Verdict - ThinkPad T16 G5 is let down by the poor screen
The new ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 is a rather underwhelming business laptop with a premium price tag. The chassis changes are good and the improved repairability is definitely an advantage, but the overall user experience is affected by the poor screen. It only covers the sRGB gamut by 60 % and the image quality is pretty poor, which is hard to accept for premium T-series. There are optional screens with more color gamut, but no options with higher resolutions and/or refresh rates. The other problem of our entry-level review unit is the rather disappointing performance in general with the old Zen 4 processor, 16 GB RAM and the small 512 GB SSD.
There are obviously positive aspects as well, including the connectivity features and ports including Wi-Fi 7 as well as Thunderbolt 4, the comfortable input devices and also the long battery runtime. We were also surprised by the sound quality, which is very good, not only for a business laptop. The fan is also very quiet, but spins up occasionally even while idling, which is annoying. All in all, the T16 Gen 5 is a good business laptop, but it is held back by the display. We strongly recommend you get the better display option if you are interested in this device.
Pros
Cons
The ThinkPad T16 is Lenovo's premium business laptop with a large 16-inch screen and there have been some changes for the new G5 generation. You can still decide between AMD and Intel chips and our review unit today is the entry-level model with an AMD Ryzen PRO CPU, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD as well as the standard IPS screen. While the specs are mediocre, the price is still pretty high at $1639.
Specifications
Case and Connectivity
Lenovo changed the chassis construction for the new Gen 5 model of the T16, even though the overall visual appearance is still pretty much the same as before, including the camera bump. The most obvious change is the new central hinge design (instead of two smaller hinges), so the lower bezel is a bit smaller. The overall quality is still excellent, even though it might not feel very premium due to the use of plastic. The surfaces do not attract as much dirt as expected and the stability is excellent without any creaking sounds. The hinges are well adjusted and the maximum opening angle is 180 degrees. Maintenance options are limited to a single M.2-2280 SSD, you get two regular SO-DIMM slots for RAM and you can clean the fan.
Connectivity is very good with Wi-Fi 7, Gigabit-Ethernet and antennas for an LTE module (antennas preinstalled) as well as a sufficient number of ports including Thunderbolt 4. Wi-Fi 7 performance is okay and stable around 2 Gbps and the 5 MP camera with mechanical shutter (and IR) takes decent pictures.

Input Devices
The backlit keyboard still features a travel of 1.5 mm and the familiar shape, but the lettering has changed and is now in the middle of the keys. The typing experience is very good with crisp key strokes. You also get a numpad on the right side. The T16 still features the Trackpoint with mechanical keys and they work very well. The clickpad itself is shifted toward the left side and a bit smaller (11.5 x 6.7 cm) but offers good gliding capabilities and the mechanical clicks in the lower half are not too loud.
Display - Mediocre IPS screen
This is probably the most controversial section, because even though this is a premium business laptop, Lenovo only offers Full-HD panel with 60 Hz and the basic panel in our review unit only covers around ~60 % of the sRGB color gamut. The image quality is therefore not great and colors look a bit pale. The brightness is actually decent at 450 nits on average, but the black value is affected (0.51), so the contrast ratio is only 939:1. There is some backlight bleeding at higher brightness levels, but the response times are okay and there is no PWM flickering.
Our analysis with the professional CalMAN software once again confirms that this is a budget IPS panel. While the grayscale performance is decent, the color accuracy is simply pretty bad and this cannot be fixed with our own calibration, either. The panel simply cannot represent colors accurately. Considering the price range, an IPS screen with 100 % sRGB should be the default option.

Lenovo's own power modes are synced with the Windows settings. We used the Best Performance mode for our benchmarks.
Processor
The AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 215 (Hawk Point) offer eight cores (4x Zen 4, 4x Zen 4c) and is a very slow processor for a 2026 model. It is sufficient for basic office tasks, but the T16 G5 is also available with Zen 5 Gorgon Point CPUs (up to Ryzen AI 7 PRO 450). The CPU can consume up to 51 Watts for a brief moment and then levels off at 32 Watts, so the performance is at least stable, both under sustained workloads as well as battery power.

System Performance
Thanks to the SSD, the T16 G5 is still a snappy system and you can upgrade the RAM with a second module (max. 64 GB, Gorgon Point SKUs up to 96 GB). We did not experience any stability issues.

Storage Devices
The T16 G5 AMD offers a single M.2-2280 slot (PCIe 4.0 for Hawk point models) and our review unit is equipped with a Samsung PM9C1b with a capacity of just 512 GB (423 GB free). Transfer rates are okay and stay stable under sustained workloads.

GPU Performance
The integrated Radeon 740M can handle basic office task, but is a pretty slow iGPU in general and gaming is pretty much impossible except for very simple titles in combination with low settings. With a dual-channel RAM setup, you can expect around 25 % more performance.

System Noise
The T16 G5 is a very quiet device in general and the fan noise is not too loud even under maximum load (34 dB(A)), but the problem is that the fan occasionally starts spinning for about two seconds even while idling. This is not loud, but just annoying and we hope Lenovo fixes this behavior with a BIOS update. There were no other electronic noises.

Speakers
Lenovo has improved the speaker quality (2x 2W) and the sound is actually surprisingly good, not only for a business laptop. The microphones also work really well, so a headset is not really necessary for good audio quality in conference calls.

Battery Life
The battery is not secured by screws anymore and can easily be replaced if necessary, but the capacity is lower than before (75 vs. 86 Wh). In our Wi-Fi test at 150 nits, the new G5 model lasts almost 16 hours. This is a good result and only around 1.5 hours shorter compared to the old G4 model. At full brightness, the review unit manages 11.5 hours, which is impressive, while the (slightly brighter) G4 review unit lasted ~10.5 hours.
