Verdict — Loud And Proud
As a performance-first gaming laptop, the HyperX Omen Max 16 is all about maximizing output from the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus CPU and 175 W GeForce RTX 5090 GPU. In fact, when set to Unleased mode, graphics draw can indeed reach almost the full 175 W target whereas most other gaming laptops tend to hover around 140 W or lower. The G-Sync support, integrated numpad, and rigid base help to cement the model as *the* heavy hitter and premier performer rivaling other giants like the MSI Titan or Alienware Area-51.
Other surprises include the long battery life and quiet fan noise when running less demanding loads. For such a large system, it can be quite reserved when all that extra horsepower isn't needed.
The biggest and most notable drawback is size and weight. Not only is the system slightly thicker and heavier than last year's Omen Max 16, but even its AC adapter is chunkier than most. Running both the demanding CPU and GPU at their respective maximums requires quite the beefy power brick, after all. Meanwhile, the speakers are weaker than expected and aren't punchy enough to overcome the loud 55+ dB(A) fans when gaming.

Cons
Price and Availability
Amazon is currently shipping the HP HyperX Omen Max 16 as configured in this review for $4400.
The HyperX Omen Max 16 is HP's premier 16-inch gaming laptop with top-of-the-line specifications. It's both a tier above the HyperX Omen 16 and a direct successor to last year's Omen Max 16 powered by the older Arrow Lake Core Ultra 9 275HX. HP is in the process of rebranding its Omen lineup with the HyperX name as announced earlier this year at CES.
Our test unit comes equipped with the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus CPU, 175 W GeForce RTX 5090 GPU, and 2.5K 240 Hz OLED display for approximately $4200. Lesser SKUs may ship with the RTX 5080 instead.
Competitors include other enthusiast-level gaming laptops like the Asus ROG Scar series, MSI Raider or Titan series, or the Dell Alienware 16 series.

Specifications
Case
The new design is slightly thicker and heavier than the outgoing 2025 model for a very densely packed feel. However, the taut and unyielding surfaces give a better sense of longevity than the typical ultrathin gaming models including HP's own Omen Transcend 16 series.

Sustainability
Much like on the standard Omen 16, the keyboard keycaps consist of post-consumer recycled plastics with no mention of other parts or recycled amounts. The packaging uses a bit of plastic for the AC adapter wrapping.
Input Devices
Display
Whereas the OLED display on last year's Omen Max 16 would top at almost 600 nits on HDR mode, the display on our newer HyperX Omen 16 can reach almost 1100 nits to support HDR1100. The two Samsung panels are otherwise nearly identical from their QHD+ native resolution, 240 Hz refresh rate, and full P3 colors. G-Sync is supported only when set to discrete graphics mode.
Note that switching between discrete graphics, integrated graphics, or Advanced Optimus requires a system reboot.

The display backlight flickers at 1439.8 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 1439.8 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 52 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 7605 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. | |||
