Minisforum V3 3-in-1 review: the first ever Windows tablet with AMD's Hawk Point APU aka the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U

The Minisforum V3 represents a completely new approach taken by the Chinese system manufacturer, with this model being a 14-inch Windows tablet. The device is equipped with AMD's Hawk Point APU—more specifically the Ryzen 7 8840U, which is frugal but also just as powerful. Its iGPU is the AMD Radeon 780M which delivers impressive 3D performance. It is fitted with 32 GB LPDDR5 RAM and our test sample features 1 TB of storage. Currently, the Minisforum V3 costs US$1,199.00 and can be purchased directly from the manufacturer. This price, however, is part of a presale deal, which also includes the V Pen, a screen protector as well as a laptop sleeve. The V Pen alone will later cost US$99, and the V3 tablet with a keyboard and back cover has an MRSP of US$1,499.

Case - Magnesium and care during use
The Minisforum V3's case is made from a magnesium alloy, meaning it is very stable while still remaining lightweight. The tablet itself is very resistant to being twisted, whereas the keyboard can be twisted a bit easier. It doesn't feature an integrated stand, such as the one on the Microsoft Surface. The V3 can only be propped up in combination with the magnetic back cover. In doing so, you need to be extremely careful not to cover the ventilation openings for both fans. We, too, used the cover wrong at first and had to consult the manufacturer. The hinge built into the cover itself is quite stiff at first, which is what initially stopped us from being able to fold it as far as was needed. As an intuitive solution, you tend to use the back cover incorrectly, which results in significantly poorer cooling.
We have nothing negative to say about the tablet's construction. It has a high-quality feel and together with its keyboard and back cover, the tablet is protected very well during transportation. Unfortunately, the stylus can't be housed within the device. Instead, it attaches magnetically to the top when not in use.
We have another small point of critique regarding the SD card reader's cover: In general, we welcome the use of a dust protection cap. However, it protrudes slightly from the device and is not firmly attached to the device, which can result in it being lost.
Connectivity - Minimalistic but modern
In terms of connectivity, the Minisforum V3 doesn't offer a lot but in turn, you do get two USB4 ports. These are also used to charge the device. When using various accessories, the tablet can even be charged at the same time. One example of this would be external graphics adapters—we will go into the tablet's 3D performance using these a bit later on. The Minisforum V3 also features a VLink port that can be used as an input for a DisplayPort signal. If the device is switched off, the tablet can then also be used as an external monitor if needed. Phones, tablets or game consoles can be used with the tablet, opening up even more potential fields of use. The tablet's keyboard and touchpad can then be used as input devices. Furthermore, the V3 tablet is equipped with an SD card reader with UHS-II support. Unfortunately, it isn't fitted with a conventional Type-A USB port.

Communication
Minisforum has installed an Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 into the V3 for wireless communication. The WLAN module can thankfully also work with the 6-GHz frequency band, which results in much better data rates compared to when using the 5-GHz area. However, its competitors deliver slightly better transfer rates. At the same time, we never had any connection issues during our test. In addition, we actually even noted relatively stable transfer rates. We used the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 as a test router. The Minisforum V3 doesn't offer an alternative network connection. Alternatively, wired network connections are supported via USB-C with the help of an Ethernet adapter, but the tablet doesn't come delivered with one.
Webcam
The Minisforum V3 features a 2.0-MP webcam on the front and a 5.0-MP module on the back. Compared to the Microsoft Surface Pro 9, the Minisforum V3 has a considerably worse configuration. In terms of quality, neither of the cameras are very good. They deliver too little detail and washed-out colors.

