ZTE will soon introduce the Nubia Z50 Ultra, an unusual flagship smartphone that will share a boxy design with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Once again, ZTE will use an Ultra-branded smartphone to showcase its latest under-panel camera technology. The Nubia Z50 Ultra will also offer an unusually long focal length for a primary smartphone camera.

ZTE has shared several Nubia Z50 Ultra teaser videos on Chinese social media ahead of the device's introduction. While the company has not revealed all details yet, it has hinted at the Nubia Z50 Ultra building on the boxy design of the Z40 Pro, Axon 40 Ultra and, by extension, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, the Nubia Z50 Ultra appears to contain a flat display, unlike its predecessor or the Axon 40 Ultra.

ZTE will also return to offering under-panel cameras, as it did last year with the Axon 40 Ultra. Unsurprisingly, ZTE promotes the Nubia Z50 Ultra as featuring a superior solution than the Axon 40 Ultra. In practical terms, the 16 MP under-panel camera should be less visible than it was on the Axon 40 Ultra or the likes of the Galaxy Z Fold4. The cameras of the Nubia Z50 Ultra may excite in other areas too, with 35 mm and 85 mm equivalent rear-facing focal lengths.

So far, ZTE has confirmed that the Nubia Z50 Ultra will utilise the Sony IMX786 as its primary camera, which outputs at 64 MP in a 1/1.3-inch optical format, a 35 mm equivalent focal length and an f/1.6 aperture with OIS. In short, the primary camera will deliver a much narrower field of view than conventional smartphone cameras. For example, the iPhone 14 Pro has a 24 mm lens, although 35 mm is more popular with photographers. Additionally, the device will feature an 85 mm focal lens for its 64 MP telephoto camera, which will be joined by a 50 MP and 14 mm ultra-wide-angle camera.

ZTE has shared multiple sample photos too, which we have embedded below. Overall, the photos look impressive, with a convincing bokeh simulation in portrait mode and a good level of detail across all shots. It remains to be seen whether these have been enhanced or tweaked in post, as manufacturers are wont to do when teasing a new smartphone. The Nubia Z50 Ultra will debut in China on March 7; pricing and international availability has not emerged yet.
