With DDR5 RAM prices inflated, buyers have turned to previous-generation memory for relief. While also now more expensive, some PC builders are willing to compromise on performance. As reported by DigiTimes, Samsung has decided to continue manufacturing DDR4 RAM into 2026. Sadly, a new agreement is unlikely to lead to lower memory costs or a greater supply for consumers.
According to the Taiwanese website, sales for the older components remain high. As a result, Samsung has changed its plans in order to maximize profits. However, as with specialized DDR5 chips, the focus is on enterprise customers and servers. The company has reportedly already signed a Non-Cancellable, Non-Returnable (NCNR) contract with one party.
The deal secures a steady supply of DDR4 RAM for the customer at a set price. Samsung is also immune to any changes in market conditions, alleviating concerns that demand from AI data centers will drop. Unfortunately, Samsung does not intend to address the memory shortage by ramping up production.
Another major force in the industry, SK Hynix, will also keep making DDR4 RAM in its factories. Even so, desperate buyers should anticipate prices to remain at record levels. Nevertheless, gaming PCs with slightly outdated configurations could enjoy a return to glory.
How the DDR4 resurgence is reshaping PC builds
One positive is that Intel 12th-14th generation CPUs work with motherboards that support the last-gen parts. Some gamers may be scouring marketplaces for used gear. However, companies are also responding to the predicament by introducing new products. ASRock recently unveiled its H610M Combo micro-ATX motherboard, which welcomes both DDR4 and DDR5 memory.
Not all industry sources view the memory shortage as a long-term problem. Sapphire PR manager Edward Crisler urged gamers not to panic-buy. In The Hardware Unboxed Podcast, he predicted that consumers could see prices level off in six months. Crisler also lauded the resourcefulness of gamers, who have survived past crises by maximizing aging hardware.
