The new Asus Zenbook S 14 is Asus' new spearhead for compact laptops, and it is also the first model to feature Intel's brand-new Lunar Lake mobile processors. These take a new approach and are now much more focused on efficiency. Even so, power is certainly not to be neglected and Intel is advertising great leaps in performance with its new Arc-140V iGPU in particular.
Our test device is the Zenbook S 14 UX5406 with the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, the Intel Arc Graphics 140V, 32 GB of fast LPDDR5x-8533 RAM, a 1-TB SSD as well as a familiar 120-Hz OLED panel with a resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 pixels. This configuration retails for around US$1,499.99 with a touchscreen (gray or white), or you can get the version with the Core Ultra 7 256V, 16 GB RAM and no touchscreen (only white) for slightly cheaper. Further information about the new Lunar Lake mobile processors can be found in the corresponding analysis articles:
Update October 2nd: We added more benchmarks including Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro as well as games including XeSS.

Case - Ceraluminum
The new Zenbook S 14 is a super compact and slim 14-inch laptop with a state-of-the-art ceraluminum surface which we already know from the larger Zenbook S 16. The material is said to have combined the properties of aluminum and ceramic, making it particularly resistant to scratches. Our test device is the darker variant (Zumaia Gray), but you can also choose a lighter variant (the same as with the Zenbook S 16) in the colorway Scandinavian White. We like the design with the Asus logo on the lid a lot and in addition, its surfaces don't seem to attract many fingerprint marks.
The laptop's build quality and stability are impressive. The base unit only yields ever so slightly in the middle keyboard area, but this shouldn't be an issue during everyday use. Twisting attempts didn't faze the device and its lid is also very stable. Overall, the hinges have been adjusted well and enable you to open the laptop with one hand, although you can't prevent it from rocking slightly after adjusting the angle. Its maximum opening angle is 135 degrees.
Weighing in at 1.16 kg, the Zenbook S 14 is only beaten by the two competitors from Huawei/Honor, which are noticeably lighter at around ~1 kg. However, the MacBook Air 13 with its smaller 13.6-inch display is heavier, as are all other comparison devices. Overall, the Zenbook S 14 is additionally one of the most compact models in the comparison field and with a height of 13 mm at the rear, it is also very slim. The extremely compact 65-watt plug-in power supply weighs 190 grams with the cable included.
Connectivity - The Zenbook with Thunderbolt & Wi-Fi 7
The laptop's two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt), one regular USB-A connection and an HDMI output should be sufficient for everyday use, however, an additional charging port on the right side would've been practical. It doesn't have an SD card reader.
Communication
The Zenbook is equipped with the new BE201 module from Intel, which supports the new Wi-Fi 7 standard as well as Bluetooth 5.4. Using our reference router from Asus, its Wi-Fi 6 performance was very good and stable, reaching values around 1.6-1.8 Gbit/s. We additionally tested its Wi-Fi 7 performance within the 6 GHz network in combination with the Asus Rapture GT-BE98 router. In this scenario, its transfer rates in the receiving direction hit ~2.9 Gbit/s and when sending, we noted 3.8 Gbit/s. We never had any issues with signal quality during the course of our test.

Webcam
Asus has installed a 1080p webcam including an IR module for facial recognition via Windows Hello. The webcam supports the latest Studio Effects directly as part of the laptop's operating system and in good lighting conditions, it takes decent photos.
Maintenance
The bottom case cover is secured using several Torx screws (T5) and can be removed easily. The inside is dominated by the screwed-in battery and you'll also immediately notice how small the fans are. Asus has installed a regular M.2 2280 SSD that can be swapped out, whereas all the other components (RAM, WLAN) are soldered on.
Sustainability
The packaging of the Zenbook S 14 mostly consists of recyclable materials. However, the manufacturer hasn't provided any information on CO2 emissions produced during production. Service guides are not available and the laptop must be sent in for any repairs.
Input devices - Keyboard with 1.1-mm travel
Although the Zenbook S 14's keyboard features a comparatively low key travel of 1.1 mm, it feels extremely stable and the individual keys sit super tightly (no wobbling), creating a truly high-end feel. It's comfortable to type on this keyboard and its keys are nice and quiet—only the space bar gives off a louder noise when tapped. All-in-all, these are good input devices. The layout is clear, but it also isn't totally ideal seeing as how the Enter key only occupies a single line and the arrow keys are quite small. It features three-level backlighting that can be activated automatically. As we already saw on the larger Zenbook S 16, the backlighting has a bit of a blue tint and is almost too bright using the two higher settings.
At 12.7 x 7.9 cm, the touchpad is large enough in size and feels nice and smooth. We never had any problems operating it during our test and the additional edge gestures (scroll to change the brightness, volume, etc) also worked just fine, however, devices with haptic touchpads (e.g. Huawei, Honor) execute this feature even better. The bottom area of the pad can be clicked mechanically, but this produces a somewhat loud noise.
Display - 120 Hz Lumina OLED
The Zenbook S 14 is equipped with a familiar 14-inch OLED panel from Samsung. Its resolution is 2,880 x 1,800 pixels in a 16:10 aspect ratio and subjectively, the shiny panel's picture quality is impressive. All content looks extremely sharp, colors are vivid and its black value is super low. Thanks to its 120 Hz refresh rate, movements look really fluid and at the same time, its response times are lightning-fast. OLED panels don't suffer from backlight bleeding, but it does use PWM flickering at 480 Hz across all brightness levels. Thankfully, the amplitude is quite low and Asus additionally offers flicker-free OLED dimming via its MyAsus software. The brightness and color temperature can be adjusted automatically to ambient lighting conditions. Our test configuration doesn't have a touchscreen, by the way.
The panel's maximum brightness in SDR operation is around 380 cd/m² and we noted a maximum of 615 cd/m² in HDR mode. These are typical values for current Samsung panels, but the competition already offers more. The Matebook X Pro, for example, manages over 600 cd/m² in SDR mode (HDR: >900 cd/m²), and the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x as well as the Honor MagicBook Art are around 100 cd/m² brighter in SDR operation.

