Verdict - Zenbook S14 2026 is better and worse at the same time
The 2026 update of the Asus Zenbook S14 is an interesting update, but not all the changes are good. It is still a very sleek and lightweight 14-inch laptop with a great design, decent connectivity, comfortable input devices as well as a great sound system. The switch to the new Panther Lake CPUs pretty much doubles the CPU performance compared to the old Lunar Lake chip and slightly longer battery runtimes, but the graphics performance is actually a bit worse. This is a disappointment and we expected a premium system like the Zenbook S14 to feature the latest Core Ultra X CPUs with the fast Arc B390 graphics, but you only get the Core Ultra 386H with the slow iGPU.
The new Panther Lake chips also gets higher power limits and the overall fan noise is much louder than before. Yes, the Whisper mode is still pleasantly quiet all the time, but almost 50 dB(A) when you use the full CPU performance is pretty loud. The other problem is the new OLED screen. It is now much brighter (especially in HDR mode) and still offers 120 Hz with very accurate colors, but the image appears a bit grainy on bright surfaces due to the touchscreen layer. This is a common issue with touchscreen OLED panels, but some manufacturers do not have this issue (including Samsung's own devices, even though Asus uses a Samsung panel as well). The soldered RAM is another problem, even though 32 GB RAM should be sufficient for most users.
Considering the current price increases for laptops and the memory equipment with 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD, the list price of $1899 for the new Zenbook S14 is actually quite reasonable for what you get and compared to its rivals. If you do not care about the graphics performance, the new Zenbook S14 might be the right choice for you, but if you want the best Panther Lake iGPU right now, you will have to get one of the competitors.

Specifications
Case, Connectivity and Input Devices
Asus slightly changed the design of the new Zenbook S14 and the while the lid on the old model had had a large ProArt logo and a slightly different surface pattern, the new model now uses a lid with a small Zenbook logo and the color is now identical to the base unit. The chassis quality with its ceraluminum material is once again excellent and the Zenbook S14 is still a very slim and lightweight (1.2 kg) device that easily fits in every bag. The internal layout is pretty much the same as before despite the larger battery and you can replace the M.2-2280-SSD, but both the memory as well as the Wi-Fi module are soldered.
Connectivity has stayed the same with dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, a regular USB-A port as well as HDMI. The Wi-Fi 7 module from Intel manages excellent transfer rates north of 4 Gbps with a corresponding router, and the picture quality from the 1080p webcam is still decent in good lighting conditions.
We still like the input devices. The key travel is limited at just 1.1 mm, but the feedback is still very crisp and the overall typing experience is very comfortable. The mechanical clickpad still works very well, even though mechanical clicks are slightly on the loud side.

Display
Asus upgraded the OLED touchscreen. It still features the 2.8K resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate, but the brightness is now much higher than before. While the maximum SDR brightness is now 450 instead of 370 nits, the maximum HDR brightness is now 1,050 instead of 615 nits. The black value and the contrast ratio are excellent, just like the response times. The overall image quality is very good, but the image can appear a bit grainy on bright images due to the touch layer. We also detected PWM flickering at 960 Hz. Both the brightness and color temperature can be controlled via sensor.
There are different color profiles from Asus and our calibration with the professional CalMAN software reveals very accurate colors and grayscale performance, so image editing is no problem right out of the box. Both the sRGB and P3 color gamut are covered completely. We could not improve the color accuracy with our own calibration.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
| Screen flickering / PWM detected | 960 Hz Amplitude: 40 % | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 960 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 960 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. In comparison: 52 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 7747 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. | |||
Performance
Asus switched to Intel's Panther Lake CPUs, but there are currently no models with Core Ultra X SoCs and Arc B390 iGPUs.
Testing Conditions
Asus offers the typical power profiles, which are also synced to the Windows settings. For light everyday stuff, we recommend the Whisper mode so the fans are deactivated most of the time. We used Performance mode for our benchmarks and measurements.
| Profile | TDP | CB2024 Multi | Time Spy Graphics | max. fan noise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whisper | 35/12 Watts | 476 points | 1,991 points | 29 dB(A) |
| Standard | 57/17 Watts | 666 points | 2,745 points | 38.5 dB(A) |
| Performance | 57/28 Watts | 969 points | 3,048 points | 49.1 dB(A) |
| Battery | 57/28 Watts | 936 points | 2,998 points | 49.1 dB(A) |
Processor Performance
Asus uses the new Intel Core Ultra 9 386H (Panther Lake) with 4 performance cores and a total of 12 efficiency cores. The CPU can consume up to 57 Watts and then quickly levels off at 28 Watts under sustained workloads. The single-core performance is a bit better compared to the old Lunar Lake models, but the major advantage is the multi-core performance, which has basically doubled. The results are good for an everyday laptop, but also nothing special since it is only slightly superior to AMD's Zen 5 chips and overall still worse compared to Apple's fanless M5 SoC and easily beaten by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Elite in the Zenbook A14.

GPU and Gaming Performance
The Core Ultra 9 386H is only equipped with the Intel Graphics iGPU with 4 Xe cores, which is much slower than the high-end Arc B390 or B370 iGPUs. It is actually also slower than the old Lunar Lake Arc Graphics 140V from the previous Zenbook S14, which means the gaming performance in modern titles is also a bit worse. The iGPU is obviously sufficient for common tasks like video playback, but if you like to play games, we recommend you get one of the rivals with faster GPU options.

System Noise
The fan noise depends on the power profile you select and the fans will spin up quite quickly in Standard or Performance mode, so we recommend you use Whisper mode unless you really need the full performance. In Whisper mode, the maximum fan noise is just 28 dB(A), which is hardly audible, while it is really loud at up to 49 dB(A) in Performance mode. This means the new Zenbook S14 is also much louder compared to the old Lunar Lake model. We did not notice any other electronic noises.

Power Consumption and Battery Life
The new Zenbook S14 is even more efficient than its Lunar Lake predecessor while idling, despite the brighter OLED screen. Under maximum load, we can measure up to 87 Watts, which quickly levels off at ~48 Watts. Our German review unit was not shipped with a power adapter, but models outside of Europe are shipped with a 68W unit, which is insufficient. Due to the high power limit of the CPU, the consumption will always exceed the capabilities of the PSU in peak load scenarios, so the battery will be drained. This is not ideal.
The battery life benefits from the lower consumption as well as the larger 77 Wh battery (previously 72 Wh). At 150 nits, our Wi-Fi test runs for more than 16 hours and therefore about 2 hours longer than before. At maximum brightness, the runtime is almost identical at around 10 hours.

In our test labs, high-quality measuring equipment is utilized by experienced technicians and editors. These tests involve a multi-stage validation process. Our complex rating system is based on hundreds of well-founded measurements and benchmarks, which maintains objectivity.
