Case and connectivity - Lenovo laptop without a USB-C port
Lenovo has chosen a silver-gray plastic case. The top of the base unit and the lid's back feature a design that simulates a brushed finish. The laptop doesn't exhibit any manufacturing flaws. The base unit and lid can be twisted too easily. Rigidity is lacking here. The battery is firmly built into the device. Furthermore, any maintenance or upgrade procedures require the removal of the bottom cover.
The IP3 has three USB-A ports (1x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 1) on board. A USB-C port is not included. An external monitor can be connected via HDMI. Moreover, the SD memory card reader (reference card: AV PRO SD 128 GB V60) is not very fast.
The built-in WLAN chip (Intel Wireless AC 9560; 802.11a/b/g/n/ac) has already been on the market for a few years, but it's not outdated yet: The transfer rates determined under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices nearby, short distance between laptop and server PC) are good.
The IdeaPad 3 comes preinstalled with Windows 10 Home in S mode. You should perform the free upgrade to the full version of Windows 10 Home. Otherwise, only applications from the Microsoft Store can be used.

Input devices - The IdeaPad lacks a backlit keyboard
The flat, slightly roughened keys of the non-backlit chiclet keyboard have a short travel and a clear pressure point. The keyboard yields slightly during typing. This didn't prove to be bothersome, though. All in all, Lenovo delivers a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use here.
The smooth surface of the multitouch-capable ClickPad (approx. 10.5 cm x 7 cm) allows fingers to glide easily on it. It also responds to inputs in the corners. The pad offers a short travel and a clear pressure point.

Performance - Lenovo laptop powered by Tiger Lake
With the IdeaPad 3 15ITL05, Lenovo delivers a simple 15.6-inch laptop that offers enough computing power for office and Internet applications.
Test conditions
The IdeaPad comes with three manufacturer-specific energy profiles ("Smart Cooling", "High Performance", "Battery Saving Mode"), between which you can switch using the key combination "Fn" + "Q". The test was performed with the default profile "Smart Cooling" active. In the end, it doesn't matter which profile is used. There are no performance differences between the profiles. Caution: This could be different for other configuration versions of the IdeaPad.

Processor
The Core i3-1115G4 dual-core processor (Tiger Lake) operates at a base speed of 3 GHz. An increase up to 4.1 GHz is possible via Turbo. Hyper-Threading (two threads per core) is supported.
The processor briefly executes the multithread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark at 3.4 to 4.1 GHz. The single-thread test is run at 1.5 to 4.1 GHz. The clock rates are lower on battery power.
We verify if the CPU Turbo is also consistently used when plugged in by running the Cinebench R15 benchmark's multithread test in a continuous loop for at least 30 minutes. Only one core can run at high clock speeds continuously; the clock rate of the second core fluctuates significantly.

The system works well and smoothly. We didn't experience any problems. The Core i3 provides enough computing power to handle office and Internet applications. The PCMark results are good. Since the laptop has one RAM slot, it would be possible to increase the memory size. 4 GB of RAM are soldered.

Storage
An NVMe SSD (M.2 2242; 2280 models also fit) with a total capacity of 256 GB serves as the system drive. Its transfer rates are good. A mounting frame for a 2.5-inch storage drive is also found inside the laptop. However, the SATA ribbon cable that is required for the connection of an appropriate storage medium is not included in the package, and it would have to be purchased separately if required.

Graphics card
The Intel UHD Graphics Xe G4 graphics core can run continuously at maximum speed (1,250 MHz) - this is shown in our The Witcher 3 test. The benchmark results are above the previously determined average for this GPU. The hardware is definitely capable of rendering some games smoothly on the screen - at low resolutions and low quality settings. Titles with moderate hardware requirements allow more. However, the IdeaPad is not a gaming laptop.

Emissions and energy - The 15ITL05 barely heats up
Noise emissions
All in all, the IdeaPad doesn't generate that much noise. In everyday use (office, Internet), the fan is usually quiet and silence prevails. Under load, the sound pressure level climbs up to 38 dB (A) - a simple office laptop should offer slightly lower rates here. However, the fan noise is tolerable.

Temperature
The Lenovo laptop only heats up to a small extent. Even under full load (stress test), the case is only warm to the touch. The CPU temperatures are no cause for concern.
At the start of the stress test (Prime95 and FurMark run for at least an hour), the CPU and GPU run at 3.4 GHz and 1,250 MHz, respectively, for a few seconds. After that, the clock rates drop to between 1 and 1.5 GHz, and 1,000 to 1,100 MHz, respectively, and remain at this level.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37.2 °C / 99 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 38 °C / 100 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.2 °C / 77 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 24.8 °C / 76.6 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (+2.8 °C / 5.1 F).

Energy consumption
All in all, the IdeaPad doesn't require that much energy. The maximum power consumption of just under 52 watts is reached at the beginning of the stress test. The rate drops significantly after a few seconds. The laptop performs our The Witcher 3 test with a constant power consumption. With a nominal output of 65 watts, the power adapter has sufficient capacity.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - Solid office laptop
Despite its slim case and low weight (about 1.7 kg), the IdeaPad isn't a very mobile laptop: One battery charge is enough for a Wi-Fi runtime of just under 5:30 hours - not an impressive rate.
Lenovo delivers a simple, affordable office laptop with the IdeaPad 3 15ITL05.
A Core i3-1115G4 CPU, 8 GB of RAM (dual-channel mode; 4 GB module, 4 GB on board), and a 256 GB NVMe SSD (M.2 2242) equip the laptop for office and Internet use. The IdeaPad produces a relatively low amount of noise and barely heats up.
The display (Full HD, IPS) scores points with a matte surface, stable viewing angles, and an acceptable color reproduction. However, the brightness and color-space coverage aren't satisfactory. The poor webcam (0.3 MP) isn't suitable for video conferences. An external camera would have to be used if necessary.
The Fujitsu Lifebook A3510 could be an alternative to the IdeaPad. It offers Power Delivery, a DVD drive, Windows 10 Pro, and a maintenance hatch. But the A3510 doesn't offer any outstanding battery runtimes, either.
Price and availability
At the time of writing, the model of the IdeaPad 3 15ITL05 that seems to be more widely available in the United States shares the same specs with the one that we reviewed (Core i3-1115G4, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD), except for the display, which in this case is a 15.6-inch TN HD (1366x768) touchscreen. You can find it on Best Buy, for example, at a current price of $424.99. Moreover, you can get the model with the Full HD display but with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD storage on Amazon for $399.
