A good idea? Although the IdeaPad name is commonly associated with inexpensive entry-level to mid-range offerings, the IdeaPad S740 is easily the most luxurious and powerful in its family. The big catch is that it'll cost you almost as much as the more well-known Dell XPS 15 or HP Spectre x360 15.

A dominant fan. With the Pavilion 14-ce3040ng, HP is selling a 1,000-Euro (~$1,109) multimedia laptop based on Intel's brand-new Ice Lake architecture. As it turned out in our test, the 14-incher has several unnecessary quirks.

Good package with some limitations. While budget gaming notebooks often have difficulties displaying current games at maximum details, the price-to-performance ratio is good in most cases. MSI's GF63 Thin 9SC is a fairly affordable representative of this species.

Half-baked. Dell's 14-inch laptop shines with decent or even good battery life, an NVMe SSD and a powerful Ice Lake Core i7 processor. The dedicated GeForce MX230 graphics chip is only able to access its performance potential for a short amount of time due to thermal constraints. Thus, it is not really suitable for gaming.

Exceptional gaming machine. The hardware of the Zephyrus S GX701GXR runs all current games smoothly on the matte 300 Hz IPS display. The laptop offers expansion/upgrade possibilities only to a very limited extent.

LFG raid. The GE65 is 19 percent smaller and 12 percent lighter than the outgoing GE63 while retaining all the same ports and most physical features. It's one of the lighter 15.6-inch gaming laptops you can buy from MSI outside of the GS65.

Spectre and XPS contender. After making several Yoga C900 subnotebooks for years, Lenovo is ready to expand the lineup to include larger 15.6-inch sizes. The Yoga C940-15 sacrifices little in terms of performance and chassis quality especially for a convertible.

A Comet Lake laptop with Whiskey Lake performance. The new HP Envy 17 is big, slim and features a powerful combination of dedicated graphics and a Comet Lake-U processor. While its footprint may make it slightly too large for use on the move, it should fit the bill as a multimedia desktop replacement. It is not all good news though, as our review will reveal.
