Verdict: A workhorse laptop with few flaws
When it comes to business laptops, HP has been a household name for many years, and so has been the EliteBook brand. The HP EliteBook 8 G2a 16 continues this strong tradition, with a robust aluminum chassis, good port selection and many security features, as well as a very good keyboard and bright, matte screen. Aside from that, the EliteBook also offers a great performance, thanks to its AMD Ryzen platform, and long battery life of almost 19 hrs. And it manages to deliver said performance without any throttling under load or running even slightly hot.
That, however, comes with a price: Under load, the fans run very loud in performance mode. Of course, when idling, they stay off, but it is something to be mindful of. Also, unexpected for a business laptop, the RAM is soldered, so while you already have 32 GB with our review device, you are also stuck with it. This is the case with our review model, at least, there should be upgradeable variants. And while those are some drawbacks, for us, the positives are more predominant, making the HP EliteBook 8 G2a 16 a great choice for a reliable work laptop.

Case, connectivity and input devices: RAM is soldered in EliteBook 8 G2a 16
As is usual for the EliteBook 8 series, HP uses aluminum for the chassis. Except for the keyboard, the screen bezel and the hinge-cover, the whole device is made out of the lightweight, silver metal. The laptop is aesthetically simple and perfectly suitable for a business environment, and comfortable to use with rounded corners and edges. The metal surfaces feel premium, and do not easily get dirty. Plus, the chassis is overall very stable and robust. It has a little more give than the expensive EliteBook X G2i, and the screen wobbles a bit more, but it is a good quality device. The screen can be opened with one hand, and the maximum viewing angle is around 166 degrees.
Getting to the inside of the HP laptop is easy, with four captive screws holding the bottom cover. The SSD, 5G card and Wi-Fi card are modular. Unfortunately, the RAM is soldered.
HP uses the standard backlit EliteBook keyboard with a numpad, a six row layout and matte grey Chiclet keys, and combines it with a mechanical glass clickpad (13.5 x 8.5 cm). Both input devices are great in terms of usability, and the keyboard especially is among the best for laptops, though the small arrow keys are a negative.
Display: A great screen for most people
HP lists a total of six different 16-inhc matte 16:10 panels in their specifications:

Our screen panel is a middle of the road solution, which should be a good choice for most users. It delivers a good level of brightness, 445 cd/m² on average, about the same as the Lenovo ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 - enough for using it outdoor, though maybe not in direct sunlight. There is no PWM, and this panel also offers almost 100 percent of the sRGB color gamut, making the EliteBook usable for simple photo editing. Overall, it is a suitable solution for using it day to day.

Testing Conditions
All benchmarks were run in "Best performance" mode, which keeps the TDP limits at 30 W at all times. The same power limits apply to the "Balanced" mode. For the "Best power efficiency", the limit changes to 25 W.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen AI 7 450 is a "Gorgon Point" processor with a total of eight cores, four Zen5 (up to 5.1 GHz) and four Zen5c (up to 3.6 GHz) cores. Thanks to hyperthreading, this 28 W TDP CPU has a total of sixteen threads. More detailed comparisons with other CPUs are possible with our CPU comparison list.
Performance wise, the HP laptop is basically identical to its predecessor. Performance is on a very good level, making the EliteBook laptop a good workhorse for pretty much anything, outside of straight workstation-tasks. Performance also does not drop during sustained load, nor does it get throttled in battery mode.

GPU and gaming
As a business laptop for office use, the HP EliteBook 8 G2a 16 does not contain a strong GPU, instead betting on a simple iGPU solution. In the case of our review unit, it is the AMD Radeon 860M. This GPU is certainly strong enough for simple tasks, and even some older games are playable. Compared to the average of the Radeon 860M, the EliteBook outperforms it by around 10 percent, probably due to the fast LPDDR5 memory.

Emissions & power consumption: The fans runs rather loud
System Noise
While the HP EliteBook 8 G2a 16 stays quiet during everyday use, it does get very loud when it is stressed. 50 dB(a) is a mark that usually only gaming laptops hit.

On the flip side of the high fan noise are the low chassis temperatures, barely reaching 40 degrees Celsius or 104 F.
Unsurprisingly, the HP laptop does not throttle during our stress test, as the active cooling system keeps temperatures down.

Compared to the earlier EliteBook 8 G1a 16, this new model has a slightly higher power consumption when idling. However, the power consumption is better in comparison to the Lenovo ThinkPad T16 Gen 5.
With its internal 77 Wh battery, the HP EliteBook 8 G2a 16 reaches almost 19 hrs of battery life in our Wi-Fi/websurfing test (150 cd/m²). This is better than all the other office laptops in our comparison.

Every year, Notebookcheck independently reviews hundreds of laptops and smartphones using standardized procedures to ensure that all results are comparable. We have continuously developed our test methods for around 20 years and set industry standards in the process. In our test labs, high-quality measuring equipment is utilized by experienced technicians and editors. These tests involve a multi-stage validation process.