As usual, various color profiles are available in the MyAsus app, which we analyzed using the professional CalMAN software. The preset Native profile already offers accurate grayscale, but oversaturated colors. The Display P3 profile provides the most accurate colors and all deviations are already below the important limit of 3. We were unable to improve the display any further with our own calibration. An accurate sRGB mode is also available, so there are no restrictions for editing images/videos.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 480 Hz Amplitude: 26 % | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 480 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 480 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17204 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |
Outside, reflections on the shiny display quickly become an issue, especially on bright days. Its viewing-angle stability is excellent.
Performance - Lunar Lake & 32 GB RAM
As already mentioned further above, the new Zenbook S 14 is available with the Core Ultra 7 256V or the Core Ultra 7 258V, each alongside the Arc Graphics 140V. The new Lunar Lake CPUs can be combined with a maximum of 32 GB RAM (LPDDR5x-8533), which is the case with our test device.
Testing conditions
Four different fan profiles are available in the MyAsus app, which can also be conveniently switched through using the Fn+F key combination: whisper, standard, performance and full speed. We used the standard mode for the following benchmarks and measurements, as this offers the best compromise between performance and fan volume. Whisper mode should also be sufficient for most users during everyday use. However, the two more powerful profiles are still worthwhile, especially when gaming. More on that later.
Fan profile | CPU TDP | CB 2024 Multi | Time Spy Graphics | max. fan noise emissions |
---|---|---|---|---|
Whisper | 28/12 watts | 406 points | 2,955 points | 27.6 dB(A) |

Processor - Intel Core Ultra 7 258V
The Zenbook S 14 uses the new Intel Core Ultra 7 258V of the Lunar Lake generation, which we took a closer look at in our analysis article. In general, there have been some radical changes made compared to the previous Meteor Lake chips, as instead of 16 cores like on the Core Ultra 7 155H (6 P-cores, 10 E-cores), this model only features 4 performance and 4 efficiency cores without hyperthreading. Its maximum consumption in our test device is 37 watts, so it no longer has the absurdly high power limits that we know from the previous chips.
Reducing the cores has, of course, had an impact on its multi-core performance and in this respect, the new Lunar Lake chip doesn't impress. The old Meteor Lake chips were faster, which can also be said for the Zen 5 CPUs from AMD and the Snapdragon chips from Qualcomm. Even so, its single-core performance has improved and in this case, the Core Ultra 7 258V was able to set itself apart from most of the competitors. The Snapdragon X Elite chips were comparable in this instance, whereas Meteor Lake and StrixPoint trailed slightly behind. Apple's passively-cooled M3 SoC was faster in both cases.

Now, you may ask the question of how much power you really need, and for most users, all modern chips are theoretically fast enough. Moreover, you can benefit from its good single-core performance during everyday use. However, its efficiency analysis proved to be problematic because, surprisingly, the new Lunar Lake processor didn't perform particularly well in this case, falling behind the Apple M3 as well as all Snapdragon chips and AMD's Zen 5. Further efficiency measurements and performance comparisons at different power limits are available in our analysis article.

System performance
We noted no abnormalities surrounding its general system performance. As with all modern devices, it is a very responsive laptop and you'll also face no disadvantages compared to Snapdragon ARM laptops when waking it up from standby. Its performance in the synthetic benchmarks was fine and we had no problems with system stability during our test.

Adobe Photoshop & Premiere Pro Performance
Update October 2nd: We additionally compared its performance when running the two Adobe applications Photoshop and Premiere Pro using the PugetBench benchmarks. In the Premiere Pro test, the new Arc Graphics 140V (32 GB RAM) was on par with the Radeon 890M, although the 890M performed better when it came to Photoshop.
If you opt for the Core Ultra 7 256V, then the Arc Graphics 140V is only allocated 8 GB of RAM—this also had an impact on the laptop's performance in this case. We were unable to run the Photoshop test successfully on Schenker's Engineering Sample, but in the Premiere Pro test, its performance dropped to the level of the old Arc Graphics (8 Xe cores).
Test device | CPU | GPU | RAM | PugetBench Photoshop | PugetBench Premiere Pro |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Asus Zenbook S 14 | Core Ultra 2 258V | Arc Graphics 140V | 32 GB | 6998 points | 2984 points |
Schenker Lunar Lake Engineering Sample | Core Ultra 7 256V | Arc Graphics 140V | 16 GB | Benchmark error | 2086 points |

Storage device
A 1-TB version of the WD SN560 (M.2-2280) is installed in our test device. The PCIe 4.0 SSD doesn't set any records, but its transfer rates are decent and absolutely sufficient. Its performance also remains completely stable under prolonged load. In the laptop's delivered state, users have 895 GB free to use. Further SSD benchmarks are listed here.
