Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 14 review - An affordable multimedia laptop with plenty of power thanks to Zen 4
Good performance, weak display.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 14 is an affordable multimedia laptop with a fast AMD processor and good battery life. However, its matte IPS panel is only half as good.Andreas Osthoff, 👁 Andreas Osthoff (translated by Daisy Dickson) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict - The IdeaPad Slim 3 14 features an impressive Zen 4 SoC
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 14 is an affordable multimedia laptop that is particularly impressive thanks to its speedy AMD processor, decent maintenance options and good battery runtimes. It even has enough power for some games, but its fan is audible quite often. The device's RAM can be upgraded and it has a second SSD slot.
Its connectivity feels a little unbalanced, as on the one hand, it's fitted with a modern Wi-Fi 7 module, but its USB ports don't even support the USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard. Its display is also a weak point and as a result of its color space coverage and high color deviations, you can simply tell that it is a cheap IPS panel. And not a particularly bright one, either. Its weak speakers are another minus point.

Lenovo's IdeaPad Slim 3 is an inexpensive 14-inch laptop. Our test device with the model number 83K90004GE costs around $680 and features the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS including a Radeon 780M, 16 GB RAM, a 512 GB SSD and a matte IPS display. An operating system, on the other hand, is not included.
Specifications
Case & connectivity
Visually, the IdeaPad Slim 3 14's silver case makes a good impression and its aluminum display lid only adds to this. However, the base unit is just made from plastic and both the sides and the bottom cover have a roughened texture. Despite its rather thick base unit, it can be visibly twisted and the middle keyboard area also gives way pretty quickly. The lid did slightly better during our test, but here too we were able to provoke image errors with a lot of pressure. Given the price point, this is still okay, but the RedmiBook 14's aluminum unibody construction, for example, is clearly superior. The laptop's hinges are very tight (max. opening angle ~165 degrees) and the lid can't be opened with one hand.
Its maintenance options are good overall—there is a RAM slot and a free SSD slot (M.2-2242). The WLAN module and battery can also be replaced if necessary. When it comes to connections, you'll have to make do with the minimum and there is only one USB-C port. However, the laptop uses a proprietary charging port. Its 2 MP webcam doesn't take particularly good pictures, but Windows Studio Effects are supported and it has a mechanical shutter. Facial recognition is also supported. It is not a Copilot+ laptop, but live subtitling is available.
Lenovo hasn't skimped on the laptop's Wi-Fi module and has gone for a Wi-Fi 7 module (MediaTek MT7925), which boasted super high and stable transfer rates in our Wi-Fi test. It's also equipped with a full-fledged card reader with maximum transfer rates of ~90 MB/s.

Sustainability
The IdeaPad meets multiple environmental standards (e.g. EPEAT Gold, Energy Star), but Lenovo hasn't provided any information on the device's CO2 footprint or CO2 compensation. There is no information on the use of recycled materials for the laptop, but its packaging can be almost completely recycled.
Input devices - Backlit keyboard
The IdeaPad's keyboard is backlit and its layout doesn't raise any questions, but it only feels moderately comfortable to type on, as it is quite spongy. The clickpad (12.5 x 7 cm) is sufficiently large and feels nice and smooth, but our finger occasionally came to a standstill when making small movements. In the lower area, the pad can be clicked mechanically, but this is met with very cheap-sounding noises.
Display - Matte IPS panel at 60 Hz
Lenovo uses a matte IPS display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Its picture quality is okay, but you can clearly see that it is a cheap IPS panel with limited color space coverage, as the colors appear somewhat pale. Bright areas also look slightly grainy. No PWM is used and its response times are fine, but there is some visible backlight bleeding.
We only measured the advertised brightness of 300 cd/m² in the center of the screen, but the panel's average was just ~280 cd/m². Thanks to its low black level, its maximum contrast ratio of ~1,300:1 is at least good. However, the display's color deviations are very high and we couldn't get this under control even with our own calibration, but its grayscale display is better. Overall, together with the Asus ExpertBook, these are the weakest displays in the comparison group.

Performance - AMD Zen 4
Inside the IdeaPad, an AMD processor is combined with 8 GB of soldered-on RAM. It also features an SO-DIMM slot, which is occupied by a further 8 GB in our test device. As a result, its RAM can be upgraded. Lenovo specifies a maximum of 24 GB, but larger modules with 32 or 48 GB should also work.
Testing conditions
We carried out our benchmarks and measurements using Intelligent Cooling mode, which is active by default.
Processor - Ryzen 7 8845HS
The AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS processor uses eight Zen 4 cores (16 threads) with a maximum clock speed of 5.1 GHz. The chip can consume 33/27 watts inside the IdeaPad, which is why a U-series processor would have been sufficient here. Its multi-core performance is very good in the comparison field and, above all, completely stable; only in the single-core tests was the Core 5 220H (Raptor Lake Refresh) in the RedmiBook 14 slightly faster. In battery mode, the power limits are slightly lower at 25/22 watts, which affects its multi-core performance (-14 %). Further CPU benchmarks are available in our tech section.

Storage device
The IdeaPad features two fast PCIe 4.0 x4 slots for compact M.2-2242 SSDs. The 512 GB version of the Micron 2500 is installed in our test device, which achieved very high transfer rates during our test. However, its performance didn't remain stable under continuous load, but the effects of this should be limited during everyday use. Further SSD benchmarks are listed here.

Graphics card
The Radeon 780M is still a fast integrated graphics card that has no problems with everyday tasks, including playing back high-resolution videos. In the benchmarks, the IdeaPad was clearly ahead of the comparison devices and even its gaming performance wasn't bad. Older games in particular could often be played smoothly in 1080p resolution and medium details, especially as its gaming performance remained constant even during longer sessions. In battery mode, however, there was a minimal deficit (-4%).

Emissions & power
Noise emissions
One fan is responsible for cooling the laptop and despite its low power limits, it starts up quite quickly during everyday use and you can often hear a quiet hiss (~27 dB(A)). Under higher load, we measured between 38 dB(A) when gaming and a maximum of 40.8 dB(A) under high CPU load or our stress test. There were no other electronic noises on our test device.

Temperature
Its surface temperatures were very low overall during our test; under high load, there was only a very small hotspot on the underside (in the central upper area), where we measured more than 50 °C. However, the top of the base unit stayed very cool and there were no limitations during use. In the stress test with combined CPU/GPU load, the SoC quickly stabilized at 22 watts and remained stable at this level.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 38.3 °C / 101 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 51.5 °C / 125 F, compared to the average of 39.3 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.7 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 30.8 °C / 87 F.
(+) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 31.5 °C / 89 F, compared to the average of 30.8 °C / 87 F for the class Subnotebook.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 25.8 °C / 78.4 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.2 °C / 82.8 F (+2.4 °C / 4.4 F).

Power consumption
The IdeaPad Slim 3 14 is a very frugal device overall and its 65-watt power supply is completely sufficient even under load. The device naturally benefits from the screen's low brightness and the processor's moderate power limits.

Runtimes
Very good runtimes are possible thanks to its 60 Wh battery, and the IdeaPad was also able to place itself ahead of its competitors. In the WLAN test at 150 cd/m² (corresponds to 73% of our test device's maximum brightness), we measured 10:43 hours, and 09:10 hours at full brightness. In the video test at 150 cd/m², we even noted 14 hours. One full charge takes 129 minutes with the device switched on (80% after 85 minutes).
