Verdict: A good everyday laptop with a below average screen
In the sea of 14-inch office-laptops, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G9 IPL offers mainly two things: A price many people can still pay, and an amount of memory that is increasingly rare these days - especially in the lower price bracket. In this price range, there certainly are some compromises necessary: The screen quality is below average, and the performance is just OK. It is perfectly fine for everyday use in an office context, but nothing special.
Other strengths of the Lenovo ThinkBook laptop are the good keyboard, great port selection and good repairability. The design may be a bit plain, but it is perfectly suitable for any modern office. Overall, this is a good everyday workhorse, if you are willing to compromise on the display quality.

Case, Connectivity and Input Devices: The silver ThinkBook
Design-wise, Lenovo does not change what works. The new Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G9 IPL uses the same exact design the older ThinkBook 14 G8 relied on, with an all-grey two-tone colorway. This is clearly a more budget-oriented laptop, as the base unit is made out of plastic, only the screen cover is aluminium. Build quality is still good though, as there is little bend of flex anywhere. One thing that could be better is the stability of the hinges, as the screen can wobble slightly. It does open to 180 degrees, but the screen cannot be opened with one hand.
The port selection remains mostly unchanged, though there are now two Thunderbolt 4 ports instead of only one. As with the predecessor, it is an excellent selection, even including more exotic choices such as an SD card reader and RJ45-Ethernet.
Lenovo keeps using the same input devices as on the previous model. This means you get a great keyboard, with a spacious layout that includes big arrow keys and grouped F keys, as well as rounded Chiclet keys with a good feedback, and a good mechanical touchpad. The touchpad is plastic, but it is smooth, and the mechanism does not wobble.

Display: Weak screen in an office laptop
Lenovo offers a total of three different 14-inch 16:10 screens for the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G9 IPL:
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, 60 Hz, matte
- WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200), IPS, 400 cd/m², 45 % NTSC, 60 Hz, matte, Touch
- 2.8K (2,880 x 1,800), IPS, 500 cd/m², 100 % sRGB, 120 Hz, matte
The basic screen our review device uses is certainly worthy of being called basic. While the brightness of 386 cd/m² is an improvement over the ThinkBook 14 G8, the color accuracy, color gamut coverage and overall vibrancy of the panel certainly leave a lot to be desired. At least there is no PWM, but for individual customers, seeking out the optional 2.8K screen is certainly worth it.

Performance: Panther Lake with good efficiency, but average performance
Testing Conditions
The Lenovo "Smart Power Pro" settings can be set via the Lenovo Vantage app or by pressing FN + Q - though the most powerful "Maximum performance" mode can only be selected in the Vantage app, and is not available in battery mode. The power profile are as follows:
- Battery saver mode: PL1 12 W / PL2 20 W
- Performance: PL1 30 W / PL2 40 W
- Maximum performance: PL1 32 W / PL2 40 W
Lenovo also offers an "auto" mode that is supposed to automatically switch the power settings, depending on the application running. "Maximum performance" was used for all benchmarks.
Processor Performance
The Intel Core Ultra 5 325 is an entry-level option of the Panther Lake lineup. It has the small CPU Tile setup, with four big P cores (up to 4.5 GHz) and four small LP-E cores (up to 3.4 GHz). Intel rates this processor for a typical power consumption of 25 W. For more detailed comparisons with other CPUs, use our processor comparison list.
With this CPU, the ThinkBook laptop is slower than its direct predecessor, which we tested with the Intel Core Ultra 7 255H. This newer model delivers a performance more in line with older Lunar Lake CPUs, certainly a good choice for everyday tasks, but not really meant for more advanced uses.
There is no throttling on battery mode.

Storage Devices
The SSD that Lenovo uses is made by Chinese YMTC. It is a 512 GB drive in the M.2 2242 size, connected via PCIe NVMe 4.0. Among the 14-inch office laptops in the comparison, it is one of the slower drives, and it also has some problems with throttling under load. In everyday use, it is still more than fast enough.

GPU performance
As usual for the smaller Panther Lake CPUs, the ThinkBook 14 G9 IPL delivers solid, but pretty unimpressive GPU benchmark numbers. The performance equals the basic Radeon iGPU of the AMD Ryzen 7 350, but lags behind the ARC iGPU of the preceding ThinkBook 14 G8 IAL.

System Noise
Among the 14-inch office laptops reviewed, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 G9 IPL is one of the louder systems. Luckily, in everyday use, it does stay very quiet, but if you do need the CPU performance, this laptop will reach up to 49.7 dB(a). For an office enviornment, this is a bit too loud for our taste.
We did not detect and coil whine.

Power Consumption and Battery Life
With the slight increase in battery capacity from 45 Wh to 48 Wh and a lower power consumption, battery life is improved by around 1.5 hrs compared to the older ThinkBook 14 G8 IAL in our Wi-Fi/websurfing test (150 cd/m² brightness). Still, just shy of 9 hrs is not a great result and merely passable these days.
