many of its competitors but one that also comes with the promise of a long update cycle. And while it does have some minor shortcomings most of them are irrelevant for everyday use.

Volkswagen has announced that there is a new, fully-online way to lease its vehicles. This new kind of sales channel has been rolled out to the firm's native market of Germany to start off with, and will work for its ID.4 and ID.5 electric vehicles to start off with. Therefore, consumers in this country will be able to order a new VW right from their PC, phone or tablet soon.

Motorola is preparing to release another two Moto G smartphones, following the launch of the Moto G52 earlier this week. Both 5G smartphones, the Moto G62 and Moto G82 are rumoured to feature similar specifications, including a Snapdragon 695 chipset.

Vivo has just announced the X Note flagship Android smartphone for 2022. Now, the brand has also literally promised the moon with a new special edition of the device. It apparently comes with a fragment of a meteorite heretofore located on the Earth's main satellite. Vivo will hold a flash sale every day for the next week in order to sell these limited units in China.

The POCO F4 GT is just over a week away from launching globally, albeit as a re-branded Redmi K50 Gaming Edition. In the meantime, Xiaomi's next POCO-branded flagship has turned up on Geekbench, confirming that it will also launch with Android 12 and at least 12 GB of RAM.

The potential Xperia 1 IV produced an impressive single-core score in its test. It is also believed the Mark 4 variant of the Xperia 1 may come with eSIM compatibility in some markets.

A smartphone with top performance for less than 520 Euros (~$566)? The Apple iPhone SE 2022 makes this possible. However, you also have to accept some compromises for this.

MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 1300, a 6 nm SoC expected to debut in the OnePlus Nord 2T. The mid-range chipset relies on ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores and supports up to 200 MP cameras, among other features.

OnePlus is set to join the big leagues with the launch of its first foldable phone this year. Supposedly, this foldable will be based on the OPPO Find N, a China-exclusive device that launched to a very positive reception months ago.
