Verdict: A premium laptop all-around
With the HP EliteBook X, HP makes the claim to the top of the enterprise laptop market. The end-product of that claim largely delivers. The HP EliteBook X G2i offers a very strong CPU performance in a thin and light chassis, one of the best keyboard we have recently tried, an great haptic touchpad and more exotic business features, like 5G. This magnesium-clad laptop also delivers a great battery life and strong speakers, for an all-around premium user experience. The fan does run loudly under load, but during everyday use, it is completely quiet. All around, this device is a strong choice for CPU heavy tasks and travelers.
The other, more exotic business feature is the greatest weakness of our review unit: HP's SureView screen delivers a high brightness, but the bad viewing-angle stability hurts the usability. Of course, for business customers, the value of the privacy screen is high, and HP has many other screen options that prioritize the quality and are more consumer-friendly. Just make sure to pick one of those when you buy the EliteBook X, unless you really need the ePrivacy functionality.

If you are a large business customer looking for the best of the best of business laptops, HP wants to sell you the HP EliteBook X. This is the top-of-the-line model of HP's business series EliteBook, a thin and light premium laptop made to compete with the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon and Dell Pro Premium. With the second generation, HP has released a new design that is unified across the range of different CPU options - AMD, Qualcomm and Intel are available. With this review, we are testing the Intel option, hence, our review unit is called the HP EliteBook X G2i 14.
Specifications: Panther Lake H-class chip
Case: HP turns to magnesium
While most EliteBook laptops of the past few generations have primarily used aluminum as the structural chassis material, the HP EliteBook X G2i uses magnesium, which is painted on the outside in a whiteish-silver tone. The black screen bezel is made out of plastic, which is the only part of the device besides the keyboard in a different color. The design is further accentuated by a special EliteBook X logo on the palmrest, the large speaker grills and the drop down hinges.
The overall quality of the HP laptop is great. There is barely any flex to this business laptop, only the middle of the screen cover can be depressed a bit. Also, the hinges are good, since they enable an opening angle of 177 degrees, single handed opening and do not allow any wobbling.
Compared to the first gen HP EliteBook X, this newer model is slightly smaller and less heavy, but also thicker. Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14, on the other hand, is still the reigning champion in terms of weight.
Connectivity: EliteBook X now with a user-removable keyboard
While HP has changed a lot about the EliteBook X, the ports are not among these changes. Compared with the older model, the port selection is unchanged.
Communication
HP uses an incredibly fast Wi-Fi 7 solution, the Intel B211 320 MHz, which does very well in our benchmarks. Optionally, the EliteBook includes a 5G solution as well - our review unit has it ex-factory.
Webcam
The 5 Mpix webcam of the HP EliteBook X G2i delivers a good performance, with a clear image and colors that are not too distorted.

Security
As an enterprise model, the EliteBook has an almost full array of security solutions - a lock slot, Fingerprint reader, IR camera and mechanical webcam cover are all included, plus the SureView ePrivacy panel. Not part of the package is a Smartcard reader, which is reserved for bigger EliteBook laptops.
Accessories
HP supplies a wall-mounted 65 W GaN USB-C charger, which is tiny and lightweight. No other accessories are included.
Maintenance
There are only four screws that hold the bottom cover in place, so accessing the internals is easy. Of course, there are some clips that have to be loosened with a spudger.
Since the RAM and Wi-Fi card are soldered, there is not a lot of upgrade potential here. The M.2 2280 SSD is modular, as is the WWAN card. Of course, the battery can be easily replaced, and the cooling system can be cleaned. New this year: The keyboard is much more easily user-replaceable, a move we definitely applaud.
Sustainability
The packaging of the HP EliteBook X G2i is entirely recycleable, and the product also contains recycled materials. In terms of CO2 emissions, HP advertises emissions of 283 kg/CO2e for the EliteBook X G2i for the European market. Plus, as a business device, you get parts support and software updates for a long time, as well as maintenance manuals available online.
Warranty
Our German review model of the HP laptop has a three year warranty, which includes on-site service.
Input Devices: One of the best keyboards in a laptop
Keyboard
One of the new features of the 2026 EliteBook X laptop is the redesigned keyboard, with a lattice-free design that is closer to classic PC keyboards than common Chiclet designs. It looks modern, but is much more usable than the Dell XPS lattice-free keyboard design. Plus, the keyboard backlight function is excellent, as the keycap design precents any light bleed beneath the keys.
Overall, we are highly impressed by this very comfortable keyboard. The smooth, dark-grey keys are spacious, with good feedback and long travel, and the layout is sensible. It is one of the best laptop keyboards we have tested recently. Only the cramped arrow keys design could be an area of possible improvement.
Touchpad
HP puts in a huge glass touchpad, with an area of 13.8 x 9 cm. To make it clickable everywhere, HP relies on haptic technology, and this touchpad works great. The click feel excudes quality, as does the glass surface, as expected. All things considered, the touchpad of the EliteBook X G2i is a strong contender for the title of best Windows touchpad.

