Verdict: ThinkPad L16 G2 is great on the desk, not so great on the go
If you are looking for an affordable workhorse with a 16-inch screen, the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 AMD should be on your list. It has great input devices, is highly repairable and upgradeable with a wide port selection, and it runs cool and mostly quiet. The performance is good enough for office tasks, whether you choose the basic Zen4 configuration we tested or a more expensive Zen5 one. And with 32 GB RAM, the memory crisis is no worry for buyers of this Lenovo ThinkPad L16 G2, which starts at around €1,000, quite affordable.
The ThinkPad laptop has weaknesses in two areas: The screen and the battery life. Battery endurance is below average for an office laptop, and the screen is basically just OK for office usage, lacking in color quality especially. Both these factors make the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 a more ideal choice for a desk-bound laptop, tethered to an external screen and power source most of the time, with the battery and internal screen only being used sparingly.

Laptops for work may not be the most exciting for consumers, but they are some of the most reliable sellers for the PC manufacturers. For Lenovo, the ThinkPad L series is definitely one of these sellers, as the affordable enterprise line is attractive a huge number of business customers. The Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 is the largest model of the L series, with a 16-inch screen, and it is available both in AMD and Intel variants - we are testing the AMD model.
Specifications: Debut of the Ryzen 5 Pro 215
Case & Connectivity: Black plastic and USB 2.0 to lower the price
The Lenovo laptop has a typical boxy black ThinkPad design adapted for a lower price bracket. In this case, this results in the usage of a thicker plastic case, which is still robust, but less expensive to make. The plastic used for the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 AMD is mostly smooth, except for the rough-plastic screen bezel and bottom cover. While this can feel a bit cheap, the 16-inch L series variant is meant to stay on the desk anyway. The hinges of the laptop hold the screen mostly firm and they enable 180 degree opening, but it is not possible to lift the lid with just one hand.
Lenovo gives the ThinkPad a wide port selection, including both legacy and modern ports. Uniquely, the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 G2 has three USB-A ports, though one of them is sadly limited to USB 2.0. The only port the ThinkPad laptop is really missing is a SD card reader.
As a business device, Lenovo makes the ThinkPad L16 fairly easy to take apart and upgrade, with two SO-DIMM slots and a single M.2 2280 SSD. Plus, the keyboard is easily replaceable by the user. It is also 4G upgradeable.

Input Devices: ThinkPad laptop does not disappoint
As with all ThinkPad laptops, the keyboard is a strong point of the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 AMD. It has a good layout, a numpad for number crunching and nice typing feel. Likewise, the ThinkPad laptop has nice mouse input devices, with a good touchpad and great ThinkPad TrackPoint, the signature pointing stick of the ThinkPad brand.
Display: A weak point of the ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 AMD
Lenovo offers just a basic screen choice for the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 AMD - a matte 16-inch WUXGA IPS screen with 45 percent NTSC color gamut and 400 cd/m² of brightness. The only option is to have this panel with a touch function.
The panel is an improvement over the screen used in the predecessor ThinkPad L16 Gen 1, as it is much brighter with an average of 424 cd/m² instead of 322 cd/m². Still, this is not a good panel, which is made obvious by the bad color accuracy and color gamut. Certainly, this is not a screen you want to use for watching movies or editing pictures, but for simple office work, it is good enough. There is no PWM, and thanks to the matte surface and adequate brightness, the screen provides basic outdoor-viewability.

Performance: Ryzen 5 CPU coupled with 32 GB RAM
Instead of older Zen3+ CPUs like its predecessor, the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 offers a choice between various Zen4 and Zen5 CPUs, topping out at the AMD Ryzen AI 7 Pro 350. dGPUs are not available, as Lenovo purely relies on the iGPUs of the CPUs. RAM can be configured up to 64 GB thanks to two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots. And a single M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD handles storage.
Testing Conditions
The three power modes that influence the power consumption of the CPU are as follows:
- Best Battery Life: PL1 10 W / PL2 10 W
- Balanced: PL1 14 W / PL2 17.5 W
- Best Performance: PL1 22 W / PL2 30 W
Processor
The AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 215 is a six core CPU with 12 threads thanks to SMT. This Zen4 "Hawk Point" chip is the weakest six core CPU of the lineup, with clock rates of 3.2 to 4.7 GHz . Uniquely, it does not have any NPU. Further benchmark comparisons are possible with our CPU benchmark list.
In terms of performance, the ThinkPad ranks overall slightly better than its predecessor, despite the fact that this is just a six core version and the ThinkPad L16 G1 we tested contained a Ryzen 7 with eight cored. It is not a very fast CPU, but plenty capable for everyday use in an office.
When running on battery, performance drops by around eight percent, to 9273 points in the Cinebench R23 multicore test.

Storage Devices
The Kioxia 512 GB M.2 2280 SSD in the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 AMD is not very fast, but it certainly fast enough to not make the system feel slow. It also manages to keep its performance up under sustained load.

GPU Performance
Being a budget version of a budget laptop, graphics performance is not the strong suit of this Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 AMD. The AMD Radeon 740M is a weak iGPU that is just useful for very basic tasks. Only very old games are really playable. Of course for an office system, this is anything but priority.

Temperature
Even under load, most of the chassis of the Lenovo laptop barely gets hot. A maximum of 119 F or 48.6 degrees Celsius during the Cyberpunk 2077 test is not that concerning, especially as it is only one hot spot on the back of the bottom side.
There is no throttling under combined CPU and GPU load.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 37.3 °C / 99 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.5 °C / 112 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 22.9 °C / 73 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(+) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 27.4 °C / 81 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 21 °C / 69.8 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.5 °C / 81.5 F (+6.5 °C / 11.7 F).

Power Consumption
While it is not power hungry, the Lenovo ThinkPad L16 Gen 2 AMD is not among the most efficient models in our comparison. Especially the laptops with Zen5 consume less when idling, suggesting that maybe choosing a Zen5 variant would also make the L16 more efficient.
With a maximum power consumption of exactly 65 W, the charger of the ThinkPad laptop has exactly the right size.
