Lenovo ThinkPad L13 2-in-1 G5 review - A business 2-in-1 with a matte touchscreen

With the ThinkPad L13 2-in-1, Lenovo is offering a compact business 2-in-1 equipped with a matte touchscreen. The accompanying stylus is easily stored inside the case.Andreas Osthoff, 👁 Andreas Osthoff (translated by Andrew Dickson) Published 🇩🇪 🇫🇷 ...
Verdict - The ThinkPad 2-in-1 has better stamina
The ThinkPad L13 2-in-1 G5 is a compact business 2-in-1 with a good feature set, built-in stylus, and a matte touchscreen. It offers accurate colors and full sRGB coverage, but suffers from grainy image quality. The Meteor Lake processor is sufficient for office applications, and our review unit's storage configuration is already very good with its 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. However, the RAM cannot be expanded.
The input devices are comfortable, a WWAN module can be retrofitted, and the stylus is conveniently stored and simultaneously charged inside the case. Battery life is significantly better than before, even though the battery is still quite small. The stability of the base unit (made entirely of plastic) is the first thing that makes it clear the ThinkPad is an entry-level 2-in-1.
Pros
Cons
The ThinkPad L13 2-in-1 is a comparatively affordable business 2-in-1 powered by fifth-generation Intel Meteor Lake-U processors. Our review unit has a Core Ultra 5 125U processor, 32 GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and a matte Full HD touchscreen, priced at around $1,099 (without an operating system). In Lenovo's online store, the L13 2-in-1 costs around $1,400 in a comparable configuration. The laptop can also be ordered directly with Ubuntu Linux.
Specifications
Case & features
The chassis is effectively identical to its predecessor, meaning the compact black ThinkPad still lacks a camera bump. The lid is made from aluminum, while the base unit is still constructed using fiberglass-reinforced plastic. Stability is generally acceptable but falls short of more expensive ThinkPads with metal struts, especially when subjected to torsion tests. The lid performs better, but it is quite susceptible to dirt. As a 2-in-1, the screen can be folded entirely, and the hinges are sufficiently tight. All major ports, including Thunderbolt 4, are available, and the laptop can be charged on both sides.
The internal layout remains almost identical to the old model, although it now features a standard M.2 2280 SSD. Our review unit is WWAN-ready, which means the required antennas for a cellular modem are already installed, and a SIM card slot is also available. The Intel Wi-Fi module (AX211) supports the Wi-Fi 6E standard and achieved very good and stable transfer rates in our tests using the Asus reference router.
A 1080p webcam with a mechanical shutter is built into the top edge of the screen and also supports Windows Studio effects. However, the quality can only be described as average. There's also an autofocus 5 MP camera above the keyboard, which can be used in tablet mode. An IR sensor for facial recognition is also available. This isn't a Copilot+ laptop, but live subtitles are supported.

Sustainability
The ThinkPad L13 2-in-1 G5 meets several environmental standards, but Lenovo has not disclosed the percentage of recycled materials used or its carbon footprint. The packaging is fully recyclable.
Input devices - An integrated stylus
The input devices have been carried over and remain unchanged. We consider the lack of a Copilot button to be a plus. Overall, the backlit keyboard (1.5 mm travel) is very comfortable, but the more expensive ThinkPad models still enjoy an advantage here. Operation with the TrackPoint and touchpad also works smoothly, and both the solid mechanics and their high-quality, muffled clicks are also pleasing.
A capacitive touchscreen is also on board for inputs, and this is where the active stylus comes into play. It's housed and also charged in the front right-hand side of the case. The Wacom pressure-level digitizer is very thin, and the flat keys are difficult to use, but it's perfectly adequate for occasional note-taking.
Display - A matte IPS touchscreen
In addition to the 300 nit anti-glare IPS display (which we also reviewed in the old model), Lenovo also offers a matte IPS screen with a higher brightness of 400 cd/m², which is fitted in the current review device. The resolution is 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, and the aspect ratio is 16:10. However, the major problem is the very grainy images, which are particularly noticeable when viewing bright content. Nevertheless, the colors are vibrant, and there is no PWM flickering. However, the 60 Hz screen's response times are quite slow, and there is visible ghosting, for example, with pointer movements.
The advertised brightness of 400 cd/m² is only achieved in the center of the screen, but on average, it only reaches 366 cd/m². Thanks to the good black level, the maximum contrast ratio is still good. The factory calibration achieved decent scores in our analysis with the professional CalMAN software. The color deviations are small, and there is only minimal color casting. Using our calibration (the profile is available for free download in the box on the right-hand side), we were able to significantly improve the screen, and thanks to the complete sRGB coverage, image editing is also possible without any problems. However, the maximum brightness is reduced again (~35 cd/m²).

Performance - Meteor Lake-U
Test conditions
As is typical with ThinkPads, Lenovo doesn't offer dedicated power profiles. Instead, the settings are directly linked to the standard Windows settings. We conducted the following benchmarks and measurements using the Best Performance mode.
Processor
The Core Ultra 5 125U belongs to Intel's Meteor Lake generation and only features two fast-performance cores, so its multi-core performance isn't particularly high. The processor's maximum power consumption is 42 watts, initially settling to 35 and later to 15 watts. It outperforms the previous AMD and Intel models, and its performance is sufficient for simple office tasks. Performance isn't further reduced when running on battery power.

Graphics card
The Meteor Lake-U processors are equipped with the weaker Arc Graphics with four cores whose performance is comparable to the older Iris Xe Graphics G7 found in the predecessor. The iGPU is perfectly adequate for everyday office use and high-resolution video playback, but it doesn't offer much performance headroom when gaming. However, GPU performance remained consistent both under extended load and on battery power.

Noise emissions
In everyday use, the fan kicks in relatively late, and only under full CPU load do the high power limits become noticeable. At a maximum of 38.6 dB(A), the new ThinkPad L13 is also somewhat louder than its predecessors. However, the noise isn't annoying, and the review model didn't emit any other electronic noises.
