Samsung retargeting Apple iPad Pro line with new 12.4, 11-inch Galaxy Tabs for 2020
You’ve got to hand it to Samsung. If it wasn’t for them, premium Android tablets would be all but dead as a category. While the stellar success that it has enjoyed with its smartphones has proven elusive with its Galaxy Tab line, the company doesn’t appear to have given up on its ambitions to steal a slice of Apple iPad Pro pie. According to Sammobile, the next flagship Galaxy Tabs are going to are carrying model numbers SM-T97x and SM-T87x and will come in larger 12.4-inch and 11-inch sizes.
The current Galaxy Tab S6 comes in a 10.5-inch display only, which is the biggest hint that the additional model number suggests Samsung is likely to go up in size for the new device. At the moment, it doesn’t have anything over 12-inches in size as far as Android tablets go, although it was the first to pioneer a mobile tablet with a 12-inch plus display. While the current Tab S6 is nice, its DeX PC-like multi-window experience would certainly benefit from additional screen real estate.
The only question mark is what display aspect ratio Samsung will choose. It currently uses a 16:10 panel in the Galaxy Tab S6 having also experimented with 4:3 panels as Apple has favored with its 9.7-inch models and 12.9-inch model. The 11-inch iPad Pro has a slightly longer aspect ratio of 4:4:3 which could be the approach Samsung is more likely to go for as it lies in a sweet spot between the 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios. Regardless of the approach it uses, we are looking forward to testing out the new models when they land.
