Origin PC EON15-X gaming laptops get refreshed with Ryzen 3000 desktop CPUs
Schenker demonstrated that AMD’s Ryzen 3000 desktop CPUs can easily be integrated into high-end gaming laptops, but the company is based in Germany, so if you are looking to avoid increased shipping taxes to N.A., you can now get similar solutions from U.S.-based custom computer system maker Origin PC. Unlike Schenker, though, Origin PC only offers up to a Ryzen 9 3900 CPU and up to an RTX 2070 Max-P GPU. However, the silver lining is that these limitations allow for more compact laptops.
The desktop-grade AMD CPU options are now available on Origin PC’s EON15-X gaming laptops and NS-15 workstation laptops. Users can choose among the Ryzen 5 3600, the Ryzen 7 3700X and the Ryzen 9 3900 SKUs. Origin PC claims that the refreshed systems weigh only 5.9 lbs and are 1.28-inch thin, making them 20% more compact than previous versions. Still, upon a closer inspection of the new chassis from Origin PC (most likely a Clevo barebone), we can definitely tell it is quite a bit thinner than the Clevo barebones on the Schenker systems, which have the same weight and same thickness, so we are not sure why Origin PC is citing those figures.
Other features on the new Origin PC laptops include:
- 15.6-inch 144 Hz 1080p IPS displays
- Up to 6 TB of storage in NVMe SSD / SATA SSD combos
- Up to 32 GB of DDR4-2666 RAM
- Wi-Fi 6 + Bluetooth 5.0 + GbE jack
- Ports: 1x USB-A 2.0, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, DP 1.4 over USB-C 3.2, miniDisplayPort, HDMI 2.0b, 2-in-1 audio jack
- Sound Blaster Cinema 6 Audio Codec
- RGB backlit keyboard
- Custom prints or laser etchings for the lid
As far as pricing goes, the Ryzen 9 3900 model with 32 GB of DDR4-2666 RAM, RTX 2070 Max-P GPU, and 1 TB NVMe + 1 TB SATA 3 SSD storage costs US$2,652, while the starter model equipped with a Ryzen 6 3600, 8 GB of RAM, RTX 2060 Max-P, and 240 NVMe SSD storage costs US$1,624, which is not really great value compared to all the Ryzen 7 4800H options that are now hitting the market.
