Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14 G9 laptop review: New smaller size with integrated Co-Pilot key

The popular Yoga Slim 7 14 (or just Slim 7 14 in North American markets) has been refreshed this year to include 1st gen Core Ultra CPU options and a slightly smaller display size. Whereas last year's Gen 8 models were 14.5-inch laptops, the 2024 Gen 9 models are now 14.0-inch instead while retaining the same 16:10 aspect ratio.
Our review unit has been configured with the Core Ultra 7 155H, 32 GB LPDDR5x-7467 MHz soldered RAM, and a glossy 1200p OLED 60 Hz touchscreen for approximately $1000 retail. Other SKUs include the Core Ultra 5 125H with half the RAM and no touchscreen, but the OLED panel and integrated graphics are fixed across all options.
Alternatives to the Yoga Slim 7 14 include other upper midrange 14-inch multimedia subnotebooks like the Asus ZenBook 14, HP Pavilion Plus 14, or Dell Inspiron 14.

Case — Plain But Smooth
Even though screen size has decreased from 14.5-inch to 14-inch, the chassis design remains visually the same as last year's Yoga Pro 7 14. The smooth aluminum alloy materials return which is hardly a complaint as we found last year's model to feel quite premium and sturdy. It's as if Lenovo simply took the 14.5-inch design and shrunk the dimensions on Photoshop without changing the size of the keyboard keys or original aspect ratio.
The screen size reduction has naturally led to a smaller footprint while weight remains about the same as before. The new model is therefore denser for slightly stronger first impressions. Lighter 14-inch subnotebooks include the Asus ZenBook 14 while the heavier alternatives like the Dell Inspiron 14 Plus 7420 have discrete GPU options.
Connectivity
Port options and positioning remain identical to the AMD-based 2023 Yoga Pro 7 14. The USB-C 4 ports officially support Thunderbolt 4 now since this is an Intel system.
We would have preferred one USB-C port along the left and right edges each for more freedom of charging instead of just two on the left edge. The Razer Blade 14, for example, splits its USB-C ports for arguably better port positioning.

Webcam
The webcam is only 2 MP compared to the 9 MP webcam on the pricier HP Spectre x360 14. Picture quality from the webcam is darker than expected despite using identical lighting conditions for our webcam tests.
Both IR and a digital webcam kill switch come standard.

Maintenance
Accessories And Warranty
There are no extras in the retail box other than the AC adapter and paperwork. The usual one-year limited warranty applies if purchased in the US.
Input Devices — Now With Microsoft Co-Pilot
Keyboard
New to the keyboard this year is the Co-Pilot key which replaces the Ctrl key on previous generation models. Microsoft and OEMs are going all in on AI whether users like it or not and a whole dedicated key to an AI assistant is just the beginning. Microsoft is expected to integrate Co-Pilot as a core function in future Windows updates. Until then, the new key is simply future-proofing the Yoga Slim 7 14 for when Co-Pilot has matured and can run locally.
Other than the new key, the backlit keyboard remains largely the same as before. The typing experience is still positive and quite close to the latest ThinkPad X1 Carbon models.
Touchpad
Clickpad size has been reduced from 13.5 x 8 cm to 12 x 7.5 cm for 17 percent less surface area than on last year's design. It's still spacious nonetheless and just as reliable for cursor control, but it suffers from the same loud clatter as last year's model when pressed which sounds cheap and hollow.
Display — Entry-Level OLED
The Yoga Slim 7 14 is one of the few 14-inch laptops with a 1200p OLED touchscreen. While it offers deep P3 colors and fast response times like every other OLED panel, the FHD+ resolution and 60 Hz refresh rate are more reflective of cheaper displays. Thus, the OLED panel on this Lenovo can be considered mid-range especially when compared to the 120 Hz 1800p OLED panel that's available on the HP Pavilion Plus 14. The Yoga Slim 7 14 offers no such options.
HDR500 is supported. We're able to measure a maximum brightness of 623 nits when HDR is enabled while regular SDR content is limited to about 388 nits.

Color accuracy is surprisingly decent even though the model is not pre-calibrated at factory. Average grayscale and color deltaE values are just 1.4 and 4.4, respectively, and so further calibration efforts would result in just minimal improvements. Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 489.7 Hz | ≤ 100 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 489.7 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 100 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 489.7 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8553 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
Outdoor visibility is only average due to the glare-heavy glossy overlay. The MacBook Pro 14 offers a much brighter >600-nit display for noticeably better visibility when under outdoor conditions.
Performance — 1st Gen Core Ultra Meteor Lake
Testing Conditions
We set Windows to Performance mode and Lenovo Vantage to Extreme Performance mode prior to running the benchmarks below. Owners should become familiar with Vantage as it is the hub for toggling performance profiles, BIOS updates, charging behavior, and other model-specific features.
Processor
The Core Ultra 7 155H offers minor performance boosts over the 12th gen Core i7-12700H or 13th gen Core i7-13700H by up to 10 to 15 percent. It's therefore roughly comparable to the Ryzen 7 7735HS as found on last year's Yoga Pro 7 14 Gen 8. While far from slow, users hoping for a big year-over-year CPU performance boost may be a bit disappointed.
Unique to the Meteor Lake-H CPU is its integrated NPU to accelerate certain AI tasks like Co-Pilot without relying on the cloud. Local support is extremely thin as of this writing, but this is expected to change in the future when more AI applications become commonplace.

