Lenovo ThinkPad X12 laptop review: Detachable with Intel Core i3 is quite slow

12 inches - this size has largely disappeared from the laptop market. There used to be a selection of 12-inch laptops every year, especially business laptops, but nowadays the smallest notebooks for business customers have 13-inch screens. Niches, where smaller screens continue to exist, are tablets and detachable models - those like the Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable.
The configuration of today's test device is similarly niche - a dual-core processor in a laptop in 2022, that does not happen that often anymore, either. We have already tested the ThinkPad X12 with a quad-core chip, so our review today will skip the sections about the design, the equipment, and the input devices. Information about these topics can be found in the already mentioned detailed review of the ThinkPad X12 with i7 CPU.

Display: ThinkPad tablet in 3:2 format
Lenovo only uses one display for the ThinkPad X12 Detachable: a 12.3-inch FHD+ panel (1,920 x 1,280) in a 3:2 format. The screen is glossy with an anti-reflective coating, which means reduced reflections. According to Lenovo, the ThinkPad X12 is supposed to achieve a brightness value of 400 cd/m². Unfortunately, the panel installed here achieves a considerably lower value of 324 cd/m². We were probably just unlucky with the series deviations because the already tested Lenovo X12 with i7 achieved much better rates - but the difference is so big that one could almost suspect a defect. In return, the panel tested here scores better in terms of response times.

Performance: ThinkPad X12 with i3 only for simple tasks
Lenovo provides the Intel CPUs from the "Tiger-Lake-UP4" series with 8 or 16 GB LPDDR4X-4266 memory and an upgradeable M.2-2242 SSD. On the other hand, the memory is soldered. There is also no dGPU in this compact tablet. The ThinkPad X12 relies fully on the integrated Intel iGPU.
Test conditions
For prolonged load, a power limit of only 10.5 watts applies in the Windows performance mode "Best Performance", which was active during our performance tests. For short-term load, the CPU of the Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable can consume up to 22 watts.
Processor
An Intel Core i3-1110G4 is a Tiger Lake processor from the UP4 series. This means that this dual-core processor has a typical consumption (TDP) of 15 watts. The two cores (four threads thanks to Hyperthreading) clock with 2.5 to 3.9 GHz. Our CPU benchmark list will help to compare the chip with other CPUs.
CPUs with only two cores are rare these days. Our benchmarks also clearly show why: the performance clearly lags behind the other detachable with four cores. The ThinkPad X12 achieves much higher performance with twice as many cores. The dual-core variant on the other hand is only suitable for the lightest tasks in everyday office and internet use.
The CPU performance is on the same level in battery mode as with the power supply connected.

System performance
You should not run multiple applications simultaneously on Lenovo's ThinkPad X12. The system performance is sufficient for smooth browsing and office use, but it is considerably lower than the other Windows tablets with four cores in the benchmarks.

Storage Devices
The M.2-2242 SSD in Lenovo's ThinkPad X12 Detachable is limited to NVMe PCIe 3.0. The Toshiba SSD installed here with a capacity of 256 GB, therefore, lags behind the competition in the benchmarks.

Graphics card
Actually the Intel UHD Graphics 620 has been superseded by Intel Xe, but it has survived in inexpensive i3 CPUs like in the ThinkPad X12. Its performance is on a low level, it is only suitable for the simplest games from the Microsoft Store, older titles in the lowest resolution level, or 4K video playback.

Noise emissions
Compared to the ThinkPad X12 Detachable with i7 CPU the fan behavior has changed slightly. The average load volume is lower, but the fan gets a bit louder under maximum load. Presumably, Lenovo adjusted the behavior via BIOS update. Overall, the Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable remains mostly silent during use. We did not hear any noise from the X12.

Temperature
In view of the weak processor, it is by no means surprising that Lenovo's ThinkPad X12 Detachable stays extremely cool and undercuts its i7 counterpart by several degrees. 39.8 degrees Celsius at the back are the absolute maximum in the stress test. The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 with its much faster processor gets noticeably warmer with a maximum of 47.2 degrees Celsius
After one hour of stress testing, the two cores still clock at 1 GHz and the processor consumes around 10 watts. However, this TDP throttling will not have an impact on everyday use.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 36.1 °C / 97 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 60 °C for the class Convertible.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39.8 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 23.3 °C / 74 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 26.1 °C / 79 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28 °C / 82.4 F (+1.9 °C / 3.4 F).

Speaker
The speakers of the Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable lack bass and also volume. The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 proves that a tablet does not have to deliver bad sound. Its speakers get louder, deliver more bass, and are simply more balanced overall.

Energy consumption
The energy consumption at idle is lower than that of the ThinkPad X12 with i7 CPU and also with the Microsoft Surface Pro 8. However, the Dell Latitude 7320 is even more frugal in this respect.
The maximum energy consumption is 55 watts and thus clearly below the power supply capacity of 65 watts. However, an even narrower 45-watt power supply would not be sufficient under maximum load.
