Newsmay AC8F-POE review: A mini PC with PoE support and Intel N100 for professional environments

Newsmay is a Chinese system manufacturer that specializes in the production of special PCs. With the Newsmay AC8F-POE, we are dealing with a mini PC for industrial use that can be either used as a firewall or mobile router. The fanless concept is reflected in its visual appearance and is the reason why, from a visual point of view, the Newsmay AC8F-POE differentiates itself from most other mini PCs. With the Intel N100, the Newsmay AC8F-POE has been fitted with an already widely adopted SoC which, for a long time, has scored well as an economical and performant chip in many tests. The RAM comes in at 16 GB and mass storage is provided by a small 128 GB SSD.
At the time of reviewing, the device currently changes hands for $295 and, in the meantime, it can be ordered on Amazon. In addition to our review specs, Newsmay also offers the AC8F-POE with two other processors. Here you can choose from either an Intel N95 or an Intel N97. To illustrate the performance of other mini PCs, in this review, the Newsmay AC8F-POE will have to prove itself against similarly performant devices. A list of the competitors can be found in the following table.

Case - A sturdy metal case serves as a cooling element
The Newsmay AC8F-POE's cooling concept is initially responsible for the mini PC's looks. Since the manufacturer has opted for passive cooling, the case is also used to dissipate heat. We can already reveal that, in practice, this works wonderfully well. The case consists completely of metal and can be taken apart comparably easily. On the top of the unit and at the sides, large cooling vents have been fitted to emit the heat over a large area. One disadvantage of this concept is the weight, with the review sample tipping the scales at a more than decent 1.2 kilograms. The Newsmay also takes up more space than the competition. The fit and finish are good and everything fits together harmoniously. The only small point of criticism is the somewhat sharp-edged cooling fins.
Features
The Newsmay AC8F-POE offers a good selection of ports which meet their intended use. The first thing you notice is the many LAN ports which can serve as an interface to various networks. For example, LAN port 4 offers the option to provide the device with power and thereby makes the PSU unnecessary. Not many mini PCs have the PoE option and this gives the Newsmay AC8F-POE a unique selling point. However, we were unable to test this since we currently don’t have access to a PoE-capable switch. In addition to numerous USB ports - two of which only possess the 2.0 speed - the front is home to an HDMI port and a DisplayPort connector for transferring images. Likewise, there is a SIM card slot, although this device specification doesn’t come fitted with an internal 4G or 5G module. Both Wi-Fi antenna ports promise more than they deliver since a Wi-Fi module is also not installed in the Newsmay AC8F-POE. With this being the case, the next section covering communication is absent from this review. You can, however, fit the device with a Wi-Fi module.
Accessories
The mini PC comes in straightforward, unassuming packaging. Inside the box, you will find an HDMI cable together with the 35-watt PSU. The Newsmay AC8F-POE can also be attached to a VESA mount. A mounting plate with mounting material comes as part of the package. Likewise, two Wi-Fi antenna cables for attaching to the case are also included. However, there are no external Wi-Fi antennas. A connector cable for the optional 2.5-inch mass storage is already installed in the device.
Maintenance
The Newsmay AC8F-POE is sold with RAM and mass storage which means no upgrading work is required before using the device for the first time. However, the sturdy metal case can be easily opened on the base of the unit. Only four screws require unscrewing to dismantle the base plate. Fortunately, these are not covered by rubber feet which is the case with other manufacturers. In our case, it is possible to fit an additional 2.5-inch data storage device. Likewise, there is also a free slot for a Wi-Fi module. The passive design means there is no need to clean a fan. In the long term, this means there shouldn’t be a significant build-up of dust in the system itself.
Sustainability
Externally, the Newsmay AC8F-POE’s packaging appears neutral. However, the inside reveals that a lot of plastic has been used. Individually packaged cables are unnecessary and pollute the environment so there’s room for improvement in this area. The device itself does largely without plastic - and that’s good. However, we do not have any additional figures regarding the environmental footprint.
Performance - A passively cooled Intel N100 with four cores
In the meantime, the Intel N100 is a widely used SoC which has four native processing units and belongs to the Alder Lake series. The SoC was launched at the beginning of 2023 and is mostly found in budget devices. Due to its low power consumption, the processor is also suitable for passively cooled devices. The Newsmay AC8F-POE only has 8 GB of RAM which is a bit meagre when used in combination with the Windows operating system. However, this can be expanded at a later date.
Test conditions
We carried out all of the performance tests using the "Highest Performance" energy settings. Different energy-saving plans only came into play with the power consumption and noise measurements. Additional details concerning the test criteria are summarized here.
Processor
The Intel N100 is a quad-core processor with Alder Lake architecture. Identical to the N95 and N97 models, there are only marginal performances between the three models. These are precisely the three models Newsmay offers in the AC8F-POE. Nevertheless, you can see from the specifications that the processor’s performance differs when it comes to power consumption. The Intel N100 found in our review system possesses a PL1 of 10 watts. With the Intel N97, it is 12 watts, even though 15 watts are stated for the Intel N95. As a result, the two alternative SoCs achieve better multi-core performance. In the performance comparison, our review device finds itself in second last place. Only the similarly passively cooled Asus PN42 is worse. However, the gap to the other competitors which have active cooling is small and only in the single-digit percentage range.
Additional processor benchmarks can be found here.