Stress Test
The CPU would boost to 2.5 GHz, 49 W, and 90 C when initiating Prime95 stress. After about a minute, however, the CPU would drop slightly to ~2.2 GHz and 39 W in order to maintain a more manageable core temperature of 84 C. Running Witcher 3 to represent typical gaming loads would also cause the CPU to stabilize at around the 80 C mark. The temperature plateau is close to what we observed on last year's Yoga Slim 7 G8 and the Inspiron 14 Plus 7420 when under similar conditions.

System Performance
PCMark scores are within just a few percentage points of last year's AMD-powered models while being well ahead of other laptops powered by older 13th gen Core-U series CPUs like the HP Pavilion Plus 14. The latter can be attributed to the new integrated Arc 8 GPU which is a significant leap over the aging Iris Xe series.

Storage Devices
Our test unit ships with the 1 TB SK Hynix HFS001TEJ4X112N NVMe SSD. However, the short 42 mm length and lack of a heat spreader means the drive will throttle under stress. Running our DiskSpd stress test in a loop would result in steady transfer rates of ~4800 MB/s for just the first few minutes before performance begins to buckle as shown by the graph below. This limitation impacts only performance hunters as day-to-day browsing loads and occasional editing are unaffected.

GPU Performance — Intel Arc
Graphics performance from our integrated Arc 8 is 2x to 2.5x faster than the Iris Xe 96 EUs commonly found on Intel-based Ultrabooks from 2020 to 2023. The massive leap is enough to edge out the competing Radeon 780M in most games such as F1 22 and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Entry-level GeForce RTX GPUs are still much faster like the RTX 3050 or 4050, but the Lenovo model offers no discrete graphics.

Battery Power | 9148 (+2%) | 24012 (+3%) | 3479 (-0%) |
System performance across Performance mode, Balanced mode, and battery power varies only slightly as shown by our Fire Strike results table above. This suggests that performance is instead more affected by Turbo Boost limitations rather than power profiles.

System Noise
Fan noise characteristics are close to what we observed on last year's AMD-powered Yoga Pro 7 or Slim 7 series, if not slightly quieter. The system generally hovers between 28 to 31 dB(A) when running day-to-day tasks like web browsing or video streaming. Pulsing is kept to a minimum if on the Balanced power profile while the fans seem to run more liberally if on Performance mode.
Running more demanding loads like games would induce a constant fan noise of 42 dB(A) to be louder than on the HP Pavilion Plus 14 or Asus ZenBook 14.

Temperature
The palm rests and keyboard never become uncomfortably warm during use. Hot spots are very close to the rear where surface temperatures can reach 40 C, but skin contact on these areas is uncommon. Average temperatures are actually much cooler than what we recorded on last year's AMD-powered Yoga Slim 7 14 G8 where hot spots approached 44 to 55 C.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 32.2 °C / 90 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 39 °C / 102 F, compared to the average of 39.3 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 23 °C / 73 F, compared to the device average of 30.8 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 23.6 °C / 74.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(+) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.2 °C / 82.8 F (+4.6 °C / 8.3 F).

Energy Management
Power Consumption
Running Witcher 3 averages around 45 W compared to 61 W to 71 W on last year's AMD-powered Yoga Slim 7 14 models. Some of the extra power savings can be attributed to our smaller 14-inch screen size, but both raw performance and performance-per-watt are nonetheless still in Intel's favor if just slightly.
We're able to record a maximum draw of ~68 W from the small (~5.5 x 5.5 x 2.8 cm) 65 W USB-C AC adapter when running Prime95 stress. Consumption would fall just slightly a few seconds later to stabilize at 65 W. Expect the charging rate to slow significantly if running demanding loads as a result.

Battery Life
The 65 Wh battery is comparable to other 14-inch laptops if not just slightly smaller. Consequently, battery life is also slightly shorter by an hour or so when compared to last year's Yoga Pro 7 14 G8. The 8.5-hour WLAN runtime is still respectable nonetheless especially for an OLED system.
Charging from empty to full capacity takes about 90 minutes even with Rapid Charge enabled.

Verdict — Well-Rounded For $1000
At a time when laptop designs are becoming increasingly novel with inflated prices, it's nice to see a no-frills traditional clamshell like the Slim 7 14 in 2024. The model shows that you don't need chrome-cut edges and corners, brushed metal finishes, or flashy accent designs to be a good daily driver. The strong performance, comfortable keyboard, vibrant OLED panel, and dull chassis colors likely check off the right boxes for the vast majority of budget-conscious shoppers.
There's nothing very special about the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 14 G9, but there's nothing particularly bad about it, either. Instead, it nails the core fundamentals like good performance and chassis design without offering anything out of the ordinary to keep prices attractive.
Perhaps the "worst" aspect of the Slim 7 14 G9 is its 60 Hz 1200p OLED touchscreen when competing models like the Asus VivoBook 14X or HP Pavilion Plus 14 offer both faster refresh rates and higher resolution options. The 2 MP webcam could also be better now that 5 MP or higher are becoming commonplace. We suspect that many of these cutbacks are designed to meet the lucrative $1000 price ceiling.
