Huawei MateBook D 14 (2022) laptop review: Unibody for beginners

The Huawei MateBook D 14 comes in a slick unibody design and combines premium-class features with budget aspects, which are covered in detail in this review. The price is currently EUR 799, but this may fluctuate due to promotional campaigns.
The budget-oriented MateBook D series, which includes both office and multimedia laptops, does not include the MateBook 14 from 2021, which now only costs around EUR 100 more than the D 14, but uses a 3:2 touchscreen and so appears somewhat more compact.
Thus the key question is whether the MateBook D 14 with its Intel Core i5, 16 GB LPDDR4X RAM, 512 GB SSD and matte Full HD IPS display is worthy of the aforementioned price, or whether last year's model, which is EUR 200 cheaper and only has 8 GB RAM, manages the balancing act of premium and budget better. In any case, the competition is strong in this price range, including the Apple MacBook Air M1, Acer Swift 3 SF314, Lenovo ThinkPad E14, HP Envy 14, Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro and Dell's Inspiron 14 5425.

Case: MateBook D 14 in robust unibody design
The chic unibody case of the Huawei MateBook D 14 comes in Space Grey, i.e. matte blue-grey. The Mystic Silver color is only available as an option for the larger MateBook D 15. The unibody case is very sturdy, has a very high-quality feel and does not reveal any flaws in the workmanship.
The case and the display lid of the office notebook can hardly be twisted or flexed, despite the particularly thin screen edges. Overall, the compact notebook is just fun to pick up and look at. So if you value these aspects and also want to work with Windows, you're in good hands with the MateBook series.
The D 14 is difficult to open with one hand because the hinges are set fairly tightly to prevent lid teetering. We were also surprised by the maximum opening angle of 180 degrees.
At just under 1.36 kg, the Huawei MateBook D 14 has an average weight that is still lower than that of most competing laptops in our comparison field. The MacBook Air M1 is 100 g lighter, while the Acer Swift 3 SF314 is the lightest office notebook at 1.21 kg.
Equipment: Office laptop needs USB-C adapter when charging
The connectivity of the Huawei MateBook reflects its budget character in several respects, consisting of one USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, one USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (with PD, without DisplayPort), HDMI 1.4b (4K @30Hz), an audio jack and a slow USB 2.0 port on the right side. Since there is no separate charging port, USB-C peripherals can only be used with an adapter or dock while charging. Thunderbolt 4 and an SD card reader are not included.
Communication
As in the predecessor, the soldered Wi-Fi module falls well below the capabilities of an Intel AX201, even under the best conditions. Nonetheless, the transfer rates are not slow and are on par with most competitors, including the Apple MacBook Air M1. However, the HP Envy 14 with the same Wi-Fi chip offers almost double the speeds.
Webcam
The 720p webcam in the MateBook D 14 delivers slightly better images than most 720p webcams. The suboptimal angle resulting from the camera's placement between the "F6" and "F7" keys can be improved somewhat by propping up the office laptop at the back. Nothing then stands in the way of video conferences.

