Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14 AMD laptop review: Masters all core aspects
Lenovo's very affordable IdeaPad 3 series sits below the already inexpensive IdeaPad 5 series. The tested IdeaPad 3 14 AMD Gen 6 strongly resembles the V14 Gen 2, but our model relies on a much stronger quad-core AMD Ryzen 3 5300U APU with an RX Vega 6-iGPU. It offers 8 GB of dual-channel RAM, which can be expanded to 36 GB to 40 GB depending on the model and comes with a 256 GB PCIe Gen 3.0 SSD. Another key differentiator from the V14 is the full HD IPS display with a brightness of over 300 cd/m².
You can get the above configuration for around €500, and this can occasionally even go down to €300 to €400 depending on available offers. Other configurations with a hexa-core Ryzen 5 5500U or an octa-core Ryzen 7 5700U are also available. We have previously tested an Intel variant with entry-level Celeron CPU. There's also a configuration featuring the Intel Core i7-1165G7 and a dedicated Nvidia GeForce MX450 or MX350.
The IdeaPad 3 14's direct competition comes from the Acer Swift 3, Huawei MateBook D 14, and Acer Chromebook 514.

Case & features: Expandable, SD card reader, but without Power Delivery
The plastic casing in the color "Arctic Grey" can be easily twisted at the base unit and the display lid, but it does not lead to any problems in everyday use. The look is supposed to mimic brushed aluminum. The IdeaPad 3 14 cannot be opened with one hand, and the hinges cause a slight bouncing of the screen.
It is very easy to get inside the chassis of this 1.38 kg office laptop. The screwed battery, a RAM module, the PCIe 3.0 SSD (M.2 2242 or 2280), the BIOS battery, and also the Wi-Fi 6 module from Realtek, which reaches average speeds of ~900 MB/s, are all exchangeable.
The IdeaPad 3 offers one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A, one USB 2.0 Type-A, and one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C, without Power Delivery or DisplayPort-out. A HDMI 1.4b port is available for external displays. The SD card reader works quite slowly with just about 33 MB/s transfer speeds with our reference AV Pro 128 GB V60 SD card, and the card sticks out halfway.

Input devices: IdeaPad 3 14 with precise pressure point and medium stroke
Lenovo gives the IdeaPad 3 14 a solid keyboard that resembles the one from the V14 but has a more clearly defined pressure point. The flat, slightly roughened keys offer an average travel of an estimated 1.5 mm, which makes typing simply fun. Key illumination is optional.
The touchpad's plastic surface offers pretty good gliding properties, which is comparable to those in more expensive laptops. However, the right integrated click button in particular has to be pressed down very far, which can become annoying in the long run.
Display: IPS panel with 313 cd/m² brightness
The matte IPS display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels offers a good brightness of 313 cd/m² and a sufficient contrast ratio of almost 1,000:1. The subpixels are not grainy, and the subjective picture quality is very good.
The color space coverage of about 54% sRGB is low and the colors deviate significantly from the target, so even undemanding image editing seems out of the question.
Both of Acer's Swift 3, Chromebook 514 as well as Huawei's MateBook D 14 are not as bright with levels of 230 cd/m², 225 cd/m², and 258 cd/m², respectively. These laptops also use PWM, which is disadvantageous for sensitive eyes, in contrast to the IdeaPad 3 14.

Performance: Fast AMD quad-core in the low-priced IdeaPad 3 14
The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14 is perfectly suited for office use and Internet tasks. This is ensured by a fast AMD Ryzen 3 5300U that features an RX Vega 6 iGPU, together with 8 GB dual-channel DDR4-3200 RAM (4 GB soldered + 4 GB plugged in), which can be upgraded up to 36 GB in one slot in our test sample.
Models with Ryzen 5 5500U and Ryzen 7 5700U are also available with 8 GB soldered RAM plus one slot. Intel models, one of which we've tested previously with a Celeron entry-level CPU have an optional Nvidia GeForce MX450 or MX350.
Test conditions
Lenovo's Vantage software offers three performance modes for IdeaPads to adjust fan noise and power consumption:
- Maximum power (PL2/PL1): 29 W / 25 W
- Intelligent cooling (PL2/PL1): 24 W / 17.5 W
- Battery saving mode (PL2/PL1): 20 W / 15 W
We run power-related benchmarks in the maximum performance profile, while the Wi-Fi battery life is determined in Smart Cooling mode.
Processor
AMD's Ryzen 3 5300U is a fast quad-core processor that is allowed by the manufacturer to draw 25 W permanently, which it also holds in our Cinebench R15 loop along with its maximum turbo of 4x 3.8 GHz. Thus, it is faster than an average Intel Core i7-1165G7 and a Core i3-1215U of the newer Alder Lake generation. The core temperatures settle at 82 °C.
The Ryzen 5 5500U in the Acer Swift 3 is 30% faster in multi-core applications thanks to the two extra cores, while the MateBook D 14 Intel enjoys a slight advantage in single-core benchmarks. The performance modes cause a staggered performance drop of 10% each, which is similar to battery mode.

