Verdict: Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 IAL is a good choice for students
If you do not have much money and just need a laptop to get things done, be it work in Microsoft Office or while studying, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 IAL is certainly well-suited for those tasks. It has good input devices and all the ports you would need in your daily work - with RJ45-Ethernet and a SD card reader, it even provides more flexibility than some more expensive devices. Additionally, the great upgradeability means this device can go the distance and with the powerful Arrow Lake H CPU, its performance is going to be good for many years, too.
Where the Lenovo ThinkBook laptop falters is with screen quality and details like the speakers lacking bass, but then again - this is not really a laptop meant for those multimedia tasks, and it this price points, some sacrifices have to be made. The biggest weakness of the model we tested was the below-average battery life, courtesy of the small 45 Wh battery. But that can be remedied by choosing a model with the optionally available bigger 60 Wh battery.

A good quality laptop for work at an affordable price-point - this is the promise of the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 8. A 14 inch laptop for small business customers, the latest generation of this compact Lenovo ThinkBook packs in many features and the newest Intel Arrow Lake H CPUs, competing for a much sought after slice of the market.
Specifications: Intel Arrow Lake H for the first time in a Lenovo ThinkBook
Case & Connectivity: Affordable Lenovo ThinkBook laptop offers great port variety
The basic design of the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 has not changed much in the last few years. It is a silver-gray chassis with an aluminum lid and a plastic base cover. Quality is certainly a concern at this price-point and the ThinkBook manages to be mostly solid. There is little give in the base and screen cover, but there is some wobble with the hinge. One-handed opening is not possible, but at least the screen opens to 180 degrees. When it comes to material quality, the ThinkBook clearly feels like a device of its price-range - at least the palmrest has a smooth paint, which feels slightly less cheap than the rough plastic of the bottom cover.
An advantage of this affordable Lenovo laptop: It offers the user a lot of flexibility. The ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 has a modern Thunderbolt 4 port, as well as nowadays rare options like a full-size SD card slot (with the cards sticking out) and RJ45 Ethernet. Additionally, the Lenovo ThinkBook laptop has two SO-DIMM slots for expandable memory, the M.2 2242 SSD is not soldered either - an M.2 2280 SSD would also fit, plus there is a second, free M.2 2280 slot. The Wi-Fi card is not soldered down, either, making the ThinkBook very repairable.

Input Devices: Good Lenovo laptop keyboard
Lenovo uses a 1.5mm travel keyboard with smile shaped keys and a two level LED backlight that also offers an auto-mode. The keyboard offers a good typing experience and great layout with well-sized arrow keys and grouped F keys. It is all-around a good keyboard.
The touchpad (12 x 7.5 cm) is a typical mechanical dive-board clickpad. It has a smooth plastic surface and it performs well in everyday use. Overall, the input devices of the Lenovo ThinkBook laptop are very usable.
Display: Cheap screen typical for affordable office laptops
The Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 is always equipped with a 14-inch 16:10 IPS LCD with a WUXGA resolution (1,920 x 1,200), which reaches a screen brightness of 300 cd/m² and covers 45 percent of the NTSC color gamut. The only option is between a touch or a non-touch solution; our review sample uses the non-touch display.
The screen brightness of sub-par, with a maximum of 276 cd/m². Overall, this is a cheap screen, usable in indoor-office settings, but also lacking in color-gamut coverage and thus not suitable for any photo-editing or color work. This is the typical screen of a budget office-laptop, and not even the matte display surface can really help it in outdoor settings, due to the weak screen backlight.

Performance: Intel Arrow Lake H delivers
Lenovo's ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 IAL is configurable with four different Arrow Lake CPUs - two of which are Arrow Lake U processors (Intel Core Ultra 5 225H, Core Ultra 5 225U, Core Ultra 5 235U, Core Ultra 7 255H). Depending on the processor chosen, there are three different Intel GPU options available (Intel Graphics, Intel ARC 130T, Intel ARC 140T).
The Lenovo laptop has two SO-DIMM and two M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0 slots. Up to 64 GB DDR5-5600 memory and 4 TB SSD storage are possible.
Testing Conditions
There are three different power modes influencing the power limits (PL1 = power consumption under sustained load, PL2 = maximum power consumption) that can be changed using the FN+Q key combination:
- Best battery life: PL1 11 W / PL2 20 W
- Balanced: PL1 30 W / PL2 45 W
- Best performance: 38 W / 50 W
All benchmarks were performed in "Best performance" mode.
Processor
The Intel Core Ultra 7 255H is part of the latest Intel CPU lineup called Arrow Lake. This processor has sixteen cores in total - six Lion Cove P cores (2 to 5.1 GHz), eight Skymont E cores (1.5 to 4.4 GHz) and two additional Skymont Low Power E cores (0.7 to 2.5 GHz). This CPU is rated for a typical TDP of 28 W, but the manufacturer can set it to up to 115 W. More comprehensive comparisons with other processors are possible with our comparison list.
In our CPU performance rating, the ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 takes the top spot among the reviewed 14-inch office laptops. The difference to a Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 6 with the AMD Ryzen 7735HS is pronounced, the Arrow Lake H CPU is overall 47 percent faster. Compared with the two devices equipped with the Core Ultra 7 155H, the newer processor is between 16 and 23 percent faster.
On battery power, the performance is reduced slightly, by around 10 percent.

Storage Devices
Lenovo uses a fast NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD made by Western Digitial. It is an M.2 2242 drive inside a M.2 2280 slot - there is a second M.2 2280 slot, so the ThinkBook is highly upgradeable. The factory SSD is also fast in our benchmarks, topping the benchmark comparison.

GPU Performance
The Intel ARC 140T is the standard GPU solution of the Arrow Lake H Ultra 7 CPUs. Technically, it is almost identical to the Intel ARC GPU of last year's Meteor Lake H CPUs, except for increased AI performance. Unsurprisingly, then, the ThinkBook achieves a similar performance when compared with the older Meteor Lake laptops. This means the ThinkBook is certainly usable for some graphically demanding tasks, like light gaming, though newer games can only be played in drastically reduced graphical fidelity.

Power Consumption
The ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 IAL achieves a good power efficiency when idling. Overall, it is more power efficient than the other devices in our comparison, especially under load when put up against the Meteor Lake H models.
For the maximum consumption of 66.7 W, the 65 W USB-C charger seems insufficient, but since the power consumption quickly drops, users need not be worried about the battery discharging during use.

Battery Life
The Lenovo ThinkBook laptop has two battery options, 45 Wh and 60 Wh. Our model has the small battery, and battery life is below average as a result: A little over 7 hours in our web-browsing test (150 cd/m² brightness) is a weak result. The good news is, the bigger battery. If you are interested in the ThinkBook and want to use it on the go, definitely look for a variant with the big battery.

Notebookcheck Rating
Lenovo's ThinkBook 14 Gen 8 IAL delivers good performance, upgradeability and a great port selection, but the display is cheap, and the speakers are lacking, typical problems for an affordable office laptop. Plus, the battery life is limited, but can be improved by choosing a configuration with a bigger battery.
