The best laptops spring 2023 - 95 reviewed notebooks in comparison

The laptop year 2023 started brilliantly: New processors from Intel and AMD as well as new high-performance graphics chips from Nvidia were presented and provided decent performance increases in our test devices. Apple also followed up with the new M2 Pro and M2 Max CPUs in the high-end range and launched new MacBooks. As usual, we list all laptops we tested in the past quarter and select the highlights of the Notebookcheck editorial team.

One month later than usual, we select the best notebooks tested by us and choose our favorites. With almost 100 tested laptops since the beginning of this year, we draw on a database thick with countless measurements and benchmarks for this comparison. Among the recently tested highlights this time are the Apple MacBook Pros equipped with the new M2 Max and M2 Pro, which made significant gains especially in GPU performance. Graphics power on desktop level: The return of the 18-inch gaming behemoths

The presentation of Nvidia's new mobile RTX 4000 graphics card generation, code-named Ada Lovelace, was also eagerly awaited. With graphics chips up to the RTX 4090, Nvidia sets new standards in the high-end gaming segment. You can find our extensive GPU analysis here. Nvidia also refreshes the mid-range GPUs and thus also gives upcoming mainstream notebooks a proper performance boost. A fresh breeze also sweeps through the high-end notebook processors. Intel's Core i9-13980HX Raptor-Lake CPU and AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX Dragon Range chip fight for the crown. Find out who wins here in the big Intel vs. AMD test showdown.

Our test winners: Which is currently the best notebook?

We tested the new M2 Pro and Max processors on the MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16, configurations that deliver excellent results as usual. With the new chips, Apple was able to increase the performance of the notebooks considerably, especially on the graphics side. With 93.9%, the MBP 14 in the high-end version with a 19-core GPU achieves an absolute best score.

With the Razer Blade 18 is the first representative of the new big-screen high-end gaming notebooks in the ranking. Equipped with an RTX 4070 GPU, the machine delivers an overall convincing result in the test and is a serious option for well-heeled users who have high performance requirements and value a chic appearance. The smaller brother, the Razer Blade 16 (RTX 4080), shows similar strengths in the test and is also compatible with GPUs up to the RTX 4090.

The Alienware m18 R1 is the first competitor in the battle for the crown in the big-screen gaming segment. A lot of display meets enormous performance, and the price is just as galactic with the corresponding configuration. On the other hand, from a completely different corner comes Lenovo's ThinkPad T14s, which delivers an excellent performance with an AMD CPU in our test. As a compact office all-rounder with a good battery life, the notebook is very versatile.

Dell XPS 15 9530. Dell already used this designation back in 2014, when it had a Haswell CPU. The current model with Raptor-Lake chip and RTX-4070 graphics has the familiar chassis and is still an interesting option as a multimedia all-rounder. High performance meets large display in the ThinkPad T16 G1 AMD which is thus recommended for home office workers. The Asus Zephyrus G14 challenges the laws of physics. Equipped with AMD's Ryzen 9 7940 HS CPU and Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4090, Asus gets the maximum performance out of a compact 14-inch laptop and can consistently convince in the test.

The Razer Blade 15 OLED (2002) is not old news just yet. Even though the installed components are from the last chip generation, the notebook delivers top performance, and you can also save a Euro or two with discount offers. The Asus ExpertBook B6 Flip is, as the name suggests, a convertible, i.e. a mixture of tablet and laptop. With its large 16-inch screen, powerful i9 CPU and Nvidia RTX A2000 GPU, the notebook is primarily recommended for creative users with high performance requirements.

The line-up of those tested with a very good overall result continues with an attractive gamer named Lenovo Legion Pro 7 16IRX8H. The package of Intel i9 CPU and RTX-3080 GPU in a 16-inch case delivers a successful performance in the test. The group of notebooks rated "Very Good 89%" also includes gaming powerhouses like the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16, tested with i9-13900H and RTX 4090 GPU, the MSI Titan GT77, which also lays claim to the gaming crown, and the Medion Erazer Major X20, as a somewhat cheaper high-end gamer. Gaming thought differently is embodied by the Asus ROG Flow Z13, a 13-inch gaming tablet convertible that can be equipped with an RTX 4070 or RTX 4060 configuration that will make some full-fledged gamers look old.

