Asus VivoBook 15 OLED Review: Quiet Office Notebook With Strong Screen

The all-round office notebook from Asus stands out with two highlights: A powerful Ryzen 7 5700U APU and a true-color OLED screen. We are already familiar with the screen from the identically built sister model VivoBook 15 K513 (Core i7-1165G7, GeForce MX350). Competing devices include the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ALC05, the Acer Aspire 5 A515-45 and the Dell Inspiron 15 3511.

Case & Hardware - VivoBook without Thunderbolt
The matte black case with its smooth surfaces is made of metal (lid back) and plastic (base unit). The device does not have any manufacturing flaws. The base unit and lid twist a little too much under torsion. The interior can be accessed after removing the bottom shell. The battery is not glued, but rather held in place by screws.
The computer has three USB-A ports (2x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 1) and one USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 1). The latter supports neither Power Delivery nor DisplayPort via USB-C. This means that only one video output is available with the HDMI port. The microSD memory card reader (reference card: 128 GB AV PRO V60) is one of the slowest of its kind.
The WLAN transfer rates determined under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices in the immediate vicinity, short distance between notebook and server PC) were good for a MediaTek MT7921.

Input Devices - The M513 does not have a backlit keyboard
The keys of the non-illuminated chiclet keyboard offer a short downstroke and a clear pressure point. Resistance of the keys could be firmer. The keyboard wobbles slightly while typing, which did not prove to be overly annoying. Overall, Asus delivers a keyboard suitable for everyday use.
The smooth surface of the multi-touch clickpad (approx. 10.5 x 7.3 cm) allows the fingers to glide easily and even responds to input in the corners. The pad has a short stroke and a clear pressure point.
Display - Excellent black level thanks to OLED
The glossy OLED screen (15.6 inch, 1,920 x 1,080 pixels) offers excellent contrast (and black level in particular) and short response times. The brightness value (370.6 cd/m²) is good. PWM flickering could not be detected.

Performance - Ryzen packs a punch
With the VivoBook 15 M513UA, Asus has an office notebook in its range that provides sufficient performance for office and internet applications as well as simple computer games.
Test Conditions
The notebook has three manufacturer-specific performance profiles ("Performance Mode", "Balanced Mode", "Quiet Mode"), and the user can alternate between these using the key combination "Fn"+"F". This review was carried out under the default "Balanced" profile. Some benchmarks were also run under the other profiles. The results can be found in the comparison diagrams.

Power Limit 2 | 36 Watts | 36 Watts | 36 Watts |
Processor
The CPU part of the Ryzen 7 5700U APU (Lucienne) consists of an eight-core processor that operates with a base clock of 1.8 GHz. Using Turbo, an increase up to 4.35 GHz is possible. Simultaneous multithreading (two threads per core) is supported.
The multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark briefly runs at 3.4 GHz before dropping to 2.9 - 3 GHz. The single-thread test is run at 1.4 to 4.35 GHz. In battery mode, the CPU operated at 1.85 GHz (multi-thread) or 1.4 - 1.85 GHz (single-thread).
We checked whether the CPU Turbo runs continuously in mains operation by running the multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark in a loop for at least 30 minutes. Turbo kicks in at a medium level. "Performance" profile causes a slight increase in clock speed.

System Performance
The swift and smoothly running system provides more than enough computing power for office and internet applications. Gaming is also possible to a limited extent. This is complemented by solid PCMark results. RAM transfer rates (dual-channel mode) are at a normal level for DDR4-3200 memory.

Storage Devices
The 512 GB SSD (PCIe 3, M.2 2280) from Intel delivers good transfer rates, but is not among the top SSD models. The notebook offers space for a 2.5-inch storage medium. Since neither the necessary SATA slot nor a mounting frame are included, a corresponding drive could not be added.

Graphics
The inbuilt Vega 8 iGPU is one of the more powerful iGPUs and can run many games smoothly at low resolutions or settings. Continuous operation at maximum clock speed (1,900 MHz) is possible - as shown in the Witcher 3 test. However, this only applies when "Performance" profile is activated. The "Balanced" profile leads to a slight drop in the GPU clock to 1,700-1,800 MHz after a few minutes. The benchmark results correspond quite closely to the average performance levels of a Vega 8 iGPU determined thus far.

Emissions & Energy - Asus laptop with average battery runtimes
Noise
The notebook does not produce excessive noise over the entire load range. In everyday use (office, internet), the fan is often inactive and silence reigns. The noise level rises to 41.9 dB(A) under load - a perfectly acceptable value. A positive aspect: It takes a relatively long time for the fan to start up. No bothersome background noise is emitted. The noise generated under load can be reduced via the "Quiet" profile - at the expense of computing power.

Temperature
In everyday use (office, internet), temperatures fall within the green range. During the stress test, the temperature increases in some areas, but only moderately on average.
The CPU and GPU begin the stress test (Prime95 and FurMark run for at least one hour) at 3.1 to 3.2 GHz and 1,100 to 1,200 MHz, respectively. As the test progresses, clock rates drop to 2.8 GHz (CPU) and 800 to 900 MHz (GPU). The stress test represents an extreme scenario. We use this test to check whether the system runs stably under full load.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 39.6 °C / 103 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 48.4 °C / 119 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 26.8 °C / 80 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 29.5 °C / 85.1 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-1.9 °C / -3.4 F).

Pros
Cons
Verdict - The VivoBook 15 still has room for improvement
Office and internet applications as well as simple games do not pose any major challenges for the VivoBook - this is ensured by the built-in combination of Ryzen 7 5700U APU and 16 GB of RAM. Heat and noise emissions are acceptable.
OLED screens are not often found in the sub-1000 Euro notebook segment. Asus is expanding this range with the VivoBook 15.
The inbuilt OLED screen (FHD) offers an excellent black level and completely covers the DCI-P3 color space. It also offers stable viewing angles, good color reproduction, short response times and sufficiently high brightness. However, the glossy screen is a point of criticism.
Despite a purchase price of around 900 Euros, the laptop has weaknesses that should not be present at this level: lack of keyboard lighting, a slow memory card reader, no mounting frame/SATA port for the installation of a 2.5-inch memory device, no fast USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt 4) with Power Delivery and DisplayPort. Battery runtimes can only be described as average with a WLAN runtime of about 6.5 h.
Cheaper without OLED
As an alternative, there is the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15ALC05, which is similar to the VivoBook in terms of specifications and price, but offers significantly better runtime values thanks to a 70-Wh battery. It also comes with a backlit keyboard and Power Delivery. Weaknesses of the IdeaPad are the soldered RAM and the average display.
A cheaper alternative is the Acer Aspire 5 A515-45-R4R1 (around 600 Euros). This also comes with a Ryzen 7 5700U APU and can also outperform the VivoBook in terms of battery life. The low price level is due to the fact that the RAM only runs in single-channel mode and that no Windows operating system is included.
Price and Availability
The Asus VivoBook 15 OLED M513UA appears to be unavailable in the present configuration (Ryzen 7 5700U, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, OLED screen) outside of Europe upon the publishing of this review. A very similar configuration can be bought from Amazon UK (Ryzen 5 5500U, 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD, OLED screen) for £499.99.
