Verdict - ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 AMD is a good business computer, but could be even better
The Lenovo ThinkPad T16 Gen 4 with the AMD processor left a good overall impression in our test. You get a high-quality and stable business laptop with comfortable input devices and a bright display that only lacks a higher frequency. On the other hand, the low-power display requires little power, which leads to very long battery runtimes. The RAM can also be upgraded (max. 128 GB RAM) and there are plenty of ports, with the AMD model now also supporting Thunderbolt 4.
Nevertheless, it has to be said that Lenovo is wasting potential here, as Lenovo uses the motherboard from the smaller ThinkPad T14, including the cooling unit with a fan. For a large 16-inch computer, the processor performance of 28 watts TDP is lower than one might expect. With a different mainboard and larger cooling (2 fans), you could get a little more performance out of the AMD processor without affecting the noise level. There would also be room for an additional M.2 slot.
All in all, the ThinkPad T16 is still a good business notebook and in comparison with the HP EliteBook 8 G1a 16 there are many similarities. The T16 offers slightly less performance and is also thicker, and the speakers are weaker. However, Lenovo is ahead in terms of fan volume and battery life.

Cons
Price and availability
Our test device is available as a student version at Campuspoint for 1,349 Euros (~$1556) without operating system. At Lenovo, the T16 Gen 4 starts at 1,579 Euros (~$1821).
With the ThinkPad T16, Lenovo offers a high-quality business laptop in a 16-inch format. We are testing the AMD version of the new T16 Gen 4 with the Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD and the 500-nit LowPower display in the campus version for 1,349 Euros (~$1556, without operating system). The regular price including Windows is currently just over 1,700 Euros (~$1961).
Specifications
Case & Equipment
The ThinkPad T16 fits into Lenovo's current design language, so it has a dark casing (dark gray instead of black) with a slight camera hump. In terms of materials, however, the T-series differs from the cheaper models in its materials utilizing a composite of plastic, carbon and fiberglass, with magnesium added to the base unit. The surfaces are slightly textured and are less prone to smudges than smooth surfaces. The overall stability is very good, but the device is also surprisingly thick for a modern business laptop. The hinges are well adjusted and the screen only bounces minimally, but they are also smooth-running. The maximum opening angle is 180 degrees.
There are two full Thunderbolt 4 ports and two regular USB-A ports. Our test device also has a nano SIM card reader, and a SmartCard reader is also available as an option. The Wi-Fi 7 module achieved stable and high transfer rates in the test. The 5 MP webcam with mechanical aperture and IR sensor takes average pictures.

Sustainability
The ThinkPad T16 offers some environmental certifications such as Energy Star 9.0 or EPEAT Gold, but Lenovo does not provide any information on the CO2 footprint or the use of recycled materials. The packaging is fully recyclable.
Maintenance
The lower housing cover is screwed on and can be easily removed. You can access the fan, the battery, the two RAM slots and the M.2 2280 SSD. The antennas for a WWAN module are also installed on our test device. The keyboard can also be easily replaced by loosening two screws on the underside.
Input devices
The backlit keyboard including number pad corresponds to the current ThinkPad standard, but benefits from the stable base unit. The typing experience is therefore very comfortable and even long texts can be written without any problems. The TrackPoint also works reliably, but the associated keys are a little loud and don't feel particularly high-quality. The ClickPad itself is clearly shifted to the left, but the pointer control works without any problems.
Display - Matt IPS panel
The matte Full HD panel (IPS, 1,920 x 1,200 pixels) in the LowPower version is installed in our test device. The subjective picture quality is good and the colors are vibrant, and even bright surfaces do not appear grainy. There are also no problems with PWM flickering and the response times are acceptable, although the panel only supports 60 Hz. Overall, however, it is well suited for working.
The brightness is advertised as 500 cd/m², which our sample doesn't quite reach (max. 489, average: ~470 cd/m²). However, the black level is low, which leads to a very good maximum contrast ratio. The factory calibration is weak and we can significantly improve the display with our own calibration (profile is available for free download in the box on the right), but this also reduces the maximum brightness by around 40 cd/m². Thanks to the full sRGB coverage, image editing is also possible.

Performance - AMD Ryzen Pro
Test conditions
Lenovo's energy profiles are linked to the Windows energy settings on the ThinkPads. We ran the benchmarks in Best Performance mode.
Processor
Our T16 is equipped with the AMD Ryzen AI 7 PRO 350 (Krakan Point), which offers a total of 8 cores (4x Zen 5, 4x Zen 5c). The processor can consume 51 watts for a short time and then quickly stabilizes at 28 watts, which is why the performance drops by around 13% under continuous load. Overall, the CPU performance is decent and sufficient for a business laptop, but competitors with higher power limits offer slightly more performance. The performance remains stable in battery mode.

GPU performance
The graphics card is the integrated Radeon 860M, which performs well in everyday use, but there are not many reserves for gaming. However, if you want to play some games with the ThinkPad T16 after work, you can of course connect an external GPU to improve the gaming performance. The performance remains stable under prolonged load as well as in battery mode.

Temperature
In normal everyday use, the surface temperatures are absolutely uncritical. However, if the processor is used over a longer period of time, there are hotspots of more than 50 °C (122 °F) on the underside. Direct skin contact should therefore be avoided. In the stress test, the SoC remains stable at 28 watts after an initial 51 watts.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 44.4 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.

Energy consumption
The T16 is quite economical for a 16-inch laptop and we only measured 9.1 watts in idle mode even at maximum brightness. In the stress test it is briefly ~84 watts, but this quickly levels off at ~47 watts. The 100 watt power supply is therefore sufficiently sized.

Battery life
The combination of 86 Wh battery and the low-power display enables very good runtimes. In the WLAN test with 150 cd/m² (corresponds to 66% of the maximum brightness), we measured around 17 hours and even at full brightness 10.5 hours. These results are significantly better than the competition.
