Verdict — Strong Mainstream For The Right Price
The Dell 16S introduces a stronger and more mature chassis design over last year's Dell 16 Plus without needing to compromise on ports or serviceability. CPU and display options have improved as well to include 120 Hz OLED and, perhaps most notably, the Core Ultra X7 for the same level of graphics performance as the latest XPS 16. The updated design alone makes the new model worth considering over last year's model.
While starting prices for the Dell 16S are reasonable, it's worth noting that they can easily blow up to over $2000 USD to make the model more difficult to recommend at certain configuration levels. The Core Ultra 7 355 configuration, for example, starts at $1310 while simply bumping up the CPU to the Core Ultra X7 358H would increase the price significantly to $2120. Configuring the XPS 16 with the same CPU is only slightly more expensive at $2350 even with equal RAM and storage and a similar IPS display. Thus, users who desire the faster Core Ultra X7 may as well spend a little more for the superior XPS 16 experience whereas the Dell 16S is a much easier sell at the middle Core Ultra 7 configuration levels.
Pros
Cons
Price and Availability
Dell is now shipping the 16S starting at $1310 for the Core Ultra 7 FHD configuration.
Much like how the 14-inch Dell 14S succeeds the older Dell 14 Plus, the mainstream 16-inch Dell 16S is the successor to last year's Dell 16 Plus. The new model brings several updates especially in regards to the chassis design while updating the processor options from Intel Lunar Lake to both Panther Lake and AMD Zen 5.
Our test unit is a middle configuration with the Intel Core Ultra 7 355 CPU and 1800p OLED touchscreen for approximately $1700 USD. Other SKUs may ship with the more powerful Core Ultra X7 358H or come with lower resolution IPS displays instead.
Competitors include other midrange 16-inch multimedia clamshells like the Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5, HP OmniBook 5 series, or the Asus VivoBook S16 series.

The display backlight flickers at 957.41 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 957.41 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 52 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 7710 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. | |||

Notebookcheck Rating
The Dell 16S is stronger and more visually appealing than its Dell 16 Plus predecessor. However, higher configuration levels cost nearly the same as the XPS 16.
