50 carriers worldwide have 5G services by now

50 carriers in 27 different locations had set up 5G networks by October 2019, whereas over 300 others in about 109 additional markets may be preparing to do so. This is in accordance with some of the latest research on 5G deployment, which is found in a new whitepaper by OPPO and IHS Markit.

Google announced yesterday that it has acquired Typhoon, an independent game developer. Typhoon's first game, Journey to the Savage Planet, is due out January 28, 2020. While Google has not given much detail surrounding the acquisition, it's likely the search giant bought the studio to develop games for its ailing Stadia game streaming service.

Mysterious listing on Geekbench could be the Snapdragon 765

A new listing in Geekbench 5's database shows benchmark results for what may be the Snapdragon 765. The SoC in the listing looks similar to the CPU of the upcoming Oppo Reno 3 Pro, which will use the 765. If these listings are legitimately the Snapdragon 765, they place the chip just behind 2018's Snapdragon 845.

Most 2020 smartphone flagships will have increased power requirements due to the lack of integrated 4G/5G modem with the Snapdragon 865

Qualcomm already presented the premium mid-range Snapdragon 765G with integrated X52 5G modem, so the fact that the Snapdragon 865 comes with no integrated 4G/5G modem does not make any sense. Unless Qualcomm wants to increase its profit and force OEMs to buy the SoC + 5G modem combo. Financial issues aside, most 2020 flagships could be plagued with overheating, low battery life and poor 5G connectivity.

Samsung is working on a 5 nm Exynos 1000 SoC

It looks like the Exynos 990 will not really be a match for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865, and Samsung is already hard at work on a next gen SoC. According to Ice Universe, Samsung will use the 5 nm manufacturing process for the upcoming Exynos 1000, which should also include ARM's high-performance Cortex-A78 cores coupled with either the Mali-G78 or an RDNA GPU from AMD.

At the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019 event, Qualcomm offered a deep dive into the technical specifications of its latest flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 865. The Snapdragon 865 features improved Kryo 585 CPU, an Adreno 650 GPU, a Hexagon 698 DSP, and the Spectra 480 ISP. The Snapdragon 865 does not feature any onboard modem and instead, requires OEMs to use the companion Snapdragon X55 modem that is Qualcomm's flagship 5G offering. Xiaomi announces Mi 10 smartphone with Snapdragon 865

Xiaomi's CEO Lin Bin today announced the Xiaomi Mi 10, one of the first phones to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Bin offered few details, but it's likely the Mi 10 will carry flagship specifications and use the same 108 MP camera sensor used in Xiaomi's other phones, particularly the Mi CC9.
