Unannounced AMD Vega GPUs mentioned in macOS Mojave update

The current mobility GPUs from AMD are not really a match for Nvidia's lineup, but htat could change in a few months. Data mined from the latest macOS Mojave mentions a total of twelve unannounced Vega 20 and Vega 10 GPUs. Some of these could end up in Apple's upcoming MacBook models, so it looks like AMD might attempt a comeback in the mobility sector.

The team over at iFixIt has published a complete teardown of the new MacBook Air Retina. While soldered storage and an integrated keyboard count heavily against the device, new pull tabs under the battery and a separate logic board for the dual Thunderbolt 3 ports make some components easy (well, easier) to repair. Overall, the MacBook Air Retina scored a 3 out of 10 for repairability.

Apple's latest iPad Pro tablets are almost as fast as a six-core MacBook Pro

Latest Geekbench results suggest that the A12X Bionic SoC is closer than ever to Intel's top mobility CPUs. The single-core scores are pretty tight, however, the gap in multi-core mode is more noticeable. Still the A12 only lags behind by around 3,000 points, which means upcoming mobile chips from Apple could finally match Intel's solutions in 1-2 years.

Thunderbolt 3 comes to the Mac Mini, as well as a few other conventional ports. However, the machine is rather expensive, starting at $799 and climbing all the way to $4,199.

Apple has issued a supplemental update to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 that addresses the throttling issues exhibited by the 2018 MacBook Pro. Those who have installed the update report that they are seeing improved performance in the Core i9 model and that the CPU is now at least able to sustain the base clocks.

iFixit has discovered in its recent teardown of the 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar that Apple has removed the Customer Data Migration Tool connector from the logic board. The connector helped in transferring data to a functioning MacBook in the event of a logic board failure but it now looks like customers should use inbuilt backup options such as Time Machine on a frequent basis to safeguard their data.

Throttling in the 2018 Core i9 Apple MacBook Pro traced to improperly set VRM power limits

A Reddit user has managed to find out the reason for the high throttling seen in the 2018 Apple MacBook Pros with the Intel Core i9 CPU and it turns out that it is due to power throttling of the VRM than thermal throttling of the CPU. The user has managed to manually alter the turbo power limit for the VRM and thus, was able to achieve steady turbo boost without throttling.

It may not be able to sustain Turbo Boost for very long, but at least the Core i9 in the Zenbook UX580 can maintain base clock rates when under heavy processing load. With such high core temperatures in the 90 C range, however, it's no wonder that the same i9 CPU in the even thinner MacBook Pro is getting a lot of negative press for its supposed throttling behavior.

In sum, Apple's app stores (iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS) will no longer allow apps that create or generate cryptocurrencies.