Cinebench R15 Multi Continuous Test
Despite its fanless design, the Newsmay AC8F-POE handled the Cinebench R15 continuous loop wonderfully well. However, you have to do without constant turbo use which means that the Intel N100’s performance will remain mostly stable. With a maximum temperature of just 65 °C, at no point does the SoC reach critical values and this results in performance that is almost similar to some actively cooled models.
System performance
The system performance is influenced significantly by the CPU performance and the RAM. The latter comes up a little short at 8 GB and this is sometimes highlighted in everyday situations. You shouldn’t, therefore, expect the Newsmay AC8F-POE to be able to handle too many simultaneous demands. Taking that into account, the system works well. Nevertheless, our recommendation is to opt directly for a 16 GB RAM module to have sufficient resources up your sleeve.

Mass storage
The installed SSD is a straightforward M.2 SSD running at SATA speed. Accordingly, the AirDisk model only delivers low transfer speeds and is inferior to all of the other competing models listed here. Despite this, the SSD copes well with everyday use. With only 128 GB, the preinstalled model doesn’t offer much storage space. Subracting the Windows installation might only leave you with 96 GB at your disposal but you can still install a second storage device. The optional 2.5-inch storage’s cable connector is already installed in the device.

Graphics card
The Intel N100 only has a simple iGPU that carries the name Intel UHD Graphics. The iGPU is only equipped with 24 EUs and only delivers low-level 3D performance. Compared to the competition, the Newsmay AC8F-POE displays similar performance without standing out as overly negative or positive. With its Intel N97, only the Acemagic S1 achieves a significant lead due to its higher power limits. However, we are miles off useable gaming performance.

Temperature
In our review device, the case temperatures are mostly a little higher than the competition due to its cooling concept. The heat distribution works exceptionally well and there is no discernible direct hotspot. It is visible in the images in the area of the contact surface with the processor. With a peak of only 59 °C, the Intel N100 remains comparably cool, especially when you consider Intel’s thermal limit for this SoC is stated as 105 °C. Over a longer period of time, the manufacturer has managed to ensure stable performance at 10 watts. For a short period, the SoC hit 21 watts which isn’t entirely in accordance with the defined PL2.
Regarding the case temperatures, it’s worth noting that they are very dependent on the choice of location for the device. A well-ventilated location will ensure comparatively low surface temperatures. We recorded the temperatures in an air conditioned room at an ambient temperature of 20 to 21 °C.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 42.2 °C / 108 F, compared to the average of 35.8 °C / 96 F, ranging from 21.6 to 69.5 °C for the class Mini PC.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39.9 °C / 104 F, compared to the average of 36.1 °C / 97 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 30.6 °C / 87 F, compared to the device average of 32.3 °C / 90 F.
Energy management
The Newsmay AC8F-POE’s energy management can follow two paths. One way is to use the supplied 36-watt PSU although, alternatively, if the network structure is available, PoE (802.3 bt/at) can also be used. In the comparison, our review device used somewhat more power than any device except the Acemagic S1 but this is still acceptable. The Newsmay doesn’t make any significant missteps in this area. The supplied PSU delivers sufficient power at all times and, in the testing period, we didn’t encounter any problems concerning the power supply.

Verdict - A special mini PC for special tasks
The Newsmay AC8F-POE is certainly not a classic mini PC for everyday office use, even though the device basically comes equipped with similar hardware components as its competitors. The Intel N100 here is definitely a good choice even if the SoC celebrated its debut over one year ago. In our review, the passively cooled SoC delivers solid performance. The cooling unit copes exceptionally well with the low power consumption and, thermally, the Newsmay AC8F-POE never has any problems. In terms of the ports, visually, it becomes clear that the Newsmay AC8F-POE is a mini PC designed for special use cases. Many 2.5G LAN ports offer the possibility of being able to manage various networks simultaneously meaning the device can be used as a firewall. In combination with a mobile data connection, the computer can also be used as a mobile router. However, this requires additional hardware since a 4G or 5G module is not on board.
The Newsmay AC8F-POE offers many possibilities not covered by other mini PCs. Being able to supply power via LAN is one of the biggest advantages over alternative mini PCs.
Since the Newsmay AC8F-POE primarily uses a small Linux distribution, the size of the RAM and mass storage is put into perspective. Compared to Windows, specially adapted Linux versions go a little easier on the hardware and require fewer resources. The 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage in the system provided to us as a basis, is simply insufficient. Luckily, these key components are not fixed installations and can be quickly swapped or expanded.
The solid, industrial-look case is well crafted and is also an impressive, passive cooling element. For this reason, Newsmay could have made more performance available to the Intel N100. With 15 watts of sustained power, you would get a touch more performance without getting too annoyed at a significantly louder cooling unit. The Newsmay AC8F-POE's sturdy cooling element certainly has enough in the way of performance reserves.
Price and availability
The Newsmay AC8F-POE is listed on Amazon. If you plan on importing the device to the EU, additional taxes will add considerably to the overall cost of the device.
