Review: The Asus ExpertCenter PN42 barebone has been given a frugal Intel N200 and DDR4 RAM
Asus' ExpertCenter models are marketed as versatile mini PCs with a wide variety of uses. Visually, the different models are almost identical. From a performance standpoint, you can choose the devices with frugal SoCs, all the way to considerably more powerful ones. In this review, however, we will be taking a closer look at the ExpertCenter PN42, of which we have a barebone model. This means that RAM and storage devices have to be installed yourself. This may well be better value for money for those with very specific RAM and SSD requests. Our test sample, fitted with the Intel N200, can currently be found for US$220.
For this test, we equipped the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 with components from our inventory, namely 16 GB DDR4 RAM as well as a 2-TB SSD. These are both not included in the previously mentioned price. In this review, we will be pitting the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 against similarly configured competitors — all of which we have previously taken a closer look at. You can find an overview of all these comparison devices below.

The Asus ExpertCenter PN42 in detail
Case - Stable plastic case
Visually, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 is relatively inconspicuous. Its case is made predominantly from black plastic with fan outlet slits located on every side. On the inside, the device is stabilized by a metal cage, giving it good stability. With a footprint of 13.2 × 12.7 centimeters, it's quite small — although there are definitely more compact devices on the market. A few examples of this are the Blackview MP80 and the Ace Magician T8Pro. Our test device is built well and we didn't note any sharp corners or fit inaccuracies. Similar to other mini PCs, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 can also be attached to a monitor using a (in this case supplied) VESA mount.
Connectivity
The Asus ExpertCenter PN42 has a generous selection of connectivity options: Its total of seven USB ports is not the standard on mini PCs. Adding to this is an analogue monitor connection, which may still be used for very specific peripheral devices. Of course, the PC also has modern ports, such as HDMI and DisplayPort, so you can use current displays without any limitations. Additionally, the device features an infrared sensor on the front which can be paired with an optional remote control.
Communication
The Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 module installed into the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 delivers impressive results. None of the competitors in this comparison could keep up with our test sample. Furthermore, we noted very good consistency without any performance drops when it came to sending and receiving. For this test, we used our Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 as a test router. If you prefer a wired connection, then you can also use the ExpertCenter PN42's 2.5-G LAN port to connect to the web.
Accessories
Aside from the device itself, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42's scope of delivery includes a 65-watt power connection, a selection of information leaflets as well as a VESA mounting plate.
Maintenance
As you have the option to purchase the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 as a barebone model, it is important that the device can be opened up easily so you can install RAM and SSD components. In order to do so, you just have to take off the bottom plate, which is easily done. You can only equip the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 with one SO-DIMM module and one NVMe SSD. For this test, we used 16 GB DDR4 RAM and a 2-TB SSD (Kingston KC3000).
Performance - Intel N200 with four cores
Fitted with the Intel N200, the SoC features four native computing cores which, unfortunately, can only work with a low power consumption. The power limits are set at 6 to 25 watts. However, it didn't even get close to reaching these 25 watts during our test, meaning the processor can't make use of its full potential. A 16-GB DDR4 RAM module and a 2-TB SSD accompany the SoC.
Testing conditions
We ran all performance tests using the energy profile balanced. Deviating power-saving profiles were only used for the power consumption measurements and the noise emission measurements. You can find further information about our test criteria here.
Processor
The Intel N200 is the powerhouse of the Asus ExpertCenter PN42. The processor, based on Alder Lake, offers four native cores and a clock rate of up to 3.7 GHz. According to its specs, the SoC can run at up to 25 watts, which complies with its short-term PL 2 (Power Limit). In our test system, the SoC is cooled passively — this is likely part of the reason why the supposedly faster processor can't keep up with the competition. Compared to the Trigkey G4 with an Intel 100, our test sample lost out by 19 per cent in its performance rating. The Asus ExpertCenter PN42's RAM only uses the DDR4 standard. The Intel N200 could easily have been combined with slightly faster DDR5 RAM. However, the Intel N200 also has to make do with single-channel RAM. This will likely only be changed with the new Meteor Lake processors.

