With Ryzen, AMD has come back to the desktop market as a major competitor to Intel. But what is going on with the state of AMD-based notebooks? Generally made with absolute bottom-rung components such as 1366 x 768 TN panels and slow storage and RAM, it's clear that AMD needs to get Raven Ridge (Ryzen) into laptops as soon as possible — as well as encourage OEMs to put in a little more effort.

Limited competitiveness. Despite some good approaches, an SSD and sufficient CPU performance, we cannot quite get accustomed to Acer's multimedia newcomer with an AMD basis. The engine does not work as efficiently and reliably as the Intel competition, and especially the subpar TN-panel display without any flexibility concerning viewing angles will most likely only suffice for undemanding users.

Good Package. The Hewlett Packard Pavilion 15-aw004ng is an interesting notebook. The 15.6 inch allrounder packs a matte FHD screen, a SSD and an AMD dual graphics setup. The price for all these goodies: 550 Euros. A price like that for a packet like this can convince most buyers to look the other way when faced with certain flaws, such as, below-average battery life and a one year warranty.
