Verdict — Simple Office Clamshell Done Right
The Dell Pro 5 16 delivers a large screen size without the discrete graphics or 4K options than many users can live without. Prices therefore start at more reasonable levels to be a compelling no-frills enterprise solution especially for those who value AMD Pro or Intel vPro environments. Additionally, the removable RAM in particular deserves a mention as soldered memory is becoming commonplace on most other models.
Raw performance when configured with the Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 470 is impressive for a midrange business clamshell. Keep in mind that while the Intel SKUs have slightly slower processor performance than AMD, RAM speed can be faster since CAMM is only configurable with Intel at the moment.
There are a few minor annoyances worth mentioning most of which are likely deliberate to save on costs. USB-C charging, for example, is only available on the left edge of the system in contrast to the Dell Pro 7 14. SSD support is limited to just a short M.2 2242 drive with no secondary options as well. Lightweight magnesium composite, which is present on the Dell Pro 7, is missing on the Dell Pro 5. Skipping the lower-end display options is also recommended due to their noticeably poorer color reproduction. Nonetheless, the wide variety of integrated ports and optional WAN and 8 MP webcam should satisfy most office use cases.
Pros
Cons
Price and Availability
The Dell Pro 5 16 is currently shipping in both AMD and Intel options starting for around $2000 up to over $4500 if fully configured.
Much like how the Dell Pro 7 series succeeds the older Latitude 7000 series, the Dell Pro 5 series succeeds the older Latitude 5000 series. The Dell Pro 5 16 is a midrange business clamshell but with many of the same processor options as found on the pricier Dell Pro 7 series.
Our Dell Pro 5 16 test unit is a higher-end AMD configuration with the Ryzen AI 9 HX Pro 470 Zen 5 CPU and 1600p 120 Hz IPS display for approximately $4500. Lesser SKUs start with the Ryzen AI 5 Pro 435, 1200p 60 Hz display, and much less RAM for significantly less. This model is also available with Intel Core Series 3 options.
Alternatives to the Dell Pro 5 16 include other midrange business-centric laptops like the HP EliteBook 8 series, MSI Venture 16 AI, or the Lenovo ThinkPad E series.
