Schenker XMG Evo 14 (M24) laptop review - A good allrounder with a Ryzen 8000 and up to 96 GB RAM

Schenker's new XMG Evo 14 is a compact 14-inch laptop that aims to stand out from the crowd with its large variety of connections as well as good maintenance options. As a user, you have the choice between an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS (from approx. US$1,060) or an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H (from approx. US$1,223) along with their corresponding iGPUs. Our test device is the AMD variant with 32 GB RAM, a 1-TB SSD and Windows pre-installed, which can be purchased for around US$1,335. In addition, Schenker has published an extremely detailed deep-dive featuring all information surrounding the Evo 14 and Evo 15.
Alternatively, Tuxedo offers the InfinityBook Pro 14 Gen9, which are identically-build devices with Linux. The AMD model can be had from around US$1,345, whereas the Intel variant costs approx. US$1,470.

Case & connectivity
The same as with the larger XMG Evo 15, the manufacturer has chosen to use a sturdy aluminum case—except the Evo 14 is not black, but rather dark gray. It is therefore much less sensitive to collecting fingerprint marks. Its overall stability is very good and the hinges are also nice and tight, which is why there is only minimal rocking when adjusting the lid's angle. Its maximum opening angle is almost 180 degrees.
Compared to most other current 14-inch laptops, the Evo 14 features a large number of connections including Gigabit Ethernet and a full card reader. However, it is a mystery to us why one of the three regular USB-A ports only supports the old 2.0 standard. Its maintenance options are also great, as there are two slots for RAM (maximum 96 GB) and two slots for M.2 2280 SSDs. Nevertheless, the case remains quite compact overall and weighing in at 1.46 kg, it isn't too heavy either.
The WLAN module (Intel AX210) delivers very good and stable transfer rates, but it doesn't yet support Wi-Fi 7. The webcam—which supports Microsoft's Studio Effects—takes decent pictures and thanks to its IR sensor, facial recognition via Windows Hello is also on board. The fully-fledged card reader didn't seem to like our reference card (max. 90 MB/s) very much; it managed more than 250 MB/s using another card (ADATA V90). This means that you can expect quite significant differences depending on which card you use.
The black backlit keyboard provides a good contrast to the gray case and feels average to type on, but its larger keys give off a rather loud noise. The glass clickpad (12.3 x 7.7 cm) generally works fine, but we would recommend only tapping the pad for inputs. Mechanical clicks make a loud noise, which doesn't feel particularly high-quality.

Display - IPS with 400 nits & 100 % sRGB
The Evo 14's 14-inch IPS display depicts a very sharp image thanks to its 2,880 x 1,800 pixels in a 16:10 aspect ratio. Its matte surface helps to prevent reflections, but the picture thankfully doesn't look grainy. The colors are vivid, but not comparable to OLED panels. In turn, no PWM is used and its 120-Hz refresh rate ensures smooth movements. Its brightness is more than 400 cd/m² and, together with its decent black level, this results in a maximum contrast ratio of more than 1,300:1. However, neither the brightness nor the color temperature can be adjusted automatically.
A pre-calibrated profile can be downloaded from the Control Center, which made a very good impression during our test. In our analysis using the professional CalMAN software, its color and grayscale deviations were already below the important limit of 3. We could improve the display even further with our own calibration (available to download for free in the box on the right), but this isn't strictly necessary. Together with its complete sRGB coverage, the panel is suitable for editing images without any restrictions.

Performance - Ryzen 7 8845HS & up to 96 GB RAM
The XMG Evo 14 has three performance profiles to choose from (Balanced, Enthusiast, Overboost) and we have summarized the data in the following table. The default Enthusiast mode was used for our benchmarks and measurements.
| Energy profile | CPU TDP | CPU TDP battery | CB R23 Multi | Time Spy Graphics | max. fan noise emissions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Balanced | 25 watts | 25 watts | 12,318 points | 2,661 points | 29 dB(A) |
| Enthusiast | 45 watts | 35 watts | 15,494 points | 2,860 points | 37.6 dB(A) |
| Overboost | 60 watts | 50 watts | 16,315 points | 2,914 points | 44.6 dB(A) |
The XMG Evo 14 is a super fast laptop and the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS (Zen 4) delivered very good and stable performance overall, although it couldn't keep up with the new Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (Zen 5). Even so, the Zen 5 CPUs are currently only available with soldered-on RAM. During our test, the Evo 14 was always a responsive device and we noted no problems with system stability—plus, its latencies were also very low. Our test device uses the 1 TB version of the Samsung 990 Pro, which managed very high transfer rates. These also remained stable under prolonged load, which is not a matter of course.
The integrated Radeon 780M iGPU achieved decent performance values and proved to be particularly impressive when gaming, coming in just behind the Intel Arc Graphics with 8 Xe cores, which was still quite clearly in the lead during the synthetic tests. However, the new Radeon 890M was noticeably faster in our standard gaming benchmarks. Its graphics performance remained stable under prolonged load.

Emissions & power
The Evo 14 uses two fans and is a very quiet device during everyday use. Even when gaming or in the stress test, we measured a maximum of 37.6 dB(A) in Enthusiast mode. When using the Balanced mode, however, the device becomes even quieter (max. 29 dB(A)) if this is your priority. In Overboost mode, we noted a loud 44.6 dB(A), which is hardly worth it since you don't get much more power. There were no other electronic noises coming from our test device.
Its surface temperatures were completely harmless apart from a hotspot on the underside. The keyboard area in particular always remained at a pleasant temperature. Still, skin contact with the underside should be avoided during heavy use.
Despite its high-resolution 120 Hz panel, the laptop's idle consumption is very low and we noted no problems under load either. We measured a maximum of 83 watts, with the value quickly leveling off at ~76 watts during the stress test. The 100-watt power supply unit is perfectly adequate. The device's 80 Wh battery enables good battery runtimes, but these were even surpassed by some competitors. In the WLAN test, we measured just under 12 hours (150 cd/m²) and 9:40 hours (max. brightness). At 120 Hz it was around 60 minutes less in each case. In the video test, it lasted for a very good 15.5 hours.

Pros
Cons
Verdict - The XMG Evo 14 is a good total package without the usual compromises
Schenker's XMG Evo 14 proves that even modern laptops don't have to do without lots of connections and extensive maintenance options. Using both RAM slots, you can get up to 96 GB, its SSD capacity can be expanded super easily and there are a whole load of connections on board. Furthermore, the device can be configured extensively.
The AMD processor offers good and, above all, stable performance—the same can be said for the Radeon 780M. The device's IPS display boasts a high resolution, a refresh rate of 120 Hz as well as accurate colors, meaning you can effortlessly edit images within the sRGB color space.
The new Schenker XMG Evo 14 delivers a good total package including a metal case for an introductory price of just over US$1,000. Despite its relatively compact case, you don't need to do without solid performance values, numerous connections and good maintenance options.
Its runtimes are good overall, even if quite a few competitors offer even better stamina. You should take a look at the new XMG Evo 14 in particular because of its introductory price of approx. US$1,000. Although the Intel model features Thunderbolt 4 support, its limited performance increase isn't worth the surcharge in our eyes.
Price and availability
The XMG Evo 14 AMD isn't available in the United States, but it can be purchased from international stores such as bestware.com, with prices starting from around US$1,000.