Asus ExpertCenter PN42 vs. Cinebench R15 Multi Loop
The Cinebench R15 continuous loop gives us our first insight into how well the installed cooling unit performs under permanent load. As stated in its specs, the SoC can run at up to 25 watts. Taking a look at the telemetry data, it becomes clear that the Intel N200 SoC's power limit only reached 16 watts at the beginning of the test. At the same time, its temperature skyrocketed, preventing it from using a higher power limit for any longer. With an average of 6 watts, the SoC struggled through the 50 Cinebench R15 loops.
System performance
The device's limited CPU performance is reflected in its system performance results during Crossmark. At the same time, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 did pretty well during the AIDA64 tests with regards to its RAM performance.

DPC latency
When it comes to latencies, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 has some clear problems. Opening multiple tabs in Edge still posed no issues for the mini PC. However, when playing back our 4K test video, its latencies quickly rose. The Intel N200 seems to be the bottleneck and cannot play the video smoothly.

Storage devices
As we only got our hands on a barebone version of the Asus ExpertCenter PN42, we had to use an SSD from our inventory. We decided on a 2-TB Kingston SKC3000 SSD. Unfortunately, the PCIe-4.0. SSD cannot be used to its full potential inside the Asus ExpertCenter PN42, as it only supports PCIe-3.0 SSDs. Our documented transfer rates lay quite far below what the SSD should be capable of delivering. On the other hand, you shouldn't be able to notice much of this in everyday use, as the SSD does still deliver good values at the end of the day. The Asus ExpertCenter PN42 can only be equipped with one NVMe SSD.

Graphics card
The Intel N200 processor's Intel UHD Graphics is a simple iGPU with 32 EUs. In direct comparison with the competition, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 can keep up a lot better in this respect. Asus could definitely have squeezed out a bit more performance from the iGPU with the use of DDR5. Still, in practical use, you probably wouldn't notice any added advantage.

Gaming performance
The Intel UHD Graphics's low 3D performance won't be enough to run 3D games. We only achieved playable frame rates when running older games using the lowest resolution. The Asus ExpertCenter PN42 is only suited to casual gaming or playing browser games. If you need a lot more 3D performance, then you might want to take a look at the Minisforum EliteMini UM780 XTX.

Temperature
As a result of its passive cooling, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42's case gets hotter than on other mini PC featuring an active cooling unit. The Intel N200 hit 99 °C quite quickly during our stress test, which resulted in its performance being throttled. After a short peak of 14 watts, the processor's power consumption sank to 6 watts, complying with its PL 1 (Power Limit). The temperatures then sank and evened out at 71 °C.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 43.7 °C / 111 F, compared to the average of 35.5 °C / 96 F, ranging from 26 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 47.2 °C / 117 F, compared to the average of 36.9 °C / 98 F
(±) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 34.3 °C / 94 F, compared to the device average of 32.2 °C / 90 F.
Power consumption
The Asus ExpertCenter PN42 is very frugal, resulting from the SoC's low power delivery. In idle mode, the mini PC doesn't need any more than ten watts. This is similar to a lot of other devices, with the exception of the Acemagic S1. We noted peaks of just over 30 watts. However, its maximum usage was only achieved for a very short amount of time. Under permanent load, the power supply only has to deliver 14.6 watts in our scenario. At 65 watts, the PC's power supply is sufficiently sized. It should also be noted that Asus doesn't use a proprietary power supply.

Verdict - A good SoC with weak cooling
Asus' ExpertCenter PN42 is a good mini PC if you purely take into account its specs. In general, we welcome the use of an Intel N200 as a base in combination with DDR4 RAM. Our test showed, however, that due to its passive cooling, the SoC only has access to limited performance. In principle, the Intel N200 is able to deliver the performance specified by its PL1. At the same time, most of the comparison devices in this review can deliver better performance using an Intel N100 or an Intel N95, as they achieve a permanently higher turbo.
We don't have anything negative to say about our test device's build. Despite its reliance on plastic, the device feels quite high-quality. The Asus ExpertCenter PN42 offers a good number of connectivity options. You additionally have the option to use an analogue display. This makes the mini PC an interesting choice and as a result, it can set itself apart from the masses. Its good WLAN performance is worthy of praise — it outperformed all of its competitors in this review.
With its Intel N200, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 offers a modern SoC which, due to its installed cooling, remains considerably behind our expectations.
All-in-all, the Asus ExpertCenter PN42 was only able to assert its strengths in a few individual tests. Its passive cooling is surely a good start. At the same time, it is also the reason behind its comparatively poor CPU benchmark result. An active cooling unit would likely have been the better choice in this case in order to make better use of the processor's performance.