System performance
The system performance is good and completely sufficient for everyday tasks, even when multitasking. Intel CPUs like the Core i5-1135G7 and even the Core i3-1115G4 have slight advantages in web surfing due to the higher single-core performance and the stronger Turbo, as can be seen in the Octane V2 and Jetstream 2 scores, for example.

Mass storage
The 256 GB PCIe 3.0 SSD is from UMIS and comes in the smaller M.2-2242 format, but M.2-2280 SSDs can also be installed as well as an additional 2.5-inch SSD or hard drive. You have to buy a SATA ribbon cable yourself, though.
The transfer rates are as expected, but the 4K rates in comparison to the same SSD in the IdeaPad 3 15 (Intel) are lower. Towards the end of our DiskSpd read loop, the SSD performance periodically drops due to the temperature.

Graphics card
AMD's iGPU, the Radeon RX Vega 6, does well in the inexpensive office laptop and although it isn't designed for gaming, some newer games can be rendered smoothly at low details and resolutions while older games can run decently at medium details.
An average GeForce MX350 computes almost twice as fast and an MX450 two and a half times as fast. Both dGPUs are optionally available in the IdeaPad 3 14 Intel.

Emissions & energy: IdeaPad 3 with AMD frugal & cool
Noise emissions
The fan usually remains silent during light office and Internet tasks. Under load, the IdeaPad 3 14 is clearly audible at 33 dB(A) and under combined load, such as The Witcher 3, it already gets very loud up to 48 dB(A).
We recommend using one of the performance modes, "Intelligent Cooling" or "Battery Saving Mode", which make the device pleasantly quiet while only sacrificing little CPU performance.

Loudspeaker
The 1.5 W stereo speakers can get quite loud (85 dB(A)) but deliver a very poor sound overall. This is sufficient for video conferencing and the occasional video on social media, but external sound systems or headphones should be used for enjoying music or movies.

Battery life
8:22 hours of run time in the Wi-Fi test with a brightness of 150 cd/m² are average. Besides the small 38 Whr battery, there is also a slightly larger 45 Whr option that should deliver around 10 hours accordingly, similar to the IdeaPad 3 15 with the same AMD APU.
Acer's Swift 3 and Chromebook 514 achieve similar rates despite larger batteries, while Huawei's MateBook D 14 (Intel) lasts a full 4 hours longer.

Verdict: Low-priced IdeaPad 3 14 delivers on core functionality
Lenovo's IdeaPad 3 14 meets all the basic requirements for an inexpensive office laptop. The matte IPS display is bright enough, the performance is high for the class, and the input devices are rock solid.
In addition, the mostly quiet operation including the useful performance modes, cool surface temperatures, easy maintainability as well as expandable working and mass storage all contribute to the IdeaPad 3 14's value proposition.
If you are looking for an inexpensive mobile companion, the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14 AMD meets all important criteria.
The battery life is decent and an SD card reader, even though slow, comes installed. Power Delivery and DisplayPort are not supported by the USB Type-C port. The base unit and display lid of Lenovo's laptop could also be stiffer. Overall, the IdeaPad 3 14 AMD offers a lot for a price less than €500 for the tested configuration, especially since it has repeatedly been available at bargain prices of €300 and €400 in the recent past.
The Acer Swift 3 has a more stable metal case, a faster Ryzen 5 5500U, but it is also a bit more expensive, relies on soldered RAM, and the display remains significantly darker. Huawei's MateBook D 14 is interesting because it offers very long battery runtimes, even better input devices, USB-C Power Delivery, and a stable metal chassis, but also does not allow RAM expansion and has a dark IPS display.
Accordingly, the purchase has to be weighed in based on personal preferences.
Price and availability
The tested Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14 AMD with the IPS display, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and Ryzen 3 5300U is available for €549 (~US$549) at Cyberport. There are currently a few units available at the eBay store aricitec for only €379 (~US$279) with the same configuration. Likewise, the IdealPad 3 14 AMD can also be purchased from Alternate for €479.
Lenovo's own web store has the advantage that you can choose the bigger 45 WHr battery and also a backlit keyboard, so you can get both features for as little as €505. It is even the latest Generation 7, with almost the same specifications.