Accessories
The Minisforum V3 comes with a detachable keyboard and a magnetic back cover that can also be used as a stand. We already discussed what you have to pay attention to when using the latter. The V Pen can be purchased separately for US$99 if you haven't made use of the manufacturer's presale offer. A small 65-watt power supply with a corresponding cable is also delivered with the tablet.
Maintenance
The Minisforum V3 only features minimal maintenance options. It doesn't have a maintenance hatch. The LPDDR5 RAM is soldered on anyway and cannot be replaced. Only the SSD could technically be swapped out, as the manufacturer advised us. In order to avoid damaging the device, we refrained from disassembling it.
Input devices
Keyboard
The Minisforum V3 comes delivered with a detachable keyboard. You can choose from a variety of alternative layouts when ordering—our test sample came delivered with a UK layout. First of all, we have nothing to criticize about the keyboard's build. The soft-touch surface next to the clickpad and around the keys gives users a pleasant tactile feel. The detachable keyboard boasts great stability, too. Compared to a conventional convertible laptop, this input device is a little more flexible but even so, it is still constructed relatively stably. After all, it also protects the screen when folded. The keys themselves are around 15 x 15 millimeters in size and have no texture. Their pressure point is noticeable but could have been a little firmer. It is easy to find your way around and the most important functions are all available. It also features four-level backlighting.
Touchpad
The clickpad measures 11 x 6.5 centimetres and is perfectly integrated into the keyboard. Its surface is very smooth, which can become a small issue for sweaty fingers. The input field reacts quickly and inputs are recognized precisely. We did not notice any imprecise areas, primarily in the corners or edges. Inputs are acknowledged with a quiet click. You don't necessarily always have to press a little harder in the lower third—the entire surface can be used. Nevertheless, you have to select the lower area when right-clicking. Alternatively, there are also the familiar multi-touch input options using multiple fingers.
Display - 2.5K, 165 Hz and 16:10 aspect ratio
The installed display consists of a 16:10 panel with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels, resulting in a diagonal of 14 inches. Moreover, the Minisforum V3's display supports a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz. According to the manufacturer's specifications, it can reach brightness levels of up to 500 cd/m². In general, the manufacturer has been able to keep this promise, as our measurement results revealed. Our test sample's average brightness values, however, were still good (495 cd/m²). At 91 per cent, the Minisforum V3's illumination is pretty even and we didn't note any annoying levels of backlight bleeding. On the other hand, the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 shows that even better values are possible. The Minisforum V3 can't keep up with its competitors when it comes to its black value—this can be seen when taking a look at its contrast ratio. In turn, our test sample did well when it came to its response times. They are very short and only the Robo & Kala TW220 was able to deliver even better values. Another positive to note is that we didn't measure any PWM across all of the tablet's brightness levels.

* ... smaller is better
Straight out of the box, its Delta-E-2000 color deviations compared to the sRGB color space are slightly higher than what the comparison devices deliver. However, we wouldn't class these results as bad by any means. Our manual calibration didn't result in any noticeable improvements at this stage. The Minisforum V3 delivered relatively good color space coverage results, although it didn't quite manage to cover the P3 color space by 100 per cent. Still, our test sample's 97.7 per cent is an excellent result.

The Minisforum V3's screen surface is coated with a slight anti-reflection layer which is supposed to mitigate any annoying reflections. In tricky situations, such as when being used outside, not all reflections can be prevented. Still, it is possible to use the tablet outside as long as you sit in the shade and avoid direct sunlight.
Performance - AMD Ryzen 7 8840U with 8 cores and 16 threads
The Minisforum V3 is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U processor. As a result, the tablet has been fitted with a very powerful and yet still quite frugal CPU. The AMD Radeon 780M continues to be a powerful iGPU that enables simple gaming. Together with its 32 GB RAM which runs at 6,400 MT/s, the iGPU benefits from the fast RAM.
Testing conditions
All performance tests were carried out using the energy profile balanced. We did not change the SoC's power consumption limits and instead left them in their factory condition according to the BIOS settings. Deviating energy-saving plans were only used for our power consumption measurements and the noise emission measurements according to our test criteria.
Software - Minisforum dashboard
Minisforum delivers the V3 with its in-house dashboard. The tool contains a number of links to various system settings and it also provides feedback on the current system status. The dashboard can also be used to limit the processor's performance. The various modes limit the SoC's performance to 15, 22 or 28 watts. The latter is the maximum power consumption which is available to the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U. It is also important to know that the display only works at 165 Hz when using the Power Premium mode. The other two modes set the screen's refresh rate to 60 Hz. Nevertheless, its frame rate can be manually set back to 165 Hz, but this is a bit annoying in the long run. At this point, we would have liked an additional mode to create our own custom profile. Furthermore, the device's battery must have a charge level of at least 21 per cent and the tablet must be connected to the mains in order to activate this Power Premium mode at all. In battery mode, the CPU's power consumption is limited to a maximum of 18 watts.
Processor
The Minisforum V3 is quipped with the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U processor. It is based on the Hawk Point series which runs with Zen 4 and Zen 4c cores together. With four computing cores each, this results in a total of eight computing units. Its power consumption is indicated to be 28 watts and the Minisforum V3 was able to reach this value. During our test, the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U boasted impressive performance. Even during longer load scenarios, the tablet had no problems whatsoever—this is reflected in its Cinebench R15 continuous loop results. It was able to reach its maximum power consumption with every cycle and this value was then maintained permanently. This is a stable result that the competitors simply cannot deliver. In battery mode, the processor's performance is slightly worse, as Minisforum limits its power consumption to 18 watts.

