The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is Lenovo's business flagship and the new Gen 14 model gets a new chassis as well as Intel's new Panther Lake mobile processors. The low-power IPS touchscreen offers an amazing battery runtime and with great input devices as well as optional 5G connectivity, this is a great business laptop.

Verdict - ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 is one of the best business laptops

The new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 is once again a very good business laptop and the switch to Intel's new Panther Lake mobile processors offers more CPU performance as well as longer battery runtimes. You can even get the high-end Core Ultra X chips for maximum CPU and GPU performance, but the standard iGPU should be sufficient for most business-related tasks. The default IPS touchscreen offers decent image quality, but only runs at 60 Hz. It is a low-power version though and helps the battery life, which is excellent at almost 24 hours in our Wi-Fi test and still 14 hours at full panel brightness. The factory calibration, however, is bad and we recommend calibrating it (or use our profile), even though it will reduce the maximum brightness noticeably. You can also get an OLED panel with 120 Hz, but it affects the battery runtime and the image is actually even a bit grainier compared to the IPS version.

This also brings us to the different chassis versions, because the thickness of the lid will vary depending on the screen (touchscreen models are slightly thicker) and OLED models also get a magnesium base unit instead of aluminum (IPS), which has a big effect on the weight. Our unit with the IPS touchscreen tips the scale at 1.14 kg and is therefore about 150 grams heavier than the OLED version (989 grams), which is a very noticeable difference. Here you have to decide whether you prefer the lighter chassis (OLED) or longer battery runtimes (IPS). We also have to mention the massive camera bump, which looks awful. 

Connectivity has improved with an additional Thunderbolt 4 port on the right side and you get all the modern features you want, including the option to add a 5G modem. Lenovo also updated the speakers and the result is excellent, not only for a business laptop. Memory is soldered, but all versions offer at least 32 GB and you can get up to 64 GB in combination with the powerful Core Ultra X chips. All in all, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 is once again a very good business laptop, but be aware of the differences depending on the selected screen option. We will add more information and test results about the matte OLED panel soon.

Lenovo uses a completely new chassis for the 14th generation of the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. The overall design language is very similar to before, but we do not like the bulky camera bump. There are also differences depending on the display you select. SKUs without the touchscreen are slightly slimmer and also lighter due to the material. But there are more differences, because the IPS model gets an aluminum base unit, while OLED models get a magnesium base unit (lid always made of carbon fiber). This means there are three different chassis variants that also affect the weight. Our IPS model tips the scale at 1.14 kg, while the OLED model is actually lighter than 1 kg. The stability is very good on both versions, but the OLED model feels a bit stiffer, which also results in a slightly better typing experience. The new keyboard layout (with letters in the middle) now features an integrated power button with fingerprint scanner in the upper right corner and the keyboard quality is pretty much identical to the previous model with 1.5 mm key travel (1.35 mm for G, H & B) and the illumination can now be activated automatically. The haptic touchpad is still an excellent choice, also for TrackPoint users. Maintenance options (access to internals is very easy) are limited to the M.2-2280 SSD as well as an optional WWAN module (4G or 5G, our unit is WWAN ready with pre-installed antennas).

Connectivity is very good and Lenovo added another Thunderbolt 4 port on the right side, so you can charge it from both sides. Lenovo uses a modern Wi-Fi 7 module from Intel and the transfer rates in combination with a corresponding Wi-Fi 7 router are excellent at more than 3-4 Gbps. The 5 MP webcam (with IR) does its job.

Our review unit of the ThinkPad x1 Carbon Gen 14 is equipped with the base display, a Full-HD IPS touchscreen (1920 x 1200 pixels, 16:10) with 60 Hz. The subjective image quality is decent with full sRGB coverage and all contents are sufficiently sharp, but bright contents appear slightly grainy (even though not as bad as on the optional OLED panel). There is no PWM flickering and the response times are still okay. 

Our analysis with the professional CalMAN software reveals an average brightness of 524 nits with a black value of 0.3, which results in a very good maximum contrast ratio of 1800:1. However, the image calibration is pretty bad with a distinct color cast towards green/blue and high deviations for the grayscale as well as the colors. Lenovo uses this setting to increase the brightness. Our own calibration improves the image quality significantly and you can even use the screen to edit images, but the maximum brightness drops by almost 100 nits, which is a lot. We would still recommend our calibration and the corresponding file can be downloaded for free in the box below.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

Performance

Lenovo offers the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 with Intel's new Panther Lake processors including the powerful Core Ultra X versions (with the Arc B390 iGPU) and up to 64 GB RAM.

Testing Conditions

Lenovo's own power profiles are synchronized with the Windows settings on ThinkPad models. We used the Best Performance setting for our benchmarks and measurements.

Processor Performance

The Core Ultra 5 325 (Panther Lake) offers 8 cores (4x Performance, 4x Efficiency) with a maximum clock of 4.5 GHz. It consumes 35 Watts under load and the CPU performance across all our benchmarks is slightly better compared to last year's model with the Lunar Lake Core Ultra 7 258V and also the Arrow Lake version with the Core Ultra 5 225U. It is capable enough for most office related tasks and Lenovo also offers the flagship Panther Lake models (like the Core Ultra X7 368H) if you need more CPU performance. On battery power, the maximum consumption is limited to 25 Watts, so the multi-core performance is ~16 % lower.

Our unit is only shipped with a 512 GB SSD from Samsung (387 GB free, PCIe 4.0), but it offers excellent and stable transfer rates. The slot also supports faster PCIe 5.0 SSDs and Lenovo offers faster drives when you configure it.

GPU and Gaming Performance

The Core Ultra 5 325 is equipped with the Intel Graphics iGPU with 4 Xe cores. The graphics performance is decent for an office laptop and ~30 % faster compared to the previous Arrow Lake iGPU, but also ~30 % slower compared to the old Lunar Lake Arc Graphics 140V. The gaming performance is very limited, but as mentioned before, Lenovo also offers CPUs with the powerful Arc B390 iGPU, which is more than twice as powerful.

The ThinkPad with the Core Ultra 5 325 is a very quiet system and you can usually not hear the fan with light workloads. If you really stress the CPU, you can expect up to 39 dB(A) in Best Performance mode, which is audible, but not disturbing. We measured up to 36 dB(A) in Balanced mode and only 29 dB(A) in Best Efficiency mode, so you pretty much always have a quiet system. We did not hear any electronic noises.

Temperature

The surface temperatures are very low overall and only a few spots at the rear warm up to more than 40 °C under load, which is completely unproblematic. The SoC consumes up to 57 Watts during the stress test for a short moment but then fluctuates between 30-40 Watts over the course of the test. This is not ideal and we would prefer a steady consumption.

Speakers

Lenovo improved the speaker performance and it is even better compared to the ThinkPad T14s Gen 7 we recently reviewed. It is also on par with the excellent sound system of the Asus ExpertBook Ultra and not just great for an office laptop.

Power Consumption and Battery Life

The X1 Carbon with the low-power IPS touchscreen is a very efficient system with a maximum idle consumption below 5 Watts. We measure up to 64 Watts under load, but this quickly drops to 45-55 Watts during the stress test, so the 65W power adapter is sufficient. 

The highlight is definitely the battery runtime, because we determined more than 23 hours in our Wi-Fi test at 150 nits, despite the comparatively small battery capacity of 58 Wh. At maximum brightness, the Wi-Fi test still runs for more than 14 hours, which easily beats all the rivals.
