Intel Raptor Lake-HX flagship Core i9-13980HX in MSI Raider GE78 HX within striking distance of 170 W Ryzen 9 7950X and 51% faster than leaked Apple M2 Max

Intel's upcoming Raptor Lake-HX is now almost confirmed thanks to a recent leak of an MSI Raider GE78 HX laptop powered by the Core i9-13980HX on Geekbench. The CPU seems to be offering desktop-class performance with single-core and multi-core scores almost on par with a 170 W AMD Ryzen 9 7950X. The Core i9-13980HX also seems to be significantly faster than a leaked 12-core Apple M2 Max running the same benchmark.

AMD is reportedly revealing the next batch of Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 processors at CES 2023. The engineering samples are mentioned in the Einstein@Home database, which also includes OPN codes that suggest base frequencies of 2 GHz and 2.1 GHz. Judging by the number of cores and threads, the upcoming top-of-the-line Threadripper 7000 could have similar specs to AMD's EPYC 9654 server processors.

According to Q3 2022 financial figures released by AMD, the company’s Data Center, Gaming, and Embedded Systems segments performed well. Even though AMD promised USB4 support for the upcoming Zen4-based processors, it looks like this feature could still see very limited availability even on premium AM5 motherboards. Gigabyte's new X670E AORUS MASTER, for instance, does not feature any USB4 ports, but supports a future USB4 add-in card.

Updated | Alleged AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Cinebench R23 benchmark score confirms Zen 4's single-core hegemony

An early AMD Ryzen 9 7950X sample has been tested on Cinebench R23. It scored 2,205 and 29,649 in the single and multi-core tests, respectively. The CPU's single and multi-core boost clocks were set at 5.7 GHz and 5.0 GHz, respectively.

After AMD revealed the Zen 4 processors and their estimated performance against the Intel Alder Lake chips, all eyes are now on Intel Raptor Lake CPUs. During its Zen 4 reveal event, AMD announced that the 3D V-Cache variants of the new CPUs are on their way. In line with our previous report about the Zen 4X3D SKUs releasing within six months of the Zen 4 launch, leaker Greymon55 suggests that AMD might take the wraps off the Zen 4 CPUs with 3D cache at CES 2023.