System performance
Subjectively, the Minisforum V3's performance is excellent—all inputs were executed with no hesitation. The combination of a modern SoC, fast DDR5 RAM and a PCIe SSD works very well in this case, which is reflected in the tablet's benchmark results.

DPC latencies
The Minisforum V3 had no issues opening multiple tabs using the Edge browser. We already achieved the documented value while surfing in the Edge browser. Playing back the 4K test video and our brief stress test using Prime95 did not harm its latencies.

Storage device
The Minisforum V3 uses a fast NVMe SSD (M.2-2280) from Kingston as its system drive. The installed SSD has a capacity of 1 TB and in many ways, it is faster than the ones in the competitor devices. However, the Minisforum V3 only has space for one storage device. Upgrading is not possible without further ado, as there is no maintenance hatch on the tablet. The device has to be dismantled to access its mass storage. Due to its temperature, the built-in SSD struggles with performance losses under load. We repeatedly noted significant performance drops, but these shouldn't be noticeable in everyday use.
For further comparisons and benchmarks, take a look at our comparison table.

Graphics card
In receiving a Zen4 APU, the Minisforum V3 benefits from one of the currently most powerful iGPUs, namely the AMD Radeon 780M. In our test sample, it is only limited by the APU's TDP. Meanwhile, the same iGPU is also used in other APUs from AMD, which have a higher TDP and, conversely, can also deliver better 3D performance. With its 28 watts within the Minisforum V3, the tablet's cooling unit copes excellently and makes a relatively constant performance possible.
The comparison shows that our Minisforum V3 delivered an excellent performance in the synthetic performance tests when it came to 3D performance. Intel's Iris Xe iGPUs were not able to keep up. As a counterpart to AMD's Radeon 780M, however, Intel has given its iGPUs a makeover. The significantly more powerful iGPUs from Intel now go by the name of Intel Arc 8. We have included the Acemagic F2A in the graphics for comparison. However, we noted no noticeable advantage over the AMD Radeon 780M.
You can find further benchmarks for the AMD Radeon 780M here.

Gaming performance
The AMD Radeon 780M is capable of playing many older games and also some newer ones. Here too, Minisforum was usually able to take the lead with its V3 tablet. We aren't including the Geekom A7 in our evaluation at this point—we have included this device in the comparison to illustrate that an AMD Radeon 780M can also deliver more performance if the SoC has more power available. For this reason, each device must be considered individually. It is therefore not possible to make a general statement regarding performance. Our test sample delivers the best gaming performance in comparison with the other convertibles. However, the AMD Radeon 780M can't keep up with other devices with dedicated graphics adapters. Alternatively, the Minisforum V3 tablet can also be combined with external graphics cards. We have taken a closer look at this option in the following section.
For an overview of the iGPU's performance in comparison to other graphics cards, please take a look at our GPU games list.

It already became obvious that the Minisforum V3 has been fitted with a good cooling unit when taking a look at the Cinebench R15 loop. We noted no noticeable performance loss even under continuous 3D load. As you can see in the diagram, the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 was also able to deliver stable performance values. However, its general 3D performance is a lot worse than that of the Minisforum V3.

The Minisforum V3 tablet with two eGPUs - performance check
The Minisforum V3 tablet can be used as a gaming laptop with the help of specialized accessories. External graphics cards can be connected via USB4. We tested our test sample with a GPD G1 (AMD Radeon RX7600XM XT) and a Razer Core X in combination with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. The V3 tablet doesn't feature an OCuLink connection, which is why the GPD G1 can't be used to its full potential. Even so, lots of games can be played at high to maximum settings using these expansions. Assuming that no separate display is used, the tablet's performance with the external GPUs is somewhat lower than that of the comparison devices.
These tests had no influence on the tablet's 3D performance evaluation. These are only additional tests to show what performance can be expected.

Emissions - The Minisforum V3 is not a miracle of efficiency
Noise emissions
The measured noise emissions show that the Minisforum V3 is relatively quiet. However, the two fans are always working, although they can only be heard quietly at a maximum of 32.5 dB(A) when the tablet is idling. Under load, its noise emissions rise only slightly to a peak of 34 dB(A). Subjectively, however, the Minisforum V3 feels somewhat louder, which is due to the fans' high-frequency noise being emitted. However, at no point will these noise emissions get in your way.

