Verdict - The ThinkPad E14 G7 is a good compact office laptop
As with its larger counterpart, our test verdict of the new Lenovo ThinkPad E14 G7 is mostly positive. Buyers get a compact office laptop with the latest components and connections. While its performance doesn't break any records, it's perfectly adequate for everyday office use and, if desired, the laptop can stay super quiet. Its input devices are comfortable, its maintenance options are excellent, and the device's battery life has been noticeably improved.
The laptop's new display is additionally a significant improvement over the old model, but it isn't without its own weak points. First of all, the 120 Hz 2.8K panel requires quite a lot of power—and the image appears somewhat grainy when depicting bright surfaces. Plus, its brightness specification of 400 cd/m² wasn't met during our test. Even so, the panel is still very well suited for office work, and you can even edit images without any problems. Overall, the new screen in the larger ThinkPad E16 made a better impression on us (despite its slightly lower resolution).
All in all, this is a good and affordable office laptop that performs better in total than the Asus ExpertBook B5, for example. We will be testing the AMD version shortly, and a Lunar Lake variant is additionally set to be launched in a few weeks.
Pros
Cons
Price and availability
You can order the new ThinkPad E14 G7 directly from Lenovo, with prices starting at $782.32.
After reviewing the new 16-inch ThinkPad E16 G3 model, it's now time to take a look at the more compact 14-inch ThinkPad E14 G7 version. Today, we are testing the Intel version with the Core Ultra 7 255H, 16 GB RAM, a 1 TB SSD, and a new 120 Hz, 2.8K display. However, our campus version costing around $1,000 doesn't come with an operating system installed. A comparable configuration from Lenovo costs around $1,200.
Specifications
Case & connectivity
The ThinkPad E14 G7 is a compact office laptop following the current ThinkPad design, which includes the familiar camera bump. The lid and underside are made of aluminum, but the top of the base unit is made of either plastic or aluminum. Our model features plastic, which, from a quality standpoint, isn't quite as nice. We also noted some slight creaking noises. In Lenovo's online store, you can select the aluminum version at no extra charge, which we would highly recommend. On the inside, you'll notice many similarities compared to its big brother, as the same motherboard is used in this model. This means that it comes with similarly impressive maintenance options (2x SSD, 2x RAM).
In terms of its connectivity, the affordable E14 actually offers everything you need for everyday use. In addition to enough USB ports (including Thunderbolt 4), users get a 1080p webcam with a mechanical cover and an IR sensor for facial recognition. Studio effects are supported, but the image quality isn't particularly good. A Wi-Fi 7 module is not on board, but Intel's AX211 module delivers reasonable transfer rates.

Sustainability
The ThinkPad E14 G7 has several environmental certifications (e.g., Energy Star 9.0, EPEAT Gold), and Lenovo claims that the device has a carbon footprint of 0.5 tons. However, the manufacturer hasn't actually provided any information on its carbon footprint or its use of recycled materials in practice. A maintenance manual is available, and the laptop's packaging can be completely recycled.
Input devices - Decent ThinkPad keyboard
The device's backlit keyboard feels comfortable to type on and you can even compose longer texts without any issues. The two-stage white keyboard backlighting cannot be activated via a sensor. A fingerprint scanner is located inside the power button, which is housed to the right of the keyboard. The trackpoint works flawlessly and the corresponding buttons offer a smooth and quiet pressure point. Due to the trackpoint buttons, the height of the clickpad is limited (11.5 x 6 centimeters), but it still feels nice and smooth. In turn, the mechanical clicks in the lower area sound a little loud.
Display - 120 Hz IPS with VRR
In addition to the standard Full HD IPS panel at 60 Hz and with a brightness of 300 cd/m², Lenovo now also offers a high-resolution IPS panel (2,880 x 1,800 pixels, 16:10) with a frequency of 120 Hz and a brightness of up to 400 cd/m² for an additional $50. Subjectively, its picture quality is good, and colors look vivid thanks to its full sRGB coverage. However, bright areas appear slightly grainy; in this respect, the ThinkPad E16's WQHD screen was better. We noted no PWM flickering and its response times were unremarkable during our test. You can see some slight backlight bleeding on dark backgrounds, but this shouldn't be too distracting during everyday use.
During our analysis using the professional CalMAN software, its brightness remained slightly below the manufacturer's specification, reaching a maximum of 389 cd/m² (average 362 cd/m²)—but thanks to its low black value, its contrast ratio is very good. The factory profile is already well set up, but using our own calibration (profile available to download for free in the box on the right), we managed to improve the display even further. Overall, the panel is suitable for image editing.

System performance
The ThinkPad is a fast everyday companion, which is of course mainly thanks to its installed SSD. Its system benchmark results are good and there were no stability issues during our test.

Storage device
The ThinkPad E14 comes with an M.2-2242 SSD (PCIe 4.0) as standard and, in the case of our test device, with a 1 TB version of the SK hynix PVC10. The SSD's performance was very good during our test and remained stable even under prolonged load. Thanks to an additional M.2-2280 slot (also connected via PCIe 4.0), you can easily and affordably expand its storage capacity as needed.

GPU performance
Graphics calculations are taken care of by the Intel Arc Graphics 140T, but our test device can't seem to exploit the full potential of the iGPU due to its single-channel RAM configuration. Naturally, this affected its benchmark results. Of course, this is still perfectly adequate for everyday office use, but those who like to play games should really install an additional RAM module. The laptop's GPU performance remained stable in battery mode and under continuous load.

Emissions & energy
Noise emissions
The ThinkPad E14's cooling unit is identical to that of the larger ThinkPad E16 and, in general, is a very quiet device. When the laptop is placed under heavy load, you can expect between 36-40 dB(A), although it only reached the maximum value for a short time during our test. Under continuous load, the fan noise quickly settled at 36 dB(A). Using the other two performance modes, the device stayed a lot quieter (Auto: 33.7 dB(A), Battery Saver mode: 25.8 dB(A)). We noted no other electronic noises coming from our test device.

Temperature
The laptop's surface temperatures are unproblematic overall. During the stress test, we measured a hotspot in the middle of the underside, but there shouldn't normally be any direct skin contact with this area. The keyboard also tends to get noticeably warm in the middle, but this won't cause any restrictions when typing. During the stress test, the processor briefly ran at 45 watts and then settled at 28 watts (75 °C).
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 42.2 °C / 108 F, compared to the average of 34.3 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 50.3 °C / 123 F, compared to the average of 36.8 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 27.6 °C / 82 F, compared to the device average of 29.5 °C / 85 F.
(±) 3: The average temperature for the upper side is 35.3 °C / 96 F, compared to the average of 29.5 °C / 85 F for the class Office.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 29.6 °C / 85.3 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 27.6 °C / 81.7 F (-2 °C / -3.6 F).

Power consumption
The laptop's new display has a noticeable effect on its power consumption, as the ThinkPad turned out to be one of the worst performers in our comparison group, reaching a maximum idle value of 11 watts. Under maximum load, it briefly reached just under 66 watts, but then quickly settled at around 50 watts. The included 65-watt power adapter is therefore sufficient in size.
