Verdict: Stay with the Lunar lake version of the X1 Carbon Gen 13
When we reviewed the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 for the first time, there was a lot to love: Lower weight, a cooler running, longer lasting laptop and a great OLED screen. Unfortunately, many of these qualities are missing from the newest variation that we tested. With the Intel Arrow Lake U platform, a reheated refresh of last year's Meteor Lake, this X1 Carbon G13 feels more like an X1 Carbon Gen 12.5. It runs hotter, louder and the battery life is only mildly better than on the OLED screen equipped model, despite the much more power efficient, but also dull, IPS screen.
Even the weight significantly increases. On the plus side, users get the WWAN option in this case, and Arrow Lake supports 64 GB of RAM instead of just 32 GB. But, if you need neither of these features, never buy the Arrow Lake U version of the X1 Carbon over the one with Lunar Lake. It is just not the same user experience.

One year ago, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 brought back the thunder to Lenovo's X1 Carbon series. With an OLED screen, an even more lightweight design and a very efficient Intel Lunar Lake processor, the premium thin and light ThinkPad reestablished the X1 Carbon as the most desirable ThinkPad model, after a few years of more disappointing iterations. Of course, this version of the X1 Carbon G13 is not the only that exists - there also are models with Intel Arrow Lake and IPS screen, which is what we are reviewing here.
Specifications: Intel Arrow Lake U and Low Power IPS
Case: This ThinkPad X1 Carbon uses more aluminum
While identical from the outside to the earlier version of the X1 Carbon G13 we tested, there are a few key differences. One of them is the chassis: This Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13 swaps out the Magnesium bottom cover for an Aluminum one. Advantage: This enables WWAN, this review sample has 5G antennas prepared. Disadvantage: The weight is noticeably higher. Whereas the first sample we tested had a weight of just 982 g, this one puts 1.165 g on the scale.
Connectivity: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon G13 with optional 5G

Maintenance

Input Devices remain unchanged
Keyboard, touchpad and TrackPoint remain unchanged. In all respects, the X1 Carbon sports the best of the best for ThinkPads. Just the TrackPoint is not quite as good as on other models, due to the integrated TrackPoint buttons, but a version with mechanical mouse buttons is available.
Display: IPS screen instead of OLED on X1 Carbon Gen 13
In total, Lenovo offers six different 14-inch 16:10 screen options on the ThinkPad X1 Carbon G13:
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, Low Power
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, Low Power, Multitouch
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, matte, PrivacyGuard
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), OLED, 400 cd/m², 100 % DCI-P3, semi-glossy, 120 Hz, HDR
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), OLED, 500 cd/m², 100 % DCI-P3, semi-glossy, 120 Hz VRR, HDR
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), OLED, 500 cd/m², 100 % DCI-P3, semi-glossy, 120 Hz VRR, HDR, Multitouch
The average brightness of 491 cd/m² in our basic Low Power version is slightly below the promised value. It is a decent panel that outperforms the WUXGA screens of the competition in terms of brightness, but it is a slow panel, with long response times and just 60 Hz refresh rate. Of course, the OLED panel is much better, though maybe Lenovo could also offer a slightly better IPS panel than this one.

Performance: Arrow Lake delivers faster multicore performance
Testing Conditions
The energy profiles can be selected with the Windows settings. The profiles impact the power consumption of the CPU and thus metrics like performance, heat output and battery life by setting the power limits (PL1 = sustained power consumption, PL2 = maximum consumption):
- Best Battery Life: PL1 10 W / PL2 40 W
- Balanced: PL1 15 W / PL2 45 W
- Best Performance: PL1 35 W / PL2 45 W
For all our benchmarks, the "Best Performance" profile was used.
Processor
The Intel Core Ultra 5 225U is the most basic U series CPU of the Intel Arrow Lake series. The CPU is a refresh of the Core Ultra Series 1 "Meteor Lake", with two Redwood Cove P cores (up to 4.8 GHz), eight Crestmont E cores (up to 3.8 GHz) and two Crestmont Low-Power E cores (up to 2.4 GHz) - a total of 12 cores, with 14 threads, thanks to hyper threading on the two P cores. The typical TDP range of this CPU is 15 to 57 W. Our CPU list can be used to compare it with other processors.
The power limits are significantly higher on this Arrow Lake version compared to the Lunar Lake model. Thanks to a higher sustained power consumption of around 35 W, instead of 20 W, the 225U X1 is around 22 percent faster when it comes to multicore loads. However, this performance advantage does not extend to single core loads.
On battery power, the performance is a bit throttled, by around twelve percent (Cinebench R23: 10777 points).

Storage Devices
Lenovo uses a NVMe PCIe 5.0 SSD in the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13. However, this model of the ThinkPad limits the M.2 2280 Samsung PM9E1 (512 GB capacity) with PCIe 4.0 speed, since Arrow Lake U does not support the newer PCIe 5.0 standard. In everyday use, though, it is not something you will ever notice, as the SSD is still plenty fast.

GPU Performance
Graphics performance is clearly a weak point of the Arrow Lake platform. GPU performance is halved compared to the Lunar Lake laptops. The GPU is only suitable for basic tasks.

Temperature
Louder, and also hotter! The Arrow Lake U version of the ThinkPad laptop runs hotter than the Lunar Lake model. 47.2 degrees Celsius or 117 F above the keyboard, that is nearly five degrees more than on the other version.
During the stress test, the power consumption ranges between 20 and 35 W. There is no throttling, but the result clearly shows that the X1 Carbon is not able to keep the power limit at over 20 W for a long time.
(-) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 47.2 °C / 117 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(±) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 44.1 °C / 111 F, compared to the average of 39.3 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 24.3 °C / 76 F, compared to the device average of 30.8 °C / 87 F.
(+) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 31.1 °C / 88 F, compared to the average of 30.8 °C / 87 F for the class Subnotebook.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 27.6 °C / 81.7 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.2 °C / 82.8 F (+0.6 °C / 1.1 F).

Energy Management: Efficiency is worse without Lunar Lake
Power Consumption
While the IPS screen does help with keeping power consumption low, the results are not great - under load, the Lunar Lake version is clearly more power efficient, despite the OLED screen.
The power consumption reaches a maximum of 65.2 W, slightly more than the 65 W charger can deliver. Since the power consumption quickly drops off, the device is not at risk of losing charge during use.

Battery Life
14.1 hrs of battery life in the Wi-Fi web-surfing test (150 cd/m²) is not at all a bad result, just underwhelming. It is slightly better than the X1 Carbon Gen 13 OLED, despite the screen being much less of a power draw.
