The boom in the enterprise segment powering much of the progress in AI has caused DDR5 memory prices to skyrocket in the past few months. The data centers training the massive LLMs which we have now become familiar with have exorbitant memory requirements, thereby putting enormous pressure on DRAM supply chains.
DIY Framework Laptops set to be noticeably pricier
Framework has begun to feel the heat as well, and has found it best to pass some of the financial burden onto consumers. In a recent post, the company has stated that the ongoing surge in DRAM prices has made it necessary to raise prices for its DDR5 memory modules by 50%. In reality, prices of DRAM modules have more than doubled YoY, which makes Framework's hike appear reasonable.
Moreover, orders made prior to this announcement will be honoured, and prices for pre-built laptops and the Framework Desktop will remain the same as before, at least for now. Although prices are expected to continue climbing well into next year, Framework explicitly mentions that should prices return to saner levels, the pricing hike will be retracted.
End-users continue to suffer, as always
Interestingly, the blog post also puts into perspective just how memory intensive AI data centers are. For instance, the Nvidia GB300 itself utilizes a mind-boggling 20 TB of HBM3E and 17 TB of LPDDR5X memory. That is just one rack - an actual data center, such as the Microsoft-owned one which is set to open its doors in 2026 - will likely pack hundreds of thousands of these GB300 racks. That is quite literally enough memory for millions of laptops.
Further, Framework also mentioned updates to their return policy, which have been implemented to fight scalpers. It considers the updates necessary, in order to fight against scalpers who might take undue advantage of Framework's below-market memory prices. In other words, those who will buy Framework's DIY laptops along with memory, will no longer be able to return the laptop while retaining the memory.
Those looking to get a good deal on a powerful desktop or mini PC while they still can are definitely recommended to check out the GMKtec Evo-X1 with 32 GB of DDR5 memory on Amazon. The Ryzen AI HX 370-powered mini PC is once again available for an all-time low price of $800.