Multimedia users and creators might find a suitable companion in the Samsung Galaxy Book3 Ultra 16 (13700H, RTX 4050, 16"), the MSI Stealth 17 Studio A13VH (13900H, RTX 4080, 17.3") or the Asus ProArt StudioBook 16 (12900H, RTX 3070Ti 16").

In the segment of high-performance mobile laptops, the HP Dragonfly Pro (7736U, 680M, 14"), the Lenovo Yoga 9 14 (1360P, Iris G7, 14"), the HP EliteBook 835 G9 (6850U, 680M, 13.3"), the Lenovo Slim Pro 7 14 (7735HS, RTX 3050, 14.5") and the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14 (7735HS, 680M, 14.5") are attractive options. Beyond that, the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook surprised with an excellent score in our test.

With an overall score of 88% (Very Good), a number of other notebooks were able to present themselves in the best light in our test. Both Microsoft's Surface Pro 9 (1255U, Iris G7, 13") as well as the Lenovo Yoga 6 13 (7730U, Radeon Graphics, 13.3") offer special versatility and high mobility due to their tablet/convertible function. Among the other very well-tested laptops are powerful mobile workstations, such as the Lenovo ThinkPad P16 G1 (12850HX, RTX A2000, 16") and the Lenovo ThinkPad P15v G3 (6850H, RTX A2000, 15.6") as well as a whole range of powerful laptops that are an interesting option for gamers. Our Favorites - Editors Choice Awards Spring 2023

Based on our test results during the review period, we conduct an editorial vote among the senior authors and subsequently award the Editors Choice Award. Special awards are given to those laptops that stand out due to their successful overall package, absolute top performance in special evaluation areas, or a particularly good price-performance ratio and represent an attractive purchase option for our editors in the respective category.

Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 GA402XY

A current AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS CPU combined with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU - that sounds like a typical gaming machine, right? That is also correct in the case of the Asus Zephyrus G14, with the subtle difference that the G14 is not really a "hulkish powerhouse" in the classic sense, but a compact 14-inch notebook with a weight of only 1.7 kilograms (~3.75 pounds) and a thickness of around 20 millimeters (~0.78 inches). Contrary to the obvious assumption that the laptop would have to collapse thermally after all, the Asus Zephyrus G14 performs excellently in our test.

Asus delivers a well-rounded gaming notebook with the G14 that not only stands out for its exceptionally high performance reserves, but also for its high mobility. In our test, the G14 does not quite reach the top scores of comparably equipped large-format laptops, but the small gaming laptop easily handles all current games in native QHD resolution and maximum graphics settings.

The notebook also collects plus points with its extensive connectivity, the great mini-LED display, the good keyboard and the good integrated speakers. The high-end configuration with R9 CPU and 4090 GPU that we tested costs more than 4000 Euros (~$4000). However, the entry-level model with RTX 4060 graphics is available for around 2500 Euros (~$2000).

Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 14ARP G8

The term "Yoga" once stood for convertible notebooks at Lenovo, i.e. laptops with a foldable display that can also be used as a tablet. That has been history for a few years now, and the Yoga brand now mainly includes classic clamshell laptops, like the Yoga Pro 7 14. In detail, this is a mobile multimedia all-rounder with a 14-inch display that is also available with dedicated graphics chips. We have tested the Yoga Pro 7 variant with an AMD Ryzen 7 and integrated Radeon 680M and are quite impressed with the performance.

In the test, Lenovo's Yoga 7 Pro delivers a convincing performance in almost all disciplines: starting with a high-quality casing, extensive connectivity options, a comfortable keyboard, on up to the good display and the device's high performance reserves. With its weight of around 1.5 kilograms (~3.3 pounds) and battery runtimes of over 10 hours in practical use, the notebook is also an excellent mobile companion.

In terms of price, the Lenovo Yoga 7 Pro 14ARP is extremely attractive at around 1,100 Euros (~$1,000) in view of the package offered. Unfortunately, the availability of the model is still quite limited. Lenovo lists the Yoga 7 Pro in its own store and indicates that it will be available soon.