Stress test
However, Minisforum has the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U's temperatures well under control. In the stress test, the SoC's temperatures only rose to 76.3 °C. You don't have to fear a reduction in performance at any time.
Speakers
The Minisforum V3 has four speakers located on its sides. If the device is held in your hands, the openings tend to be covered. In normal use using the back cover as a stand and the keyboard, there are no problems. The way the speakers are arranged prevents a spatial sound experience. Nevertheless, their stereo sound is good and can get quite loud. At maximum volume, the trebles dominate, which can get unpleasant at times. Voices are clearly audible and there was no distortion or rattling with our test system. There are no sound optimizations available via the Minisforum dashboard. Two microphones are housed on the top to enable video telephone calls. Alternatively, the Minisforum V3 offers a 3.5-mm jack to connect a headset, for example.

Power management
Power consumption
The Minisforum V3 fails slightly when it comes to its power requirement. We already documented quite high values when the tablet was idling, which had a negative effect on its runtimes during the later course of our test. Under average load, its power consumption is about 52 watts. We noted quite a high value due to its stable CPU performance that didn't need to be thermally throttled at any point. We measured even higher peaks of 61.2 watts. The device comes with a 65-watt power supply which had no issues supplying our test sample with power during the course of our test. The Minisforum V3 can also be used with other USB-C power supplies. If you use an external graphics card or a USB-C dock, then you can simultaneously use these as a power supply replacement.

Runtimes
Minisforum has installed a tight 51-Wh battery in the V3 tablet. Compared to its competitors, our test sample achieved good average results—if you only compare capacities. When comparing its performance, our test sample can't keep up with the comparison devices. The WLAN test already ended after around 6 hours. If you would like to predominantly use the tablet on the go, then you won't be able to avoid having to charge it during your work day. The battery charges pretty quickly—it already reaches 80 per cent after one hour. You should be aware of the tablet's throttled performance when it is disconnected from the mains.

Verdict - Good performance and lots of potential fields of use
First and foremost, the Minisforum V3 offers a lot of performance within a very small space. Minisforum has installed the latest hardware into its Windows tablet, and the Chinese manufacturer hasn't done anything wrong by going for the AMD Ryzen 7 8840U. The powerful SoC's AMD Radeon 780M is a powerful iGPU which is superior to the current Intel counterparts with the same power consumption. This modern tablet features a base configuration of 32 GB RAM and a 1-TB SSD. Unfortunately, the components can't be easily replaced. However, its generous amount of storage should be sufficient for most users for the time being. Alternatively, the tablet can also accommodate full-sized SD cards. Lots of data can be transferred effortlessly thanks to its UHS-II speeds. Wireless communication is only fast when using the 6-GHz frequency band. In this case, the competition is capable of better. Even so, its wireless connection is still stable and as long as you don't try to transfer vast amounts of data, you should be perfectly happy with what the Minisforum device delivers.
The Minisforum V3 offers lots of performance – nevertheless, its minimalist configuration enables almost limitless fields of use.
The tablet's build is flawless and in addition, Minisforum has used high-quality materials. Due to its low build height, the V3 tablet has only received a limited number of external ports. Thankfully, the manufacturer has included two USB4 ports, meaning the device scores an important point when it comes to how future-proof it is. Third-party manufacturers offer plenty of options which can make up for its missing connections—first an foremost being a USB-C dock. You can also get a lot out of the tablet in terms of performance, as external graphics cards can turn the tablet into a powerful PC for gaming. As a result of the bandwidth restrictions posed by USB4, you will unfortunately still have to deal with some limitations. It's a shame that Minisforum hasn't added an OCuLink connection.
Its display is good and delivers consistently acceptable brightness values. When it comes to color accuracy, Minisforum has succeeded, sometimes even achieving better values than quite a few competitors. A positive to mention is its 165-Hz refresh rate as well as its short response times. On the other hand, this 2.5K display can't come near the good values which an OLED panel can deliver.
Aside from the tablet itself, its scope of delivery even includes a keyboard dock and a back cover that can also be used as a stand. Unfortunately, its correct handling isn't entirely intuitive, so you should definitely keep that in mind. The Minisforum V3 scores another plus point with its VLink port, which can be used as a display input. This transforms the tablet into a portable monitor with which you can operate other devices. Alternatively, the tablet can then also be used as a second monitor for a laptop. This feature could be really useful, perhaps even resulting in you not having to buy an additional portable monitor.
Price and availability
The Minisforum V3 can be ordered directly from the manufacturer's website. It is currently running a limited-time early bird offer which costs US$1,199.00—this includes a V Pen, screen protector and a laptop sleeve. The keyboard dock and back cover are always included with the tablet.
