Verdict — Looks And Feels So Much Better Than Before
In our review of the Dell 14 Plus, we boasted its efficiency and relative affordability thanks to the Lunar Lake platform while criticizing its old design unchanged from the Inspiron days. For the Dell 14S, the manufacturer has updated the chassis with more metal materials for stronger first impressions and a higher-end feel than previous generation models. The newer design is arguably one of the top selling points of the Dell 14S as raw performance from the Core Ultra 7 355 is otherwise quite similar to the Lunar Lake Core Ultra 7 256V in last year's Dell 14 Plus. Users craving more performance will want to consider the Core Ultra X7 configurations.
To better distinguish the mainstream Dell 14S from costlier flagship models like the XPS 14, the Dell 14S comes with midrange display panels at best. For example, the OLED option is 60 Hz only and just half as bright as the OLED panel on the XPS 14 or even dimmer when compared to the Asus ExpertBook Ultra 14. While 120 Hz is available, the option is tied to an IPS panel meaning users must sacrifice image quality for the smoother refresh rate. Additionally, the model is one of the heavier 14-inch clamshells as competitors like the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Ultra 14IPH11 can be over 500 g lighter. Users who prioritize HDR support and portability may want to look into such alternatives.

Cons
Price and Availability
Dell is now shipping the 14S starting at $1420 for the Core 7 355 FHD IPS configuration.
The Dell 14S is the manufacturer's latest mid-range laptop and direct successor to last year's Dell 14 Plus. The chassis has been upgraded with stronger metal materials while sporting both a larger fan and battery pack than before.
Our test unit is a middle configuration with the Core Ultra 7 355 Panther Lake CPU and 1200p 60 Hz OLED touchscreen for approximately $1500. Pricier SKUs may ship with higher resolution IPS panels or the much faster Core Ultra X7 358H instead while lower-end options include the Core Ultra 5 322 and 1200p IPS non-touch display.
Alternatives to the Dell 14S include other midrange multimedia subnotebooks laptops like the Asus VivoBook S 14, HP OmniBook 7 series, or the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim series. A 16-inch version of this model is also available called the Dell 16S.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
| Screen flickering / PWM detected | 463.67 Hz Amplitude: 19 % | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 463.67 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 463.67 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 52 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 7726 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. | |||
