Lenovo updated its premium business line-up of ThinkPad T-series laptops and after we have already reviewed the new 14-inch model ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 with an Intel Panther Lake processor, we are also testing the larger 16-inch version. Our review unit is the ThinkPad T16 Gen 5 22AN001WGE with the AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 215 (Zen 4, 6 cores, 12 threads), Radeon 740M GPU, 16 GB RAM (single-channel), 512 GB SSD, WWAN antennas as well as the familiar Full-HD screen in the low power version with full sRGB coverage for €1640. The internal layout in particular shows some differences compared to the previous Gen 4 model, which is also clearly shown in the pictures below.
The first thing you notice is the much smaller battery with a capacity of 65 Wh instead of 80 Wh before. Like on the smaller ThinkPad T14 Gen 7, you can now simply remove the battery without the removal of any additional screws, but Lenovo could have implemented a larger battery considering the free space. We will see how this change impacts the battery life in our full review soon.
While the Intel versions of the new ThinkPad-T-series use LPCAMM2 RAM modules, the AMD modules still use regular SO-DIMM modules. We will check if it actually makes sense to equip the Ryzen 5 PRO 215 including the Radeon 740M with a second memory module, or if a switch to Linux might be the better choice considering current memory price.