The SureView privacy panel of our review unit is both a boon and a curse. It delivers a high screen brightness, but even when you disable the privacy mode, the viewing angles are very limited and the brightness decreases a lot when you move your head just a little from the optimal position. Also, the brightness is uneven, with the bottom of the screen barely delivering more than 500 cd/m², while the center of the screen shines with more than 800 cd/m². On paper, the screen is very bright, but in practice, unless you sit perfectly centered to it, it seems much dimmer. Of course, in return, the SureView privacy panel does protect your data when you do not want anyone besides you to see your screen content.

Ex-factory the panel is shifted a little too much towards a green tint. With a calibration, it is easy to correct this and the colors will be pretty accurate to the small sRGB color gamut. The color profile we created is available to download in the gray box above.
HP advertises the panel with 100 percent sRGB, we measure around 91.1 percent. For working with colors, this can be a problem, but at least the colors are more accurate than many cheaper IPS screens.

Performance: Strong CPU for a lightweight business model
HP offers the EliteBook X G2i laptop with various Intel Panther Lake CPUs, including the Intel Core 5 Ultra 325, Ultra 5 335, Ultra 7 356H, Ultra 7 366H and Ultra X7 358H. All CPU options, save for the Ultra X7 with the ARC B390 iGPU, include the basic Panther Lake Intel iGPU.
The RAM choices range from 16 to 64 GB of on-board LPDDR5X-9600 RAM. HP sells the EliteBook with up to 2 TB of SSD storage, which is delivered in form of a M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 5.0 SSD.

Processor Performance
The Intel Core Ultra 7 356H is a "Panther Lake" processor that has four big "Cougar Cove" P cores, eight "Darkmont" E cores and four Low Power E cores of the Darkmont-flavor, so a total of sixteen cores. The maximum clock-rate of this CPU reaches 4.7 GHz, the typical TDP rating for this CPU is 25, though it can be as low as 15 W and as high as 80 W. More comparisons with other CPUs are possible with our CPU benchmark list.
With this powerful CPU, the HP EliteBook X G2i easily beats its Lunar Lake equipped predecessor, but also the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 with the more basic Panther Lake variant. In the premium business class, this is one of the strongest performers thanks to the high TDP, and it matches AMD's Ryzen 9 HX 470.
We did not detect any throttling when the device ran on battery power.

Storage Devices
Our review device uses a fast NVMe PCIe 5.0 SSD with a capacity of 1 TB. This M.2 2280 drive was made by Kioxia, and it performs well in our benchmarks, with no throttling under sustained load either.

GPU Performance
While the EliteBook X G2i easily beats its predecessor on the CPU performance, the opposite is true when it comes to the GPU. Here, the basic Panther Lake iGPU loses against the older Intel ARC Graphics 140V. Of course, there is an optional configuration with the stronger ARC B390 available, and for a business laptop, a strong GPU is often not critical. If you want to use it for gaming after work, it can play basic, older titles with reduced details and resolution.

Emissions: Loud fan under load, but quiet otherwise
System Noise
Pulling a bit of a "Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde", the HP EliteBook X G2i is a laptop with two faces when it comes to noise: When idling, it stays completely silent. Under load, however, it emitts 47.5 dB(a), more than any of the other business laptops. This is clearly the compromise users have to accept for the high CPU performance.
We did not detect any coil whine.

Temperature
With the high performance, one could think the EliteBook would run hot. However, in our testing, it did not get to a critical point, as temperatures on the chassis barely rise above 40 degrees Celsius or 105 F.
During the one hour stress test, the HP laptop did not show any throttling behavior.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 40.3 °C / 105 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.

The power consumption of the HP business laptop is a bit higher than the earlier HP EliteBook X G1i. Considering the more powerful Panther Lake H platform, this is not a suprise.
HP supplies a small 65 W charger, which is just enough to cover the power consumption of the HP EliteBook X G2i.

An internal 68 Wh battery powers the HP EliteBook X G2i if the laptop is disconnected from the charger. The laptop managed over 18 hrs in the Wi-Fi/websurfing test (150 cd/m²), a good result, though not quite as good as the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14.