Accessories
In addition to the power supply (65 W) and USB-C cable, no other accessories specifically for the MateBook are included in the box or on Huawei's website. The packaging material is not free of plastic and is also not recycled.
Maintenance
After loosening ten Torx T5 screws, it is very easy to get inside the MateBook. However, not much can be done here. Only the M.2-2280 SSD and the screwed 57 Wh battery can be replaced without much effort. The RAM and the Wi-Fi chip are permanently installed (soldered).
Warranty
In Germany, Huawei offers a warranty period of 24 months on the MateBook D 14. This may differ in other countries, so interested buyers should double-check before purchasing.
Input Devices: Huawei MateBook D 14 with backlit keys
Keyboard
DThe keyboard of the Huawei MateBook D 14 comes in full width, offering larger keys than the Lenovo ThinkPads or HP EliteBooks.
In contrast to the MateBook D 15, the keys are not roughened but smooth, which is often the case when the keys are backlit. Key travel is not too short and typing is pleasant because the pressure point is clearly noticeable. While the keystroke is soft, the resistance might be a little too low for some.
Under targeted pressure, the quiet laptop keyboard yields slightly on the left, which is slightly annoying when typing, as is the somewhat clattery space bar. The "Home" and "End" function keys are missing, but there is an integrated, reliable and fast-working fingerprint reader in the power button in Huawei's budget laptop.
Touchpad
In contrast to the larger MateBook D 15, the touchpad's integrated click buttons (12.1 x 6.4 cm) on the D 14 provide very concise and pleasant feedback. Meanwhile, the smooth surface allows for effortless gliding, while all kinds of inputs, including multi-touch gestures and drag-and-drop, are implemented without lag.
Display: Average values for the MateBook D 14
The matte 16:9 IPS display in the 14-inch MateBook offers a sufficiently high resolution of 1920x1080, but a suboptimal brightness of 265 cd/m², at least when it comes to outdoor use.
Contrast values and the black level are okay at 1075:1 and 0.265 cd/m², respectively. Black looks really black in the absence of a clear gray haze. The gray-to-gray and black-to-white response times aren't very fast, so ghosting is noticeable, although not particularly pronounced. Backlight bleeding is also only slightly pronounced on the BOE panel.
Most competing laptops within our test field offer significantly better displays with higher brightness, contrast and color values. The MateBook uses PWM to regulate the brightness with a frequency of 6 kHz at all brightness levels below 90%. Since the frequency is very high, this shouldn't be an issue for sensitive eyes.

At 4.95, the DeltaE values for the colors deviate slightly from the target of <3, at which color deviations become visible to the human eye. Even our calibration was unable to bring about much improvement. At least the display panel does not have a color cast. Our calibrated ICC color profile can be downloaded here.

Performance: Old CPU, yet enough power for an office laptop
Huawei's MateBook D 14 is a mid-range office notebook equipped with an Intel Core i5-1155G7, 16 GB of soldered LPDDR4X-3733 RAM and a 512 GB PCIe 3.0 SSD. This equipment is well suited for office work and web surfing. Other SKUs, such as those with a Core i7 or less RAM, do not exist, nor does an AMD sister model.
Testing Conditions
The MateBook D 14 offers two performance modes that can be switched via "Fn + P". While our benchmarks were carried out in Performance mode, Balanced mode is always active in Battery mode.
The CPU performance limit PL1 (long-term performance) is slightly lower than in the MateBook D 15, as the table below shows. Also interesting is that PL1 is 2 W higher in battery operation than in mains operation (with both in Balanced mode).
Performance mode/ Power limit | PL2 | PL1 |
---|---|---|
Performance | 49 W | 28 W |
Balanced | 49 W | 18 W |
Battery | 39 W | 20 W |
Processor
The clock rate of the installed Intel Core i5-1155G7 quad-core CPU of the Tiger Lake generation (2021) is only around 4.2 GHz for the first few seconds, gradually dropping to 3.4 GHz after 30 seconds and maintaining this permanently. Multi-core performance is around 10 to 15% higher than the previous model's Core i5-1135G7, which is mostly due to the slightly higher performance limits.
In our performance rating, the Huawei MateBook D 14 is in first place overall, just behind the ThinkPad E14 with its AMD Ryzen 5 5500U. Depending on the application, however, the latter is up to 37% faster, while the Apple MacBook Air M1 computes 30% faster than the MateBook in Geekbench 5.4 (multi-core). In Battery mode, the performance loss of less than 10 % is roughly the same as in Balanced mode.

System Performance
The everyday performance of the MateBook D 14 office laptop is very good. There is no lag when playing a 4K YouTube video while simultaneously browsing the web with multiple tabs. The high turbo and single-core frequencies provide for a smooth surfing experience, and the benchmark results for Mozilla Kraken and WebXPRT are correspondingly good.

Storage Devices
The Phison PCIe 3.0 SSD has a capacity of 512 GB, of which 411 GB is available. The M.2 2280 SSD delivers solid transfer rates in all benchmark disciplines. Moreover, there is no throttling.
The Acer Swift 3 with its Samsung PM9A1 is the winner in our comparison field. However, partitioning into a 120 GB and a 337 GB drive is unnecessary and quickly fills up the main partition of the notebook.
