With either an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or an AMD RX 550, Acer's new mainstream gaming notebook offers quite a few options.

Acer has become known for offering its notebook customers a high degree of customizability. This is especially true with their Nitro and Predator gaming lines. The Taiwanese company looks to continue this trend with their new Nitro 5 gaming notebooks, announced earlier today.

The Nitro 5 is all about choice. Here’s a quick rundown of the internal components:

  • Up to 32 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz RAM
  • Up to 512 GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • Up to 2 TB mechanical HDD
  • 802.11ac 2x2 MIMO WiFi
  • 1x USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-C
  • 1x USB 3.0 Type-A (w/ always-on charging)
  • 2x USB 2.0
  • HDMI 2.0

The notebook has a 15.6-inch FHD IPS display and a Dolby-branded audio for a rich multimedia and gaming experience. The Nitro 5 also features Acer’s Coolboost™ technology to “deliver heightened fan speeds and cooling ability and [allow] users to manually control the cooling process when heavy use requires an added boost.”

The crux of any gaming notebook lies in the CPU and GPU, and here is where the Nitro 5 stands out from the crowd. While there’s the typical Kaby Lake Core i5 or Core i7 CPU with either NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti that are increasingly becoming the standard CPU/GPU combo in mainstream gaming notebooks, the Nitro 5 is one of the first notebooks to offer a GPU based on AMD’s Polaris architecture. If users opt for a 7th generation Bristol Ridge APU from AMD (either an A-Series FX, A12, or A10 APU), they can equip the Nitro 5 with AMD’s Radeon RX 550. The Nitro 5 will be one of the first notebooks available with the updated 500 series from AMD at launch. Speaking of the notebook’s launch, the Nitro 5 will be available in July starting at $799 in North America. European gamers can expect to see the Nitro 5 in August starting at €1,099.

Be sure to check Notebookcheck.net later this summer as we’ll be sure to look at what the Nitro 5 (and AMD’s mobile Polaris platform) can do.
