Verdict — High-End Looks Without The High-End Price
Choosing an inexpensive Windows laptop often entails steep compromises including unappealing designs and poorer displays. The new XPS 13 directly addresses these concerns to easily be one of the best-looking 13-inch Windows laptops in the sub $1000 category. The model feels and looks more expensive than it actually is to effortless surpass immediate rivals like the HP Pavilion or Lenovo IdeaPad that generally don't put as much attention to their designs in order to bolster their more attractive pricier alternatives. The display on the Dell is genuinely surprising as you're not going to find a 2.5K touchscreen with full P3 colors of this quality on any other laptop for under $700.
Arguably the two biggest compromises for the new XPS 13 relate to performance and chassis rigidity. The low-power Core 5 320 CPU and limited 8 GB of RAM struggle when running most applications outside of browsers, word processors, or spreadsheets. We recommend considering the 16 GB configuration for longer legs which thankfully still puts the model under $1000. The new design, while still lighter and better than most any other Windows PC for the price, feels more fragile than the traditionally solid XPS 13 design of old. Even so, the XPS 13 has never looked more desirable for basic student and multimedia needs.

Dell is currently shipping the XPS 13 as configured in this review for just $700.
In contrast to the XPS 14 and XPS 16, the 2026 XPS 13 has been redesigned from the ground up for a significantly lower starting price of just $699 or even $599 with education discounts. The move is especially notable as the XPS series has always been home to pricier prosumer models often retailing for 2x or 3x as much.
Our test unit is the most basic configuration with the Intel Wildcat Core 5 320 CPU and 8 GB of soldered RAM. Doubling the RAM increases the price by $200, but all SKUs at the moment ship with single-channel memory and the same 120 Hz 2560 x 1600 IPS touchscreen. The faster Core Ultra 7 355 option is expected on future configurations.
The Intel Wildcat XPS 13 was designed to be the Windows alternative to the all-popular MacBook Neo. Other competitors include budget-oriented models like the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 series, HP Pavilion series, and other budget-conscious laptops retailing for under $1000.

Case
The 2026 XPS 13 is even thinner and lighter than the 2024 XPS 13. When closed, it looks like a miniature version of the recent XPS 16 redesign. Older and heavier XPS 13 models are nonetheless less susceptible to bending than this latest iteration and so the shrinking size and weight has arguably impacted rigidity.

Sustainability
The chassis features up to 75 percent recycled aluminum for the top cover and palm rests, up to 50 percent recycled cobalt for the battery, and up to 90 percent recycled steel for the keycaps. The packaging is fully recyclable and free of plastics.
Input Devices
The more traditional keyboard is arguably easier to type on than the zero-lattice keyboard of the larger XPS 14. However, while feedback is sharp, travel is very shallow especially in regards to the Space key.
Display
Dell did not cheap out on the touchscreen despite the low overall price. In fact, this is one of the best displays on any 13-inch subnotebook retailing for well under $1000. Colors are calibrated and vibrant at >95% P3, contrast is high for IPS at ~2000:1, and brightness is great at over 500 nits. Its weak HDR support and slow black-white response times should matter little to the target audience of office users and students.

Processor Performance
Raw multi-thread performance from the Core 5 320 is only slightly faster than the five-year old Core i7-1185G7. Upgrading to the Core Ultra 7 355 may be worthwhile for heavier multitaskers as it would significantly boost multi-thread performance by over 80 percent.

GPU Performance
The integrated Graphics 2 Xe3 is slightly slower than the Iris Xe 96 EUs that was prevalent on most Ultrabooks in early 2020. Needless to say, it is designed more for 4K video playback than actual gaming or graphics acceleration.
Some titles would fail to launch including F1 24, Strange Brigade and Cyberpunk 2077 under certain settings likely due to tight RAM limitations. Thus, these datasets are not included below.

System Noise
The system is quieter than previous generation XPS 13 models to correlate with the slower overall performance of the Wildcat CPU. Fan noise only becomes noticeable when running more demanding loads beyond web browsing or video streaming.
