When it comes to consumer laptops, it’s more or less standard practice that maintenance options are limited to the SSD, as the memory is often soldered onto the motherboard or even part of the processor, which is the case with Intel’s latest Lunar Lake processors. This trend also affected the business laptop segment in recent years, as it does offer certain advantages since SO-DIMM modules take up less space on the motherboard. In Lenovo’s ThinkPad series, there have been notebooks with 8 or 16GB of soldered RAM and an additional SO-DIMM slot for memory upgrades.
With the new ThinkPad E14 G7, one of Lenovo's more affordable office laptops, this trend has now reversed. Specifically, the Intel configuration with current Arrow Lake processors offers SO-DIMM slots. This means that the RAM can be expanded up to 128GB in some cases. The E14 G7 is also well-equipped in terms of SSD storage. In addition to the shorter M.2 2242 slot, which is occupied by the stock SSD, there is another full-fledged M.2 2280 slot, which can accommodate a secondary solid-state drive.
However, this doesn't apply to all model variants of the ThinkPad E14 G7. In a few weeks, another Lunar Lake-based version will launch alongside the Arrow Lake SKU that we reviewed. Since the memory is part of the processor, this upgrade option is no longer available. Furthermore, that model won’t have an additional SSD slot as it only features a singular M.2 2280 slot. The battery is not larger either, and we don't expect any significant cooling improvements due to the lower power limits of Lunar Lake CPUs, which means there will likely be a lot of unused space. We should get a chance to test that variant in a few weeks.
Until then, check out our comprehensive review of the new ThinkPad E14 G7 for more details, benchmarks and impressions.
