The Radeon RX 6600 XT is AMD’s mid-range RDNA 2 graphics card. It is intended primarily for 1080p gamers. The RDNA 2 GPU is quite energy-efficient. We shall touch on performance a bit later in our review.
There is no reference model of the Radeon RX 6600 XT. Unlike with the higher-end 6000-series GPUs, only board-partner models are available. For this review, AMD sent us the XFX Speedster MERC 308 AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT. This is one of the more premium models with a triple-fan cooler. All in all, the cooling system works well, which is not surprising given the TGP of just 160 W. The XFX model of the Radeon RX 6600 XT looks premium, even though the shroud is made of plastic. However, the backplate is made of metal, which is why it makes the 27.4-cm (10.8 ″) graphics card feel very sturdy. The backplate is not involved in cooling any GPU components because it does not have any thermal pads.
The AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT supports all the latest RDNA 2 features. It is worth mentioning, though, that it only has 32 RT cores, which means that it will not be able to keep up with faster RX 6000-series GPUs when it comes to ray-tracing performance. The RX 6600 XT supports SAM (Smart Access memory). This means that the graphics chip can access all 8 GB of VRAM at the same time. The 6600 XT has a 128-bit-wide bus. The Radeon RX 6700 XT, on the other hand, has a 192-bit-wide bus, which is one of the reasons why it is faster. The 6600 XT (2048) also has fewer streaming processors than the 6700 XT (2560). Our review model features the bog-standard selection of ports for this kind of GPU (3 DP ports; 1 HDMI port). The graphics card is supplied with power via an 8-pin connector.

Our Review System Is Based on the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
We use an AMD system powered by the Ryzen 9 5900X for our benchmarks. The motherboard comes from Asus (X570 ROG Crosshair VIII Hero WiFi). Both the cooler (ENKI 360 AIO) and the RAM (32 GB) come from G.Skill. As our monitor we use the Acer Predator XB321HK. Our thanks go out to AMD for providing us with this system.

Synthetic Benchmarks
The Radeon RX 6600 XT appears to be about as capable as the RTX 2080 Super, at least when we are looking at the synthetic benchmark results. At this point in time we cannot compare the RX 6600 XT against the RTX 3060, because we still have not reviewed the RTX 3060. However, we shall take a close look at the direct competitor of the RX 6600 XT in the future.
The XFX Radeon RX 6600 XT Merc 308 AMD RX 6600 XT is 12% faster than the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT. The Radeon RX 6700 XT offers 20% more performance than the RX 6600 XT, though. Nevertheless, the 6600 XT is still a very capable 1080p GPU. The RX 6700 XT is primarily intended for 1440p gamers.

Gaming Benchmarks
AMD says that the Radeon RX 6600 XT is meant for 1080p gaming. The XFX Radeon RX 6600 XT proves that that is the case. All of the titles which we benchmarked were playable at 1080p. Some games can even be run at higher resolutions.
We still use The Witcher 3 to measure the frame rates and frame times. There are no issues here with the frame rate consistency. Throughout our test, the frame rates hovered around 100 FPS. All in all, there should not be any random drops in performance when gaming.

Compute Performance
With RDNA 2 came a significant boost in compute performance. This is why the RX 6600 XT is able to beat the RX 5700 XT in the compute benchmarks. The RX 6700 XT is considerably faster than the 6600 XT though.

Thermals & Noise
According to AMD, the Radeon RX 6600 XT has a TGP of 160 W. When compared to the RX 5700 XT, the RX 6600 XT is significantly more energy-efficient and capable.
For this review, we measured the system power consumption. During our stress test, the average power draw amounted to 281 W. When gaming, the system drew 299 W on average. The system energy consumption peaked at 330 W. Most power supplies will be able to handle this kind of load. We did not use any custom fan profiles for the GPU. In FurMark, the GPU temperatures hovered around 76 °C (168.8 °F). According to HWiNFO, the GPU temperatures peaked at 93 °C (199.4 °F). AMD specifies a maximum operating temperature of 110 °C (230 °F) for the RX 6600 XT. All in all, there is enough thermal headroom.
We were positively surprised by the XFX Speedster MERC 308 RX 6600 XT. It cuts a very fine figure when it comes to the thermals and fan noise. With the case closed, the GPU is basically inaudible. It is drowned out by the case fans.
